I play King since T1 and I'm gonna play King til I die. I picked him "because cool" (him and AK). That's literally it. That's how you pick your main. It doesn't get deeper.
I'm also a king main played him since tekken 1, and I'm going to stick with him he's such a cool character. I really love him in 8 they did my boy right
I think the first and most important recommendation, is pick the character who speaks to you and will inspire you to play the most. Tekken is hard, and to get good its going to be a grind for every character. I tried learning how to play Tekken 7 with Katarina, when at the time I really wanted to learn Devil Jin, I ended up quitting. Now I am learning tekken 8, ignoring any sane beginner advice; I am learning Bryan because I think his combos are ruthless looking and super cool (despite how hard ju dash qcf 3 4 timing is for me), I am now having a blast regardless of my winrate. You will get a better winrate with Alisa in lower ranks than a mishima, but once you hit ranks where people know how to exploit the simplistic and linear gameplan you were using, you will hit a wall with a character that doesn't speak to you (or make you proud), and doesn't inspire you to learn the game on a deeper level, and you will likely quit.
thank you for this. i've had my eye on zafina since tekken 7 (i didn't purchase the dlc), so i was super excited to finally get my hands on her. unfortunately, i've caught myself feeling really discouraged by the community and it's claims about zafina being the worst character in the game. i've looked at other characters, but they just don't grab my attention the way that she does. i've decided that I'm going to main her regardless and hope for the best
Yeah dont let the execution barrier prevent you from playing a character you like because if you do enjoy playing as them, you will make the effort to do the higher execution moves with time.
@@alurosfdont let tiers dissuade you from playing a character you genuinely like. A TWT champion won using a character that was widely considered to be low-mid tier (Bears) in Tekken 7. Play who you want!
Thank you for sharing your experience, am a new Tekken player I really liked Mishimas an had the most fun with them but they were hard, was taking L's and switched to victor he is cool got many W with him but it will be much cooler winning with devil jin or renia, you gived me courage to learn them who cares about winning while ur not enjoying yourself that's why we play Games in the first place
I had a brief character crisis in Tekken 8 because i wanted to play Claudio but found him too simplistic and thought i would eventually get bored of him. But i adored his design and i love mages and stuff so he seemed like my perfect choice. Eventually i realized that simple isn’t so bad and he’s so much fun. So i made him my main. My takeaway from this is to stick to the character that inspires you and that gets you excited when in the character select screen. Make sure you have fun playing them, thats what games are initially made for
I also chose Claudio for his simplicity, not much bs going on, some strong moves (the hop kick is prob the best launcher), good focus on fundamentals when you pick Claudio, better in the long run.
Feels like the most popular characters for beginners are whichever character has the strongest lows or most hard to react to bullshit. Explains why Dragunof or Hwarang are so numerous in lower ranks.
I think it’s because you can buffer a lot I got a friend who only plays Tekken games he’s really good but when he plays 2d fighters he just straight mashing and missing inputs because of it
@@Merm1392 Yeah the buffers help and I personally feel you can be a lot more creative whereas most 2D games are about optimizing a few different character-specific elements while mastering the fundamentals. Like SpeedKicks said in this video, every Yoshimitsu player plays different. That's due to all the movement options and also the huge move list. Then you go back to SF6 and pretty much every Ken and JP is doing the same shit nonstop.
@@ZombieRommelyou nailed it. The game makes more sense because it’s more literal. And because you have all that freedom the freedom of expression makes it really satisfying.
1) Which character appeals to you visually or personality wise? Pick that character. 2) See if their playstyle fits you and boom you got your main. If they don't fit your style and you don't click with them, repeat step one.
Tekken 2 was my first Tekken game and Jun and Michelle have been my favorite characters. However, over the years ive gravitated towards Julia and Asuka due to their similar move set. Now with Jun returning and Julia/Michelle being absent for the first time, im going to be maining Jun and Asuka
I picked king because he roars and he’s a jaguar 😂. Aesthetics to me is the main thing that makes me play them. Potemkin is a big robot and DJ always dances which makes me enjoy looking at them and playing them
I have around 1300 hours on TK7 not really any prior. And My advice is.. Pick an easy character. I wanted to go the hardcore way in T7 playing entirely for fundamentals, but on top of that I wanted to play only hard characters. Bryan, Steve. I didn't get into Mishimas cause my fingers weren't ready for electrics. Anyway I do have some fundamental now. But my biggest improvement was when I played Kazumi for a while, reason being she is soo simple. Her gameplay and game plan are just pure fundamental. And this makes it very easy to focus on those things. When you play a hard character with a lot of execution and a complicated game plan as a beginner it's quite hard to focus on the actual fundamentals, cause your focus needs to be entirely on what YOU are doing most of the time and not what the opponent is doing. I still mainSteve now, but I also picked Azucena. And I can immediately tell how much easier and enjoyable it is to play a simple but effective character. (well she's not so simple, but her general gameplan is)
It depends what you prefer. Easy is great for players who just wanna win. But if you wanna style on them, and have that high satisfaction that you are better, pick execution heavy. Winning is not always everything. I suggest playing one easy and one complex character.
@@dupla0392 Yeah I agree. But it wasn't about winning that much. Even though losing non stop will make a lot of people quit. But what I was trying to say is. It's in my opinion easier if you go through the ladder of difficulty properly. Start off easy and build up to hard. Also it depends how much natural talent you have for that. Now obviously if you are somebody who installs Tekken first time and starts doing electrics right away you might as well start it off like that. But on average I think it's just an easier learning curve if you start easy and build up from there. Also one more thing. When I started out I had this mindset that I wouldn't enjoy the game if I chose and easy character. And now I realize I was wrong about it. In a game that hard starting with an easy character is still super challenging and will take off a bit of that overwhelming learning curve.
People who say just play whatever looks cool are missing the point that new players don't know what they like. It's good to start with a character that is easy and good for developing mechanics at least for the beginning.
Im new to Tekken, and when I was going through the roster, I was torn between playing Jun or Raven. I couldn't decide between them so I decided they'll fight for the spot to be my main. So I setup a CPU vs CPU FT3 between the two, and Raven won 3-1. Man, I really dropped Jun a Top Tier apparently... oh well Raven is mad fun and cool.
I started a couple days ago and this is my first tekken game or 3d fighter always been a street fighter/MK player. Paul phoenix has been good for learning the game for me.
I picked Lee Chaolan because if I'm gonna lose, I wanna lose in style. + Him being the hardest character makes it even more rewarding for performing and winning on him.
@chiko7547 he had more stances I think with super dragon fly and paradise death as an air suicide. I think as this point they have ported most of moves over to tekken.
DOA had a bit of influence over my current main (Xiaoyu). I learned to play a lot of characters on Tekken 5, but ultimately she stood out to me the most. My secondary is the one im having a problem choosing, though.
I've always been a raven player, seeing him officially come back as RAVEN on tekken 8 was amazing. His move list is fun and unique, can't get enough of him. Take it from me new players, LEARN RAVEN
9:00 this is precisely why i picked these two as my main in T8 i been a drag main since alittle in tt2 but really got into him in T7 when he was heavily nerfed. And ive always loved Jun and was happy she was back in T8. I mean i wanna get to it and win, but these two go about it in two different ways. And i didn't pick these two cause they're strong right now. They just happened to be so when the game dropped 😅
Started with King since he's been my main forever, but lowkey found him hard against characters with so many mixups. I picked up Victor and immediately felt like I could turn by brain off and win. Got to eliminator rank quick af
yeah I realize that now. I don't really like his gameplay though and haven't played him since... my next goal is to try Lili since that's the one character that players I've lost to seem to mash the most with
Sf6 was my first fighting game and this is my first Tekken. I’m mailing Reina run because I think she looks cool. I wanted to learn Steve too since I box, but I was advised that was a bad idea 😂
I've been playing Steve since Tekken 5. I wouldn't recommend him for beginners. He plays Tekken on hard mode. His whole gameplan is fishing for counter hits because he has to whereas counter hits are just a plus for everyone else.
I played a good loud of tekken on ps2, but never took it too seriously, this os the first one I'm truly trying to learn, doing it with Nina and loving it, although I'm finding it hard af lol
Played Tekken 1-5. Didn’t play again til Tekken 7. I’ve played Bryan Fury and Paul all this time!! I picked Steve by accident the other day and man I fell in love!! I don’t know why he just clicks with me!! BUT WOW he’s hard to learn!! I’m not an aggressive player and you gotta pressure people!! Yeah I really SUCK with him 😂😂😂 but I’m having a blast learning him
New to FGC games I saw the recommendations but I like Azucena just cuz she can dance. How much pain should I expect 1 out of 10. (I'm a Genji main lmaooo)
Since tekken 2 jun and tekken 3 Hwoarang and eddy and im tag i used Jun and Hwoarang together or eddy and Hwoarang or jun etc than i skipped 4 sadly but in 5 i played Hwoarang of course and some jin here and there. Just pick a character that appeals to you honeslty. Try out which character feels right when your practicing etc.
I got to destroyer rank with raven, I feel pretty comfy with him but I know I could pick up and flowchart better with easier characters. Should I just stick to him and keep practicing? Or maybe find a second main
Still early in the game cycle, I feel like trying out some characters is gonna be beneficial even when not playing them because you understand how to play against them. It’s my first time taking Tekken seriously, started off with Lars but somehow wanna try out Kazuya. If you have fun with Raven and keep progressing just stay with him, that’s how I am gonna start of characters without worrying too much
Idk if you are but try not to rely on flowcharts too much becuase your gonna rank up and then hit a wall once you go against players that know how to deal with it.
@@myjokeisfunny-laugh that’s what I’m working on now, reading my opponent and mixing up my game. Also defense and punishing, still haven’t fought much of the roster
#Tekken8 takeover 😎 would love to see lei wu long back in the game i heard a rumor that virtua fighter might be making a reboot to the series! gonna be dope to see
For me with Tekken? It's both moveset and aesthetic. And to me the coalescence of those two ideals have been trash when it comes to most of the new characters post 5; aside from Bob, Zafina, Master Raven, Lidia, and Leroy. So until we get Lidia, and/or Xiao Meng like the leaks suggest, or Lei Wulong makes his way back by some miracle? Yoshi and Jun it is.
@@dripfoe_3307he's easy in regards to beginner levels. You can button mash with Steve for the first few levels. B1 gets you far. People also don't know the matchup early. It's when you actually have to learn him and his cancels that it gets crazy.
Rock paper scissors But what it actually means is 1 move or 1 setup that covers/counters multiple of the opponents options I suggest u go to the fighting game glossary by infil if u want to know fgc lingo
My favorite character is Heihachi and his replacement is super popular. Guess he's not coming back anytime soon. Tekken 8 handing me the biggest L. Maybe time to try SF6 lol.
exactly, people dont understand how much king struggles in high ranks against crouch while standing launching mishima's and the pressure from dragonuv and there BULLSHIT hit confirm strings during heat that deals 80 damage. King probably has the worst heat because he ONLY has F21 which can be fucking ducked, while being a non combo extender, only for wall carry. Sure king has grabs, but with so many characters having pressure, its hard to get your plus frames into giant swing. ITS ridiculously hard.
@@kevinsyz1201 you totally understand. King is easy for people who can do a good job at reading and conditioning their opponent. Which makes them easy scrub killers but not easy to mash like everyone makes it seem
why do people say King is easy? He is a neutral character playing against heavy string characters that deal like 80 damage on hit confirms its literally so hard as king
Ive been playing Tekken since the first installment didnt have a true main (usually switched between Law, Kazuya, Heihachi, & Jin) untill Tekken 5 introduced Raven and haven't looked back since.
i wish all combat games takes away the one button super damagde. that should be a difficult combo nota button, u loose way to much damgde, same for Mk11 as fan, stf6 actually dont take that much of the health vs this games, however Stf is harder to learn, even if has it has less moves than tekken characters . Actually think tekken in a Nioh 2 combat style 3D would be cool, tweek it to ne a fighting game , that shitt is a RPG. however damn cool fighting system. my dream game for games like this to implment a mechanic like that and add some
Only a select few characters terrify me on the versus screen like King, Kuma, Panda, Jack, Xiaoyu, and Yoshimitsu. You know shit is about to go down cause only diehards and insane people pick these select few 😄. Claudio players tend to be good also!
