Say Scottish history and you think of clans and warriors, but who was the Father of Clans? Scottish history tours guide Bruce Fummey takes you to Finlaggan to tell how Somerled and his sons created so many of the names you'll associate with Highland Scotland

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

I’m a MacDougall from Cape Breton and have to say I think the main use for clan identity here is to 1. Have something to represent your family, as family ties are important here, and 2. Have something to maintain our connection to Scotland, which the people here have never really forgotten
@noahjohnson935
@noahjohnson935 Год назад
living in Appalachia where lots of Scottish families settled, I can back this up. We aren't Scottish ourselves, not for many generations now, but it's important to remember our roots and our connection to Scotland and recognizing one's clan helps with that.

I've seen an Italian Rossi saying the Earls of Ross were his ancestor, so it can get dicey over here with the name changes on entry (many Rossi's changing their names to Ross) or Andersens changing over to Andersons, all the way to German Name Adoptions in Germany predating the US even. However given there was 2 Highland Clearances, allot of People in the US are Descendants of the Clans. Take Washington and those times, 12 out of 13 Governors who all rebelled were of Scottish Descent, and Washington was Surrounded by Clan Ross, wheather his Personal Land Lawyer Senator James Ross, or Continental Col. George Ross last to sign the Declaration of Independence by Date, or his Nephew with his many surviving letters back and forth to the founding fathers, or his Wife Betsy Ross 1st to make the US's Official Flag, or a John Ross who gave up his personal Treasury as Down Deposit to our Cousins the French Crown (they had a Queen Ross, as with the 1st Stuart King) and started the US 1st International Relationship, as with many other Ross' in the War Effort, some even in the British Isles! And I'll tell you one thing, it wasn't a bunch of English Mon Fighting the English Crown to Form the United State of America, it was all the People the English and the Turncoat Low Landers Ran Out! As stated to Conquer the Highlands, and send a Savage People to Conquer the Savage Americas! Accept we Conquered it for Ourselves! So by Your "Conquering of the Highlands" and the Highland People, was it worth Losing your Empire over? And being Replaced by US? Was it worth it? What you thought Ross was going to stand for that, and just take it lying down? Ha! How did that Work Out? Ya Low Landers!

Schools and colleges only focus on the basics. Even the advanced stuff is still basic. It's just to give you a general idea about a subject. However, I have found that history buffs are indispensable. They are often so willing to dig so far into a subject that when they're serious and not a bladder full of hot air know it all, they have learned way more about the subject and it seems like they're always digging to find more and learn more. I took world history in school, aced it. It was basic. They touched on British history but as you can imagine it was only centralized on English history as the chief focal point. A lot of Egypt and Rome and Greece but that was about it. He's from Scotland so he has a chance to find out from people the pieces of history that were not always passed down to us here in America. For us here, it's not to feel like a separate entity. Just like he said he felt something special about the place he was in, we feel that when we go to the highland games ans such. It's the connection. It's that I'm with like minded people interested in these parts of Scotland and I'm proud of this connection and I'm proud of them no matter their clan of interest and together we are interested in beautiful Scotland. Kind of like the United States it's self. Many states, all of us American brothers and sisters (Even if we drag each other through the mud politically, they are still my fellow Americans.).

I’m an American, so please don’t hold that against me. My paternal grandmother was a MacDonald from Cape Breton and we were always told that we were a part of Clanranald. Through my paternal grandfather, I can trace my American roots back to the Mayflower and onto the border of Wales and England. My maternal grandparents arrived here fairly late from England and were of German ancestry. I’m extremely proud of my Scottish ancestry and had the EXTREME pleasure of being able to visit Scotland. As far as celebrating our clans, i think our country is so new compared to most others, our ancestry gives us a sense of belonging in a world of change. Thanks for all you do to contribute to that feeling!

well as far as i know walter fitzalan was the first steward of scotland , he came up from england with william wallaces g/grandfather (de walis , they were both norman) after being given the title job and land by david 1 for helping his sister matilda in the barons war , she married knig henry 1 and was queen of england , walter married into what must have been a prominent family and thats where the stewart supposedly eventually came from , from steward to stewart , but therewas a robert stewart and walter took over from him so not sure about that , stuart maybe came from france to stewart , walters future son times 6 married marjory bruce supposedly giving us the clan stewart , walter lived at blackhall castle and founded paisley abbey , he gave land to monks in renfrewshire and ive just read this was in the area of castle semple who had links to knights templars and walters brother (i thnk) william had links to the templars , walter fought at the battle of inchinnan iwith malcolm and inchinnan is where there is an old church with links to the templars , walters children became fitzwalters and one married a william de brus (bruce), it can get confusing with names and if anyone can add or correct it would be most welcome , they are still looking for descendants of marjorie bruce to offer dna ,

Thanks for this video. As a descendant of Maccus of Well as well as several Stuarts and the Bruces, this gives me a perspective on the genealogy of my family. With hundreds of years of Maxwells in the mix, along with Stuarts and Bruces, this provides a perspective to me that we are descended from Scots, and delving deeper is like tracing the lineage from muons or bosons or possibly even quarks. American here. I'm partially a McDonald/McDonnell via my mom's side. We go back and forth on whether they were Irish or Scottish. It can be both, but ultimately originated in what is now Scotland. Whether your from Ireland or Scotland, Catholic or Protestant, and carry the name McDonald/McDonnell/MacDonald/MacDonnell/Donaldson/O'Donnell/Donald it goes back to the same origin from Somerled in Scotland and has Hiberno-Norse/Norse-Gael origins in Dal Riada. McDonald means World Mighty. Mac Domhnaill in Gaelic. They all are from the same source, and so are these septs (McAllister's, etc.) in the Western Coast of Scotland, originally. The McDonald/McDonnell name was brought to Ireland by the Gallowglass, hired Scottish Mercenaries, and many of them worked for Irish Clans like the Burke Clan, whom themeselves were actually of Anglo-Norman and Hiberno-Norman ancestry, in County Mayo, County Cork, and throughout Ireland, many staying and becoming Irish over time. The Gallowglass often later recruited local Irish into their groups as well. The heavy unit Scottish Gallowglass were often accompanied by younger local Irish warriors called Kerns. And later other Scottish Clans got in on the action came Later and became known as Redshanks. Hence why you find Irish Catholics named McDonald, an originally Scottish surname, and Scottish in Scotland with the same last name. Spelling may differ but the roots of the name despite the spelling or country are the same. Keep in mind the concept of unified nations were very loose during these times, and the Irish Gaels and Scottish Gaels of the Coast (Scots) kept contacts via family relations and sharing related languages, customs, religion Catholicism (Protestant Reformation didn't exist for multiple centuries), and such. Not to mention today the infighting is a bit dumb because everyone in the Isles has a bit of Celtic (Gaelic and/or Brythonic), Viking (Norwegian & Danish), Norman, and Angle/Saxon/Jute in them no matter what country you're from or religion you follow. If you spend centuries living in an area you get the genes of those around you in due time, just how it goes.

Just having the name Mac Domhnaill is no indication of a Scottish origin as there are Mac Domhnaill's of purely Irish origin, as well as other Mac Domhnaill's who came from Scotland as Gall Óglaigh.

Yet another excellent video, Bruce! It reminds me of a lovely article the journalist Hugh MacDonald wrote after his Dad’s death. His old boy had always told him that he was a son of Somerled. He decided to take a DNA ancestry test……100% Gael. My surname is Arthur, so I wear the MacArthur kilt at “do’s”, but I’ve often wondered if my ancestors “dropped the Mac for bread”, or if it’s all just stories. Then, like you, I just think: “Tha mi a Alba!” and suddenly I’m happy again ♥️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

My great grandmother’s maiden name was Anderson. Now I know I’m not a true member of the Anderson clan or anything, hell I’m not even close to being Scottish, but I did use my connection to this clan to buy a nice warm Anderson tartan patterned scarf I wear every winter. I could have picked any pattern, but I like that my family has some connection to it, even if it’s only a small connection on my mother’s side.

Here via Max over on @Tasting History. :) I know on my granpa's side we were Nairns, but that's all I have to go on. Still, being possibly related to a great chef instead of a chieftain isn't bad! :)

My family is from Ayrshire. Although I've lived in America all of my adult life, I was raised in and around Prestwick. I used to ask about clan affiliations that our family might have had but nobody seemed to know. My father used to tell me, "We're all Jock Tamsen's bairn". It's enough for me to be Scottish and to be able to show my children from whence they came.

I mentioned that a DNA test linked me back to Somerled. I looked at you store and saw the Inventor’s hoodie about “phone a Scot.” My father, George Sweigert, invented and has the patent on the Cordless telephone. I walked around Euclid, Ohio as a teen saying Hello Test 123 into his Extensaphone, in 1967. , Ohio
