Beorn is a skin-changer we meet in The Hobbit, and his descendants, The Beornings, followed on after him. But who are these large men that could potentially transform into great bears?
Hopefully you enjoy finding out what we know in this video! :)
And do not forget, can we get this video to surpass 7500 likes?? (As well as leaving the comment of "Great Chief" too!)

"Great Chief". We don't really have any evidence that any of the Beornings were members of Beorn's original folk. It is possible that at least some of them were, but my assumption is that the vast majority of the Beornings were Woodmen who came to follow Beorn after the Battle of the Five Armies. We never learn if any daughters of Beorn (or other female descendants) inherited his skin-changing ability or how it might have manifested. Perhaps they could turn into swans and were the source for legends of swan-maidens.

Perhaps they could even turn into foxs, accounting for other legends. I used to know a family of white foxes when I was a kid. Dior had two sons and a daughter... the sons were never found, though I suspect they were the fathers of the Beornings, perhaps raised by bears and married to women of the Haldor? @minnumseerrund
@minnumseerrund 3 года назад
I would say no. While the sources are shaky and we dont really have much evidence that they were an actual thing, the /concept/ of the berserkers of Norse tradition are tied to the practice of shamanistic trance and the cult of Odin. In this way, they are more like a Norse parallel to mythic knightly orders like The Knights of the Round Table, ie a sort of spiritual warrior-society. See also the Jomsvikings and the Úlfhéðnar. Furthermore, the defining trait of berserkers is (obviously) the act of going berserk (bersærkergang), ie going into a primal frenzy during battle. While berserkers are often depicted as donning wolves' or bear pelts (sometimes even eschewing all other clothes and armour in battle), this doesnt necessarily allude to shapeshifting as much as to channeling the nature of the beast, in a shamanistic sense - or maybe just 'hey, bears are cool, look I made a hat out of its head. I'm like a bear now lol.' There is, however, a sort of overlap between the portrayal of individual mythical berserkers (such as Stærkodder/Starkad) and the Norse rendition of skinchangers (primarily werewolves and werebears) as tragic heroes/villians roaming the land or living on the edge of society. Several sagas and historical accounts also claim that the berserkers are immune to both iron and fire, a trait shared by skinchangers in some renditions.

There are several mythical tales surrounding humans who change into animals and specifically bears (voluntarily or otherwise). The Saga of Hrólfr Kraki is one such tale, and it is known that Tolkien studied it and wrote about it, so chances are that was a stronger inspiration. There's also the fact that one of Tolkiens favourite works of literature was "Beowulf", a work which most definetly inspired other parts of "The Hobbit" in major ways. And the name "Beowulf" likely translates to "Bear".

Tolkien liked to toss random interesting characters and never really explain them, just so we fly off with our imagination about the details... Like Tom Bombadil. And about the question: Of course a Dragon, who would not like to turn intu a massive flying beast of fiery death?! Now a conjecture regarding Beorn's origin: he was not imortal, but we also know not if he aged at all, for we do not know how he died, but as it was not told he was elven at any moment we could guess he was mortal like man, but again Tom Bombadil seemed immortal. Now he was a shapeshifter, so that is not a very common power in middle earth, comparing to others Sauron had such ability as he turned intu a bat and a wolf, also intu a beautiful image to seduce people as Annatar, now Sauron was a Maiar, and Maiar were capable of a variety of magical feats such as the Istari and the Balrogs. So we could conclude that Beorn could be a decendant of a Maiar as they were known to marry people of Middle Earth, as we got Melian as an exemple, a Maiar with a connection to animals or shapeshifting powers could marry a Man, and the line of Beorn could have risen. And his powers were kept in his blood but after some generations it went weaker and soon vanished. As for Tom Bombadil I guess he is a Maiar who went insane. Still good tho.

I'm curious about something in the Lore. Is it a possibility that Wargs and Beorn are both skin-changers? The Warg also were able to speak but perhaps the evil of Morgoth or Sauron trapped them in their animal forms? They were both great beasts in their animal form and it wouldn't surprise me if Beorn was not susceptible to the draw of evil as the Wargs who became enthralled and enslaved by orcs. I really do need to look more into the depths of the Lore.

@@greenpumpkin6650 As it always will be with any film made from a book. A book allows the reader to create how they see them in their mind with a few words to guide them. A film will never be able to account for the millions of different ways the readers imagined things to be.

Beorn was a Great Chief, indeed. Have always loved tales of skinwalkers, be they natural, peaceful, cursed or punishments for evil done. Lot of cultures share such tales. I was interested in the female Beornings, much as dwarves & Ents, because they aren’t really elaborated on too much. Thank you for the videos and streams.
