Learn the difference between the WHO VS WHOM pronouns in this English grammar lesson. I will teach you a trick so you know when to use who and when to use whom. "Whom" and "who" are pronouns that refer to people. They are used to ask questions or provide information about the subject or object of a sentence.
Who is used as the subject of a sentence.
Examples:
• Who is going to Mark's wedding?
• Who wants ice cream after dinner?
It refers to the person performing the action or being discussed.
Whom is used as the object of a verb or preposition.
Examples:
• To whom did you lend your book?
• Whom did you ask for advice about this?
It refers to the person receiving the action or being affected.
Take my who VS whom quiz and see how many you can get correct out of six!

Many people understand the question forms, it would be very helpful to show how to use them in statements... e.g. These are my six friends, most of whom live in the city.

Mathematically speaking...whom minus who, the difference is m.

I tend to get confused when it's a declarative sentence. Ex: "I met a strange man ____ I suspect to be an undercover agent." It's "whom", right? Because "man" is the receiver of the verb "suspect"?
@SparkleEnglish
@SparkleEnglish Год назад
Yes! That is correct. In that sentence, "whom" is used as the object of the verb "suspect". Since the strange man is the one being suspected, he is the object of the suspicion.

All formally correct, but the word "whom" is clearly falling out of use as the English language continues to change and evolve.

That's tricky. It's either a very good point or cheating!
@SparkleEnglish

This is true. I never use "whom" in conversation with my friends. They would probably laugh if I did!
