Early on I submitted to two CONTESTS and felt shitty about it afterward, like I had been scammed. People justify the system but I agree with you. If you’re taking it on, even if you get a million slushy submissions, that’s your _job_ or else don’t do it. It creates a tiered system geared to the affluent and the connected - like everything else really 😂 but it feels like really predatory behavior. I never had the money to throw that way, and did go the self-pub route before POD was a thing. Yeah, what poets haven’t self published?
I still submit but if you ever see the readership you may be shocked - one of the magazines I got into said he only has roughly 200 people read each article despite thousands of followers on twitter. I think I submit for internal and external validation - so I can share work and say, 'look where I got published.' And then on releasing a book (which I hope to do next year) I can at least say, that half of them are printed here and here - alongside 15 original pieces. I think if I was more established, I wouldnt even bother doing it but because I'm a new poet, I believe it helps with credibility.
