Who Were the 12 Apostles? [Whiteboard Bible Study] 

I'm here as 'The Chosen' has really piqued my interest in the gospels.

You need to add this about Thomas: He asked Jesus a really important question: Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:5-6)

All credit goes to St. Thomas for taking the pain to sail to Southern India in AD52 in search of the Jewish Community in Kerala, evangelising them. Till today we believe that he was the source of early christianity just like our ancestors before us (even though later on western missionaries also had a role in shaping and reforming our beliefs.)

12 is a symbol of wholeness. Like there are 12 months in a year. I bet you could associate each apostle with a zodiac sign if we had more information about them. I also imagine that you could organize them into four groups that associate with spring, summer, fall, winter or earth, wind, fire and water or both. The cross has four parts to it. Jesus is the organizing principle at the center of all of this much like the sun. Just another layer of truth stacked on many others.

Great video! Thank you! Had never thought of the 12 sons of Israel being "a nation tasked with representing God to the world," and likewise, the 12 Apostles being the beginning of "'New Israel,' the kingdom of God."

Also, it is possible that the three people that the Lord chose to be close to Him represented three different types of saints… Peter’s main focus may have been leading the church. James main focus may have been being a martyr for his faith. John’s main focus may have been to be a prophet foretelling the end of days.

Hi Jeffrey, Love the videos, thanks for sharing. Some additional facts. In this video @6:46 you talk about James and John, the sons of Zebedee. Their Mother was actually Salome, who was coincidentally the sister of Mary (Jesus' Mother!). So for John and James to take care of Mary after Jesus is crucified, it just makes family sense. Jesus, James and John were actually cousins! Coincidentally, John the Baptist (and this is a weird one), who was born from Elizabeth, was Mary's Cousin, so even John the Baptist was a 2nd cousin (or at least family), based on Luk 1-3. While I agree personally that John of Zebedee was the writer of John, 1-3John and even Revelations, he is also the only one that died of natural causes at an old age, even after an attempt of killing him by throwing him in boiling oil, failed. While he is referred to as the 'Elder' and the "Evangelist", these gifts were placed in the church (Eph 4:11-16, Rom 12, 1Cor12) - which I believe were the gifts he "manifested" while serving God. It would be good to give the references, WE DO KNOW. For example Philip is not the same as the Philip w 4 prophetesses of Acts or that Nathaniel w a reputation of guileless questioning the feeding of the followers etc

Why is there so little information on those Jesus kept closest to him?

According to Matthew 10:8 the disciples had the power to raise the dead. So if one died, one of the others could raise him from the dead. Therefore, they should all be alive today. Yet nobody is older than 125

Mathias was chosen by the remaining eleven, Paul was chosen by Christ. Revelations 21:14 states the twelve apostles are the twelve foundation stones. Who is number 12? Paul, Judas, Mathias?
