Who Was Melchizedek & Why is He Important to Us? 

My grandfather, who lived from 1906 till 1997, was a Southern Baptist Deacon. He read the Bible an estimated 20 times cover to cover. His favorite question to test anyone who claimed to be a "man of God" was, "Who is the only man in the Bible that the texts do not account for his birth, nor his death?" Of course that is Melchizedek..... You would be surprised how many couldn't answer, Pastors included. I miss my grandfather more than anyone ever. I was 21 when he went home, and next month I turn 48, and it's still very painful for me, but I know it is not painful for him. My parents did very little of my raising, that was left to my grandparents. Can't wait to see him again and thank him for showing me the way to Yeshua. Otherwise, I was doomed.

There are various god's mentioned in Genesis, El-Elyon (God, the highest God) is one of them. Others are El-Olam (God of time), El-Roi (God that sees), and El-Shaddai (God of the mountain) are also mentioned. Melchizedek is not a name but rather the title of the Priest-King of the ancient town of Salem (from shalom-peace), which was renamed Jerusalem. The Hebrew melech means king, and tzedek means righteousness, which gives us king of righteousness. The god worshipped in Salem was El-Elyon. The story we have of David taking the city of Salem/Jerusalem, means he took the title as well, Melchizedek. This story can be interpreted as David honoring the patriarch Abraham.

I believe Melchizedek was an Old Testament manifestation of Jesus. He was both High Priest and King of Salem (Jerusalem) - no one but Jesus can hold both titles. He was given 1/10 by Abraham before the Tabernacle, Temple, and Mosaic law existed. Although not identified as such in the story of the 3 visitors who came to see Abraham before Sodom was destroyed, it is very plain that Abraham recognized the visitor, who he talked to like God, just 4 chapters after virtually worshiping Melchizedek.

Bread and wine were introduced during the passover and every Shabbat. Hebrews had been blessing God for bread and wine since the time of Moses. Shem, Noah's son was 98 at the time of the great flood and lived 600 years total...Abraham showed up 400ish years after the great flood...in the book of Jasher, Melchizedek is recorder as "Adonizedek king of Jerusalem", and follows immediately with "the same was Shem"...Biblically speaking the timing for Melchizedek being Shem, Noah's son is perfect...plus having the proximity to God that Shem would've had having come through the great flood would've placed Shem in a special position of priesthood with God...

You didn't mention the 650 years that was deleted from Genesis 11 in the Hebrew text so the Pharisees could defame the Lord's priesthood by fraudulently claiming Melchizedek was Shem. The Greek Septuagint and Samaritan Pentateuch have preserved the original timeline.

The other possibility for the identity of Melchizedek that I have heard is Shem, Noah's son. He was Abraham's ancestor, and therefore part of the line of Christ. And if you do the math, using the geneologies he was still alive at the time.

He's also in psalms 110 verse 4

We know nothing of Melchizedek’s priesthood, there is only one mention of him in Genesis, all other mentions are precepts to that verse…giving us understanding of his role to The Most High and letting us know he was taught as Abram was by tha only one God was dealing with before Abram, and that would be Noah…and he had three sons…Ham, Shem and Japheth. Who, out of these sons do you think was taught by Noah??
