Who was Caravaggio and why is he such a great painter?

He was born in 1571 and died in 1610, so he would have been 39 in 1610. Just saw Derek Jarman's Caravaggio with the late great Nigel Terry and it was a great movie.

The narrator makes me very nervous.

This video is not appropriate for Kindergarten age children. I had a couple of students that had nightmares after seeing some of the paintings that were selected. I even had a student ask me to never show it again because it bothered him so much. I have used others from this site and they have been good and appropriate.

Caravaggio was Spanish by nationality. Born in Milan, Duchy of Milan, Spanish Empire and died Porto Ercole, State of the Presidi, Spanish Empire. So, gonna go with he was Spanish . He also only spoke Spanish and Latin considering that was the de facto language, and Latin the formal. He might have had a Italian background in his family, and even Milan had an Italian history. But at his time Milan as well as Caravaggio was very much Spanish.
