According to the official version, the Great Commander died from a common cold before he started the great campaign. Was it due to the vicissitudes of fate? Has somebody planned it? Who was buried in the tomb of Tamerlane? Strangeness and contradictions, mysticism and coincidences followed him during his whole life and did not leave him even after death.

According to some, the Soviets were not the first to fall victim to the curse of Tamerlane. Nadir Shah, the Afsharid conqueror from Persia, was the first victim of the curse. Nadir Shah Here is the story of how the curse affected Nadir Shah. Around 1740, Nadir Shah led a campaign in Central Asia. The Khanate of Bukhara was soon defeated and Samarkand was now under his control. Tamerlane had always been a hero for Nadir Shah. Now he finally had an opportunity to visit the tomb of the great conqueror, the Gur-i-Amir. On his way back to Iran, Nadir Shah had took a piece of the tombstone from Timur’s tomb. This was taken as a souvenir to the Afsharid capital. Soon after, things started to go bad for Nadir Shah and his empire. Even his son became ill and would not improve. His advisers pleaded to have the tombstone sent back and eventually he agreed. Soon after it was sent back to Samarkand, Nadir’s son recovered. Unfortunately for him, Timur does not forgive. A few years later, Nadir Shah was assassinated by some of the people closest to him. Now this is just a story. Even its authenticity is doubtful. We know for a fact that Nadir Shah had a tombstone from the Gur-i-Amir transported back to his capital. It is more likely that he was put eventually put off by the idea of stealing from Timur’s tomb. Or the fact that the tombstone broke into two during transport. I have found no exact evidence of things starting to go bad within the Afsharid Empire. It is far more likely that the tombstone was returned to the Gur-i-Amir for other reasons. Not out of superstition. Soviets In June 1941, the Soviets decided to start an expedition to excavate the bodies within the Gur-i-Amir for study. This was led by Tashmuhammed Kari-Niyazov and Mikhail Gerasimov. As the story goes, the locals and religious clerics were not pleased with this at all. They were fearful and warned the Soviets that their actions would bring calamity upon them all. The expedition continued its work and ignored the warnings of the locals. On 19th June, the tombstone was taken from Timur’s tomb. Upon the tomb, an inscription was noted. “When I rise from the dead, the world shall tremble." The expedition team thought nothing of this. Such things were normal. On 20th June, Timur’s tomb was opened. A strong choking odor suddenly filled the mausoleum. The smell was a mixture of resins, camphor, rose and frankincense. It was from the embalming oils. Ignoring all warnings, the expedition continued its work. Timur’s body was exhumed from his tomb. Upon his casket was an inscription. Another warning to any who might disturb him. "Whoever opens my tomb, shall unleash an invader more terrible than I”. The Soviet expedition took the remains to begin their work and research. The were warned by the local elders, that Timur’s curse would strike them within three days. Once again, they ignored all of the warnings. Scientists did not believe in superstitious nonsense. Two days later, on the night of 22 June 1941, Nazi Germany suddenly invaded the Soviet Union as a part of Operation Barbarossa. Around 4.5 million German troops crossed into the Soviet territory as a part of this invasion. This resulted in one of the most bloody conflicts in the history of warfare. Millions of Soviet citizens died and many more suffered. It is believed that over 20 million Soviet citizens may have died overall in the duration of the conflict. In November 1942, the Soviets reburied the remains of Tamerlane and his family. The reburial was carried out with all of the proper Islamic traditions. Soon after, the Soviets launched their counter-attack against the Germans. This was the Operation Uranus which resulted in perhaps the first major victory for the Soviets. Soon the tables would turn and the Soviets would gain the upper hand. Eventually, the Germans were pushed back and defeated. Conclusion Let’s start with the fact that Russia did not start losing the war against Nazi Germany after the desecration of Timur’s tomb. The war started two days after the exhumation of his body. The war did not go well for the Soviets at all, in the early stages. So how true is the curse of Tamerlane? The story with Nadir Shah does not seem to have any evidence behind it. Yes, he took the tombstone and returned it. But I have not found any specifics about what went wrong within the Afsharid Empire after the tombstone arrived in the capital. Even his death occurred years after this incident. As for the Soviets. I must admit, it is quite an unlikely coincidence. The fact that the war started two days after the desecration and turned on its head a few days after the reburial of his remains. But that is all this is. An unhappy coincidence. Nothing else. I do not really believe in curses. To me, it is just superstitious nonsense. But it does make for a very interesting story. So no, in my opinion the curse is not true. What happened was just a coincidence. However, if someone does want to prove me wrong. I suppose they could try to exhume Timur’s body once more. If World War III breaks out within three days, I am more than happy to change my mind.

yoda The Timurid dynasty was founded in 1370 by the Turkic warlord Temür, usually known in the west as Tamerlane (Temür the lame). Rising to power within the realm of Chinggis Khan’s second son Chaghadai, Temür established his capital at Samarqand and embarked on a career of conquest throughout the former Mongolian Empire and the Central Islamic lands. While his campaigns ranged from Delhi almost to Moscow and from the eastern Turkestan to western Anatolia, Temür established an administration only over the central regions, including Iran and Transoxiana; these were largely settled and Persian-speaking territories. Temür and his followers were Turks loyal to the Mongol tradition, but they were also Muslim and well acquainted with Perso-Islamic culture. The dynasty lasted three more generations-those of Shāhrukh (1409-1447); Abu Sa`īd (1451-1469); and Sulṭān Ḥusayn Bayqara (1469-1506). During this time, the Timurid state shrank in size but gained fame for its wide-ranging cultural patronage and sophisticated styles in architecture, literature, and the arts of the book. In 1507, the Uzbek Shibani Khan overthrew the Timurid dynasty and took over its eastern territories. The Timurid prince Babur Mirza retreated from his region of Ferghana to Kabul and then in 1526 conquered Delhi and founded the Mughal or Later Timurid dynasty. oxfordre.com/asianhistory/view/10.1093/acrefore/9780190277727.001.0001/acrefore-9780190277727-e-10 Timur TURKIC CONQUEROR WRITTEN BY: The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica See Article History Alternative Titles: Tamburlaine, Tamerlane, Timour, Timur Lenk, Timurlenk ARTICLE CONTENTS Timur, also spelled Timour, byname Timur Lenk or Timurlenk (Turkish: “Timur the Lame”), English Tamerlane or Tamburlaine, (born 1336, Kesh, near Samarkand, Transoxania [now in Uzbekistan]-died February 19, 1405, Otrar, near Chimkent [now Shymkent, Kazakhstan]), Turkic conqueror, chiefly remembered for the barbarity of his conquests from India and Russia to the Mediterranean Sea and for the cultural achievements of his dynasty. www.britannica.com/biography/Timur Tartar name of Tamerlane. Ousted from his ancestral domain in Central Asia, Bābur turned to India to satisfy his appetite for conquest. www.britannica.com/topic/Mughal-dynasty . Though not a Borjigid or a descendant of Genghis Khan,[15] he clearly sought to invoke the legacy of the latter's conquests during his lifetime.[16] According to Beatrice Forbes Manz, "in his formal correspondence Temur continued throughout his life to portray himself as the restorer of Chinggisid rights. books.google.com.tr/books?id=1Nzh_9DZ5DYC&pg=PA28&lpg=PA28&dq=turco+mongol+barlas&source=bl&ots=Mvbe3Ot2GO&sig=ACfU3U0YwwXHTh1Fg4oNPamRH3XsS53v_g&hl=tr&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiHqZv83pHmAhVQRhUIHcexALoQ6AEwFnoECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=turco%20mongol%20barlas&f=false Cambridge book saying Turco-Mongolian tribe Barlas,Barlas is Turco-Mongol tribe, not only mongol en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barlas_(given_name) Barlas is a common masculine Turkish given name.
