When Zhang Liao dies by wu wasn't he a really old man..... and still was a menace. Zhang Fei being a drunken mess at times would be the thing to also hurt Shu
Historically Zhang Liao died of illness not injured by an arrow. And he's still a great threat for Sun Quan. The Sanguozhi related that, especially before the battle of Dongkou at 222 between Wei and Wu during the reign of Cao Pi. At this time Zhang Liao was still a threat for Sun Quan despite his old âge. The biaised book Romance of Three Kingdoms ignored that fact I wonder why ... Surely to restore the honor of Wu 😊. This is why Zhang Liao is definively the best general of Three Kingdoms.
Yooo! The CHILLS I got from just watching the intro again are absolutely insane. You did such an absolutely amazing job of hyping this for all of us, it’s insane; genuinely felt like I was getting ready to watch the next big box office hit. That said, I wasn’t sure how this video was gonna go down (ie: how you were going to determine the winner), so I LOVED the various categories you popped in to truly weigh (*wink wink, nudge nudge*) in. Also can we give a shoutout to your animator for crafting that final scene? It really gave some nice old-school anime vibes that got us all hooked in this general genre in the first place. The amount of work, love, and research that went into this is palpable. It was 1000% worth the wait. Also highkey loved Zhang Fei getting merked by his own team… again. And I’d be a darn liar if I didn’t say I was immeasurably ecstatic that Wei > Shu. I’m gonna be honest shu all the way like I’m not being biased, but they have the reach of their weapons. They have reach and speed and they have strength. They also have the Marshall. Powers they also have tacticians military experience off the Ying yang, and they all work very very well together, like the only one that might be a little out of it would be macho. But even then he can hold his own and he’s not stupid. He might break formation, but he would stay close enough for his team to help him out. He could also break formation to other team members while he’s engaged with an enemy like this is no way that shu can lose there’s only two warriors on Wei now if you were to put their leaders in the equation, that would be a turning point one of the very few, but even then I still think they would win

Im glad you took into account all other aspects other than the novel and games because just going by the novel itself it would be an easy win for Shu. Got to take historical aspects into account for these comparisons to work! Zhang Liao I've got to rate in terms of overall feats, leadership skills, and fictional portrayal as the one being able to outlast the Shu general onslaught and even do a little 2 vs 1 action there. I think Zhang Liao under Lu Bu would have Guan Yu get the better of him, but peak He Fei era Zhang Liao when he was in straight up kill mode? Guan Yu might have his head lopped off. Zhao Yun had some crazy cool action in there too! I freaking love this types of what if videos and character comparisons. My favorite content from you and I will always be looking forward to a review series of the mainline games when you get around to it! I know that would be a big project for you so I can wait a long time for those videos to come out. Looking at the animation has got me thinking, DW needs an M rated title with blood and maybe even dismemberment. It adds so much more to the fights as well as the warriors. I can only dream that they would go that route. Suggestion: Now maybe Shu can make a comeback with a 5 vs 5 against Wu generals? For Wu's 5 maybe Gan Ning, Taishi Ci, Zhou Tai, Lu Meng, and Ling Tong? I think it would be a heck of a matchup! Keep it coming bro!

And yeah it was tough to decide and because it is a team battle instead of 1 v 1 and the limited amount I could do with the animation, I had to kill certain people at certain times and all that, another 5 v 5 will be way later cause Ill need to fundraise up again and all that! and the reviews for the games are written, i just dont know where to start with those, but they will happen! I agree with the outcome man! I’ve been team Wei ever since DW2 but this is my UNBIASED opinion. Individually, Shu is stronger but what will eventually lead to their downfall is their egos. For example, Guan Yu wanted to duel Ma Chao to see if he earned his right to be one of the 5 Shu Tiger Generals. On the other hand, Wei is united my one common purpose and that’s to see Cao Cao’s dreams come to fruition. Same here bro! This series will forever hold a special place in my heart. Been playing this series since DW2! But out of all DW games, DW3 is my GOAT. 🤙🏾
Yes! Thats what came down to deciding Wei, Cause in the animation im limited to show how shu would really dissolve in this fight, the only real hint to it was zhang fei's friendly fire death, but Wei's teamwork I think would put them over the edge for this one for sure
I dont know about guan yu losing 1v1 against zhang liao even though zhang liao my favorite. Zhao yun is accurate as hell just beast mode. Dian Wei as well beast mode.
It was tough to decide how to kill him, so I went with this is fan castle guan yu who seemed to lose his edge and lost a duel to pang de so I gave it to Zhang Liao, In a 1 v 1 in their primes respectively, I think Yu takes it but, the team aspect along with everything combined into both characters, I gave it to Liao, appreciate u!

What an interesting idea for a vs type of scenario, this would honestly be pretty tough to decide for a lot of reasons like legit I don't know who would win here personally so I'm definitely excited to see other people's takes with something so precise.
@@TheNightowlGaming for sure, I mean thinking a bit about it for a little bit I think ultimately wei would come out with the "W" in this situation it's the whole teamwork and comradeery aspect that really made the difference to me, cus the wei forces have always just demonstrated top tier teamwork and comradeery in pretty much every game so it makes sense for them to eventually wear shu down.
I used to be team shu when i was younger until i watched the series and realised Liu Bei and his sworn brothers became arrogant which lead to their deaths, Now im Team Wei since when they made a mistake they right that wrong

😂 Dan! yeah it was tough to depict a team battle in the 1v1s, the death of Yu to Liao isnt a representative 1v1 but it takes into account all of the teams flaws and weaknesses and I just had Liao kill Yu to represent that
I'm actually ok with that part. I think there nobody else he could lose to honestly. Even though I disagree with the overall outcome. I think Shu really should've had this. A team with Guan Yu Zhoe Yun and Zhang Fei should defeat literally anyone else in this game I believe. I'd say they are the top fighters in this match up and they all on 1 side. This should've been a clap
I did not expect the outcome - underestimated Dian Wei's input I suppose. I'm glad we agree that Shu would've won if it was against the original Elite Five (even though I like Wei much more than I do Shu 😬) I enjoyed watching this a lot, devoured the whole vid in one breath. Not sure I agree with the end result based on how much of a beast Guan Yu is generally depicted as, I mean you don't get called the "God of War" for no reason. Now granted the only one of Wei that I think stands a chance of beating him would be Zhang Liao, but overall I just don't see Zhang Fei or Ma Chao going down that easy. Ma Chao was debatably only tied for 2nd behind Guan Yu in terms of battle prowess. As I believe that Zhao Yun, Zhang Fei and Ma Chao are in a three-way tie. Zhang Fei being there due to his resilience and raw power, Zhao Yun for his martial skill and prowess, and Ma Chao for his mix of strength and martial skill. Huang Zhong is definitely the weakest of the five but that's only due to his age, his skill and prowess are why he's so dangerous, it's just that age will dull you at a certain point. Also Ma Chao cause of death is a grey area, fairly unknown, but it's more so accepted that he died of illness, which given how much fighting happened throughout his life speaks to his strength. Though regardless it was an interesting video.
glad you enjoyed it! the strongest factor for Wei is there teamwork, Wei is able to work much more together as a unit than Shu ever did, the animation I can only show so much due to budget and time, but in terms of pure tactics of the 5, Wei has a strong advantage, among the 5 Shu none of them are tacticians, but Zhang He on Wei was said to be so adaptable he was pretty much a strategist and navigating his other 4 teammates to get an advantage over the boisterous Guan Yu, Fei and Ma Chao they would find a way to overcome them, definitely is a close one but Wei as a team and faction is monstrous, theres a reason the origin of unification is in Wei
Thing is the five elites of wei all deserve to be called great generals imo, they all had long and successful military careers spanning like 30-40+ years. True, the tiger generals were all great warriors, but for me Huang Zhong is the only one you could call a great general, wei’s elites are just on a different level tactically + they often did work together and did so very effectively!

Honestly was expecting Dian Wei to get up despite his injuries (since Zhou didnt double tap him) and sac himself holding Zhou in place so Zhang could finish the battle. It could've been a nod to his defence of Cao Cao despite his injuries from Jia Xius traps and plots

This was fine. I disagree what Zhang Liao could beat Guan Yu especially with no help. Yeah i understand Zhang Liao's feats at He Fei but Guan Yu's a Fan Castle is similar, they both died in their respective scenarios but if you took Guan Yu and put him in Zhang Liao's scenario it's hard to see him dying vs putting Zhang Laio in Guan Yu's fan castle scenario. Zhao Yun 2 v 1ing and beating Dian Wei during it? Ehh. Huang Zhong shooting Zhang Fei in the eye by accident? Idk, Zhang Fei is only messy when he's drunk. Sober and Focus Zhang Fei is right beside Guan Yu in every aspect. Li Dian i don't think should be here over Xu Chu who is basically the capable replacement to Dian Wei for Cao Cao when he passes away. I have a lot of disagreements to how this all went down. Good job with the effect nonetheless though
With the animation, I have a lot of limitations on what I could actually show + I couldn't talk about everything for each character, the reason characters died certain ways was because of those limitations. In a team aspect, that's what is taking a lot of the characters out along with their weaknesses and flaws. Everything is considered for this, also Li Dian isn't in this. Also Zhang liao didnt die at Hefei, he died of illness, his death in the games/novel is fabricated. There's a lot of small details I had to keep out due to time, like Zhao Yun being nearly perfect in history & lots of others, more than happy to discuss alot of research and time went into this vid 😁
Historical analysis Wei side Zhang Liao - the living horror that haunted Sun Wu. 11/10 General. This guy overshadows every other general in Wei. Dian Wei - I also agree Yu Jin's later moments were not great. Dian Wei is probably the more impressive General. Koei Tecmo seemed to rolled both Dian Wei and Xu Chu to make their DW character. Actually made Lu Bu retreat. 10/10 bodyguard. Can't say much about general career because it's too short lived but the fact he pushed Lu Bu back should make him at least a 7/10. Honestly Yu Jin would have been a 8/10 if I squinted my eyes hard enough to ignore his downfall. Yue Jin - Was there defending Hefei castle against the insane odd. But that feat is overshadowed by Zhang Liao. He was nevertheless consistent throughout the career. Notably he fought Guan Yu and drove him away. 8/10 Xu Huang - Also fought Guan Yu and won. I'm starting to think the odds might be against the Shu here. Underrated. Had a long military career under Cao Cao and Cao Pi and never lost. The account of him being shot in the forehead by Meng Da was fictional. He died of illness. 9/10 Zhang He - Originally Yuan Shao's general but Yuan Shao didn't value him and his insights. Surrendered to Cao Cao when he had enough of Yuan Shao's incompetence and arrogance. In my opinion, such maneuvre should be more highly regarded. And it turns out he's a beast and Yuan Shao should have listened to him. Zhuge Liang's first Northern Expedition was a disaster. This guy was the reason. He pursued after Zhuge Liang and got killed in an ambush in Mount Qi. It's not clear if he volunteered to do that or Sima Yi ordered him. 8/10 Overall: 43. Shu side Guan Yu - I'm afraid impressions on this guy has been twisted by fictions and exaggerations. Slaying Hua Xiong easily when Hua Xiong was seemingly invincible, well, invincible Hua Xiong was fictional. Historically, Hua Xiong didn't have any notable achievement. Same for Yan Liang and Wen Chou. It wasn't that he spared Cao Cao in battle of Chi Bi, he was driven away by overwhelming reinforcement. Still, he did kick asses. 7/10 Zhao Yun - Oh boy. The scary thing about this guy is the story of him rushing back north in the battle of Changban to rescue Liu Shan and Lady Gan seems historically accurate. Although we don't know how it was done and if there was really an effort by Cao's army to exterminate them. The battle of Changban was a defeat for him, but that is because Cao Cao was a better general than Liu Bei. He fought Cao Cao force in the battle of Han river with terrible odd, and outwitted Cao Cao completely. He didn't devastate Cao Cao the way Zhang Liao did Sun Quan, but he didn't manage to catch Cao Cao by surprise, and Cao Cao was a much better general than Sun Quan. 10/10 Zhang Fei - He wasn't drunk and lost Xiapi to Lu Bu. Lu Bu was just too strong for him. This makes him a better general in my opinion, rather than the fictional account. Didn't shout and kill Xiahou Jie at Changban, but was a good rearguard. Fought Zhang He with an advantage and won. If I squinted my eyes hard enough he's 8/10. Huang Zhong - Highly regarded by all. Interestingly there isn't many thing recorded about him other than the Battle of Dingjun, but that was an impressive battle. 7/10 Ma Chao - Historically this guy was reputedly inhumane, but let's not hold that against him as a general. He lost to Cao Cao, but really he lost to Jia Xu, whom I think is probably the smartest guy overall in that period. This guy started his career in the worst situation of all these generals and suffered a string of failures, but I think if it had been anyone else, they would have died quite early. He only lived because he was so violent and vicious. 7/10 Overall: 39 Wei wins for me. Honestly even before deep analysis, just Zhang Liao alone gives me the impression that Wei wins.
Much respect to you for including Ma Chao in this. As my all time favorite officer, biased or not, I always felt like he was very unappreciated in the games.
In ROTK series i think Shu have slight edge. They have Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Ma Chao, Huang Zhong. They have better War stat than 5 Wei highest War stat
War stat I dont go off of, it's hard to just use those as blanket wins when the feats and things the characters have done in the novel & games really show off thier skill, historically, maybe, but even then Wei was the one who technically won it all.. teamwork was impeccabllee for them
Man I love this series and I’m so invested please make more. I agree with the assessment up until you said zhang fei dies to friendly fire, even if we overlook he is one of the strongest of all of them the bigger problem is huang zhong doesn’t miss and for him to make the mistake of shooting his own team mate is a big no for me I feel as tho dian wei is one of my favourite out of the bunch he also is likely to be one of the first dispatched as he has never shown he is capable of competing with someone of the level of zhang. I admit in a one on one I would probally choose dian wei as an opponent last due to his scary nature but in terms of feats and experience he ranks quite low here all though being biased I’m glad he looked so good here. I believe shu would win due to the above points however If zhang fei fell this would be the correct outcome Also Zhang Liao and guan yu fight i personally don’t believe would end that way not cause I think the result is wrong but simply I don’t see either being able to kill the other. ( if I had to pick one I do believe guan yu would win in a one on one given he was the god of war and is famous for only being matchable by Lubu PS if you ever did a podcast on this I would absolutely love to get involved I always love there hypothetical battles but have no one else interested to have the discussions with All in all whilst I disagree you sure earned that subscribe good work keep it up

So its tough, I have to showcase the conglomerate of everything of a character within that small animation, so if you take only the positives of Zhang Fei/Guan Yu they certainly come out on top. However, you ahve to take that Guan Yu has shown to been beaten by Zhang Liao (DW7) if not at least similar strength (DW5) and Im taking those as canon events since they were part of the story for the main games. Also Guan Yu lost to Pang De who is significantly weaker AND Guan Yu couldnt defeat Ji Ling where Zhang Fei could. He's immensely powerful but with everything considered he falls to Zhang Liao who's basically had a perfect record and his only real stub is his death in DW7. Also, Huang Zhong is amazing but, if he shoots an arrow he can no longer curve the arrow, Jiang Wei caught an arrow shot by Guo Huai and used it to kill him and he's significantly weaker than Dian Wei. I could've had him catch it, but zhang fei needed to be killed off, as soon as the arrow flies, Huang has no control over what happens anymore. Just my thoughts, I did a ton of research for this and my top 50 strongest characters vid so I think it's as accurate as it can get until DW10 come sout

In a simple duel I think he could take most of these guys but it a battle mid war he loses to a lot of them if that makes sense not sure if it does it’s late where I am but the games doesn’t do pang de justice from what i understand Just to be clear im not challenging your knowledge I started watching you 2 days ago and im learning a lot I didn’t know so I may be wrong In conclusion I feel as though in a five vs five shu wins however if these five assembled armies and went to war with the military might wei takes it by a landslide
Lol, it was a little dorky, but a fun video nonetheless. I'm surprised you chose to leave out Xiahou Dun though, from the Wei side. I always felt like he was "the guy" of Wei. At least early on. I could be wrong though, my perspectives on the series are from my childhood lenses, lol.

That's totally fair! I think the team aspect is what would kill it for Shu, I couldnt do a super extravagant animation, so I did what I could with the limited time and resources, but yeah thats what tipped them over

Although I do believe in this scenario the only one holding the team back in this is Ma chao but only in terms of team coordination. even without Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Feis brotherly connection in combat is probably one of their strongest traits. And Huang Zhong I do agree is probably the heavily underrated, Id even go as far to say the most but thats me. Huang Zhong just works good with anybody in team coordination. He literally was one of the only people that actually worked with Wei Yan instead of fearing him

I think you would do awesome and have the creativity to put together some match ups kinda like the ( Elden Ring ) community does. Like seeing the animation and also getting to see an in game 5v5 all npc match up would be cool

Shu would beat Wei not by much but they would definitely win . Zhang Liao is a badass but C'mon how they going to do Guan YU Zhang Fei Zhao Yun and Liu Bei like that when GY ZF and LB was able to hold off the Mighty Lu Bu. Guan Yu vs Zhang Liao = Tie Zhang Fei vs Dian Wei = ZF win by a little Zhao Yun vs Xu Huang = Tie Ma Chao vs Yue Jun = Ma Chao win Huang Zhong vs Zhang He = Huang Zhong win If you ever played ROT3K you would see that Koei rate the Shu general Stat pretty high compared to the Wei general.
For sure, its a tough matchup either way however, the teamwork between wei vs shu is significant, the kingdom of Wei's cohesiveness is honestly what carries them over AND Zhang Liao beat GY, ZF & ZY all at once in DW7, there's a huge point there too, of course I cant go into everything and with limited funds I cant create the most accurate depiction I want with the animation, but the results are a conglomeration of everything put together between all characters not just what was said/shown in the vid, for time & money sake I had to keep most information out, I do respect the take as it is a very very close matchup

Before watching, I say that Shu will win the fight there is no doubt about that, but wei will be carried hard by Zhang Liao (and probably Xu Huang too)
Their teamwork carries hard for them, the margin in which they win is very small, definitely a close match but the forces of wei got the dub on this one
Xu Huang would bail out, he only took action in battles he knew he would win.. Zhang Liao would likely be the last man standing vs Shu with Yunchang, Bacho and Zilong left.. Zhang Liao is such a bad ass that he is pretty much a second Lu Bu.. this would be a battle similar to the three brothers vs Lu Bu.. i would have no doubt thar Zhang Liao could find a way to win this.. but Zilong and Yunchang prove to be just a little bit much for him.. now think about a world where Mengde actually decided to trust Lu Bu.. Cao Cao would have won it all for sure..

Perhaps, but from a teamwork aspect they got the edge, there's a reason wei technically won it all, the 5 from wei have a cohesiveness that would exploit Shus weakness and push their strength and they actually have a strategist on thei team with Zhang He while Shu, yes they're intelligent, they're nowhere near strategjst vs great generals and skill, very close match-up but putting EVERYTHING together I think wei wins it, also Wei outlives most of the Shu characters 🤙
I liked it but I wonder why you have "Shus Five Tiger Generals" (Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Huang Zhong, Ma Chao, Zhao Yun) fight four of The Five Elite Generals of Wei (Zhang He, Zhang Liao, Yue Jun, Xu Huang) and then Replace Yu Jin With Cao Cao´s bodyguard Dian Wei. I would have wanted Yu Jin to replace Dian Wei and see which of the 5 "Generals" would have won.
Wei team would win without a doubt. Shu is too overexaggerated, especially how some of Zhao Yun's accomplishments were actually acheived by Chen Dao. Guan Yu never killed Hua Xiong, Wen Chou, nor those 5 gate generals, and all Ma Chao did was sit in Han Zhong because Cao Cao was scared of him.
