Hey everyone. This is Matt. Yes, I'm still here! 😀 I’ve been busy with a top secret project so Jack Rackam has been helping me with the narration. I will still be the one making the charts and responding to comments though and I'll still be narrating from time to time. So stay tuned ... we've got lots of great stuff planned for 2020. 1st. Yes, first time ever I hear an English speaker pronounce João correctly! :D Congrats! 2nd. Curious facts: When Brazil became independent, certain African kingdoms whose economy depended heavily on slave trade requested to become colonies of Brazil to benefit of the close relationship. Pedro rejected the idea. Also, Greece was going through its own process of independence from the Ottoman Empire and looking for a king of their own. Before they settled for Otto, they actually asked Pedro I if he would be interested and even came up with some lineage linking him to the Byzantine emperors (I don't know if to Constantine I or XI, one of the two). So, there is some alternate timeline in the multiverse where Rio becomes the capital a transatlantic *and* Mediterranean Empire. Would it have prevented the republican coup? Would it have outlasted WW I and II? How the close connection of Brazil, Greece and some African countries affect each of these countries? What would an afro-luso-brazilian-hellenic society look like? We'll never know but it's fun to imagine. :)

@@lordarthur2165 As a Brazilian, I disagree, most of the monarchists legitimely know the history of our country and that's why they support the change for a monarchy. Could you imagine the United States being deprived of their founding fathers like George Washington and all of that? That is a weird thought, and is exactly what we are going through being disconnected to our real founding fathers. My thought is that Brazil would work way better as a Constitutional Monarchy under a Emperor as moderator power, just like it was in the 19th Century - but of course, with adaptations to our current times, we desperately need it and I am thankful that the movement is growing to restore our identity, pride and glory.

I won't say which one is better because I don't live in brazil but I assume the brazilian people would know best about it.

The new instantly lead to a growing movement to bring back Pedro II body to Brazil. For a moment, the Republican government refused. But Brazilian favour the Brazilian Indenpendent Day more than Republic Day, more and more statued of him was erected at town across Brazil until a presidential candidate promise to bring back his body and he win the election. @@jeatcleave This what the wikipedia said he was Emperor Pedro the Magnanimous, "Isabel wished to hold a discreet and private burial ceremony, but she eventually agreed to the French government's request for a state funeral. On 9 December, thousands of mourners attended the ceremony at La Madeleine. Aside from Pedro's family, these included: Francesco II, former king of the Two Sicilies; Isabel II, former queen of Spain; Philippe, comte de Paris; and other members of European royalty. Also present were General Joseph Brugère, representing President Sadi Carnot; the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies as well as their members; diplomats; and other representatives of the French government. Nearly all members of the Institut de France were in attendance.Other governments from the Americas and Europe sent representatives, as did Ottoman Turkey, China, Japan and Persia.Following the services, the coffin was taken in procession to the railway station to begin its trip to Portugal. Around 300,000 people lined the route under incessant rain and cold. The journey continued on to the Church of São Vicente de Fora near Lisbon, where the body of Pedro was interred in the Royal Pantheon of the House of Braganza on 12 December. The Brazilian republican government, "fearful of a backlash resulting from the death of the Emperor", banned any official reaction. Nevertheless, the Brazilians were far from indifferent to Pedro's demise, and "repercussions in Brazil were also immense, despite the government's effort to suppress. There were demonstrations of sorrow throughout the country: shuttered business activity, flags displayed at half-staff, black armbands on clothes, death knells, religious ceremonies."Masses were held in memory of Pedro throughout Brazil, and he and the monarchy were praised in the eulogies that followed.

Isabel abolished slavery in name of her father, Pedro II. Isabel was serving as regent, that means she signed in name of her father, so technically was Dom Pedro II, just as Leopoldina signed the independence in name of Pedro I.

Prince Pedro actually affirmed his resignation later. what happened is that monarchists in support of him and some officials said his resignation wasn't valid for some reasons, and he said it was a personal resignation, not applying to his heirs. But later he said he affirmed his resignation nonetheless and that there shall be no conflict for the throne between the family. His resignation: "I, Prince Dom Pedro de Alcantara Luiz Philippe Maria Gastão Miguel Gabriel Raphael Gonzaga of Orléans and Bragança, having maturely reflected, decided to renounce the right that, according to the Constitution of the Empire of Brazil promulgated on March 25, 1824, belongs to me to the Crown of the same country. I therefore declare that by my very free and spontaneous will I hereby give up and renounce, not only for myself, but for each and every one of my descendants, any and all rights that the said Constitution confers on us to the Brazilian Crown and Throne , which will pass to the lines that follow mine according to the order of succession established by Art. 117. Before God, I promise for myself and my descendants to maintain this declaration." Cannes, October 30, 1908 Signed: Pedro de Alcântara de Orléans and Bragança His comment about the validity of the document: "When many years ago I renounced my rights as head of the Imperial House of Brazil in favor of my brother Prince D. Luiz, I did so only on a personal basis without complying with the determinations of the Laws of the extinct Empire of Brazil, without prior consultation to the nation, without the necessary protocols that precede acts of this nature, it was not, moreover, a hereditary renunciation. But later speaking in Europe and during my visits to Brazil, with some monarchists, I realized that my resignation is not valid for many reasons, in addition to those I have just mentioned. Counselor João Alfredo, who had an authentic copy of the resignation in his possession, also told me the same opinion." His later comment about it: "It's out there that I want to recover the rights of eventual succession to the throne of Brazil, at the expense of d. Pedro Henrique, my nephew, reneging on my resignation in 1908. My resignation, in 1908, is valid, although many monarchists [...] understood that, politically and according to Brazilian laws that were in force in 1889, it must be ratified by the Chambers if the monarchy is restored. By the way, in my family there will never be dissensions or disputes because of the imperial power."

The main reason the Brazilian Monarchy fell was the abolition of slavery. Dom Pedro did not like the institution, and Isabel, the heir to the throne who was expected to start her reign soon, thought it a national disgrace and was determined to end it, which she did. As to the current head of the Brazilian Imperial House, Dom Luiz, and his branch of the family, although the most militant for the cause of the monarchy, they are an impediment for their extreme right wing views on everything, and their association with unpalatable extreme right wing groups, totally counter to the Braganza tradition. They seem to live in a bubble.

@@jeanninegodwin2285 I beg to differ but it isn’t enough to disagree. I must show you that it is an opinion based not on prejudice but facts. A couple of examples will suffice and you don’t have to be Brazilian to know these things. Their pronouncement that global warming is communist propaganda is regrettable given that global warming is the preeminent moral cause of our time, and more than that, really. Their anti-chinese xenophobia is not a good thing for a Brazilian Prince. It is one thing to pronounce an opinion on a China policy - right or wrong - and another to try to promote anti Chinese xenophobia more so that there are many Brazilians of Chinese ancestry. And I am told that their stance on the Pope is even more egregious. Their lovefest with Jair Bolsonaro, the President of Brazil, is baffling to say the least. The man has done so much damage to his country that will take many years to repair. His discourse, associates, and methods are anything but dignified or moral. I would give you Juan Carlos and Felipe, or even Pedro and Isabel, for contrast, but this is too long already and people in this blog may not be interested in the subject, anyway.

In Russia the Communists murdered well over 23 million people! I have personally met Dom Luiz and have listened to several of his presentations . I have to say that I am aware that the theory of Global Warming is used to impose heavy taxes on the Citizens of many Countries and many Scientists do not support the theory that Global Warming is caused by mans actions and use of fossil fuels. Pedro de Alcantara’s renunciation was completely valid; and the document he signed explicitly said he was resigning the crown for his decedents as well. Only later in life he and Pedro Gastão, his son started trying to “reclaim” the throne…. Pedro Gastão married a Bourbon to try to elevate his “royal status” - but his sons and grandson married commoners and don’t give a damn about the monarchist cause…I don’t think there are any Brazilian monarchists who currently support this branch.

The current Brazilian house is a cadet branch of House Orléans, so if it were extinguished, I assume succession would probably go to House Orléans rather than Saxe-Coburg-Braganza. Although, technically, if we go by the 1824 constitution, only Brazilian nationals can actually inherit the throne, and the Parliament would get to decide which dynasty would actually have it.

Just a correction, Pedro de Alcântara never wanted to be the ruler of Brazil. The morganatic marriage was the way that him and his mother found of abdicating the throne (both he and his brother, Luiz, wanted to leave the austrian army, with the condition of getting marriage, that both got in the year of 1908). Years later he made an intreview saying "It is out there that I intend to recover the rights of eventual succession to the throne of Brazil, with prejudice to d. Pedro Henrique, my nephew, denying my 1908 resignation. My resignation in 1908 is valid, although many monarchists (...) understood that, politically and by the Brazilian laws that were in force in 1889, it must be ratified by the Chambers in the in case the monarchy is restored. In fact, in my family there will never be dissensions or disputes over imperial power". He supported his nephew claims for his whole life, only his son tryed to "stole" this position during the campain of the 1993 plebiscite. About the french throne, the abdication of Pedro and his descendents were thinking about the Brazilian throne. Only in 1909, after his abdication for the brazilian throne, his father, Gaston d'Orleans, made a "deal" with his family of the House of Orleans recognizing oficialy the House of Orleans & Bragança as a different house, with claims over Brazil (with the Luiz's line) and over France (with Pedro's line beeing most senior, because his abdication was of the brazilian throne, not the french). Pedro's abdication wasn't required, but was his personal desire. Even during the monarchy (from his borning in 1875 till the exile in 1889), he never showed any desire of beeing the next emperor. His brother was always seen by his parents as the next monarch, the abdication in 1908 was only the formalization. The descendents of Pedro Gastão doesn't claims the throne, the monarchists doesn't recognize their branch and Pedro abdicated of his own free will for him and all his descendance for the brazilian throne.

Intante D. Miguel was the Queen's bastard child, he usurped the Crown from the senior line and, for that, had an attainder strip him of a right to which he should have never been eligible, as he was not the King's son. Furthermore, the law having been repealed by the Republic means nothing to monarchists, since it lacks legitimate authority. At Manuel II's expiration, nobody else had a valid claim and no agreement had been made between the King and any those claimants, but the man with the greatest support then happened to be from the Miguelist line, which makes him and his descendants the most eligible successors to the last undisputed King of Portugal.

I'm Brazilian (albeit half-British) and having studied in secondary education with a member of the line of Vassouras and knowing their story, I can vouch for the fact that they are generally very right wing: they are minarchists (not a typo; its a definition for proponents of small government), forwarding economic liberalism, and against disarmament, gay rights, abortion, and in some cases even divorce- considering their ultra-Catholic background. Luiz Philippe de Orléans e Bragança is deputy for the state of São Paulo and cofounder of Acorda Brasil, which impeached Dilma Rouseff- he's an example of their generally backwards political values. The Petrópolis line, while less politically ambitious are much more progressive and modern like contemporary European royals in the Benelux, Scandinavia (and to some extent, the UK). Monarchy would only work in Brazil under the Petrópolis line- and its establishment of a progressive regime could be a much more legitimate than any republican option considering Brazil's politics right now. However, Brazilians can't turn back time and national political ideologies, so after a century of republicanism, I doubt it would be a democratic process. Not to mention plenty of morganatic marriages took place in the Vassouras line- with people ranked much lower than a baroness of baronial lineage as was Pedro Gastão's wife. All the more reason for the Petrópolis branch to vie for power.
