The 56 delegates of the Continental Congress engrained themselves into American history when they signed The Declaration of Independence in 1776. Sarah Kay Bierle of the American Battlefield Trust takes a deeper look into who these men were and details the sacrifices that were made for American Independence.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

Don't forget, most of these men lost property, lost fortunes, lost family and lost their lives. Including the young Rutledge from South Carolina. Brave brave men. The likes of which we could use today.

The declaration didn't serve as the foundation for a "new nation." It was a document of secession, and it declared that there were 13 separate states,.

Without the Declaration of Independence the Constitution would not have been possible therefore it is considered as the foundation of American Democracy
