As a historical and spiritual figure, David the shepherd boy who becomes king, truly dominates our thoughts in so many ways. We see the rugged, handsome boy alone in the field when Samuel trots in to town with a bottle of oil in his belt, ready to anoint the new king. We see David anointed, blessed and beloved of Yahweh, defeating Goliath the giant. We hear the sweet music that soothed Saul’s soul plucked from the strings of David and who can forget his first love, Michal the princess of Israel. We follow David in to a cave, out into the wilderness, in to Hebron and finally the city of David from where he rules for over 30 years. Yet the household David grew up in, was not just the home of Jesse and 8 sons, but it was also a home with a matriarch and two sisters who would play a vital role in David’s upbringing. David's sisters were influential, they were matriarhcs and they are named in the scriptures, their influence is explored in this teaching. I also look at David's mother and provide a scriptural context for her, using the Bible alone, enjoy!
