The singer Mike Patton is called The Man Of A 1,000 voices for a reason. Dude can sing, scream, growl, lounge sing, and even sing Spanish opera. Dudes a genius. You guys need to do a lot more reactions to Faith No More. They are a very diverse sounding band. They were the first band to mix rap and Metal. Long before NuMetal did it.
@@jhamilton1007 Technically *pushes glasses up nose* the Anthrax and Public Enemy version of "Bring The Noise" was released in 1991, but Anthrax did metal + rap thing even earlier in 1987 with "I'm The Man". And Sir Mixalot did "Iron Man" with Metal Church in 1988. And then there were the Beastie Boys in 1986 with "Fight For Your Right (To Party)". And I do believe Faith No More released "We Care A Lot" in 1986 as well.. so I think they and Beastie Boys share the "first to do it" title. ;)
There are soo many good FNM songs and so diverse too! Evidence, Ashes to Ashes, The Real Thing, Just a Man, Stripsearch, Caffeine, Edge of the World, Last to Know, Surprise! You’re Dead! and so many others. One of my fave bands of all time and so glad you’ve reacted to this classic
yeah i think these noobs would be better suited to "Album of the Year", even though it's not even FNM's top 4 albums. Probably best to start there given what I've seen them like.
Mike Patton's lyrics were always difficult to decipher. I think the best rule of thumb when trying to find meaning is that it is usually some sort of sexual depravity, lol.
I look at it as a man who understands his better half is perfect, but when she leaves him (because she’s going through a midlife crisis) she is just a woman. “You’re greater (perfect) because you’re with me, but without me you’re just you.”
Arguably one of the best albums of the 90's. Revolutionary, inspiring for other musicians, appealing to multiple genre fans because of it's uniqueness. You can call it any kind of music you'd like, but it's FNM angel dust! One my fav bands period.
They did cover ‘Easy’, and very well, but it wasn’t on the original release of the album. I know that because I owned the Angel Dust album as a cassette tape and listened to it at least a hundred times.
Came here to say this. Can't believe this album is 30 years old. I think this is the best FNM album and one of the best albums of the 90s. Every song is something unique.
"RV" is one of the best and most underrated songs from that album, in my opinion. It's so good, and it tells a story that's potentially more clear than a lot of the other songs, in a very unique way.
RV is a favorite of mine as well, and I always saw it as a continuation of Midlife Crisis themes of alienation of love, being forgotten or taken for granted by people, getting old and bitter.
Faith No More’s greatest album. Angel Dust is a true masterpiece! I think the closest band to FNM that you’ve reviewed would be Deftones. Similarly artistic and blending artistic alternative music with some metal. Granted, Deftones are definitely a heavier band. Both offer some truly great vocalists and very interesting lyrics. Two of the best!
Mike Patton; just an incredible vocalist whom often chooses words based on sound and musical flow over meaning, which is why a lot of his lyrics are like... wtf? All the more reason to love him! When he can make them fit together lyrically... even more wow. I love Brad's reaction though, he looks confused as sh*t! 🤣 Zombie Eaters by them is a must!
Yep! Patton's remarkable voice is used like yet another instrument in the band. The musical flow trumps meaning a lot of the time, so that their lyrics often sound like abstract poetry.
They have so many great lines in their songs "and if I tighten up my hole, you may never see the light again" or "shining so bright, I dream about a cloudy sky" or pretty much any line in the verses of motherf#@ker
@@MusicMissionary well they should do the whole first album on stream and then take recommendations for anything more but trackwise my preference would be Carousel
If that scrambles your brain, try Patton's other band Mr Bungle. Travolta, Slow Growing Deaf, Carousel. Lex gets the song vibe - the melody contrasting with the aggressive rap. Yep yep. And Brad's idea about pain from a relationship. Exactly. Also lots of irony in there. Good reaction to a weird and complex track!
Angel Dust was the first Faith No More CD I ever heard in the very early '90's. Midlife Crisis is still one of my favorite songs on one of my favorite albums. I recommend listening to the whole album. It's nuts in the best way!
It's true, when this song first came out I was only hearing it on cheap radios in the office or car, etc. It wasn't until much later when I heard it on decent equipment that I realized how amazing the bass is.
Billy Gould was always so different to other metal/hard Rock bassists', he had a rounded and fuller bass sound in comparison, also did the slap bass stuff better than Flea 😜
FNM is hard to describe. Other than Brilliant and Great. They can do so many sounds perfectly. From hard rock, to hip hop, to jazz lounge. Check out Evidence.
I always loved the feel of the music……. I learned to interpret his vocals, are different for the lost feeling of having the security of naive days lost. Mid life you often go well damn now what. And if your married, are they in the same place? What do you think?
Ahhhhh never get tired of faith no more. Midlife Crisis is probably one of the biggest hits by these guys besides last cup of sorrow, epic, and stripsearch. Mike Patton is one of the most dynamic, brilliant savant composers in all of music. His 6 octave range is amazing very few singers have that range. This band never disappoints
I heard that the vocalist Mike Patton was paranoid of falling into the trappings of fame after the success of their previous album. So they made this really bizarre album where the vocals are a mix of grunts, rapping, strange noises, gutteral sounds, spoken word, and singing. Oddly enough, this album is a masterpiece of avant garde music. It's remarkable how accessible and beloved it is, given that it's so intentionally bizarre.
This was Mike's attempt of bringing a avante experimental sound to the mainstream audience. Angel dust is a good example of this. His other work with mr.bungle and fantomas is way more creative and bizarre but I feel with faith no more music he tried to mix his creative mind into the band already piano focused band. Which in my opinion paid off well. Angel dust and king are amazing. Fnm without Mike were good and with him it's just brings FNM to a whole another level of creativity.
And it was the reason Jim left/was fired/both/neither. He didn't like the shift away from guitar based songs. Ironically their next album was almost entirely guitar driven.
I'm happy because I'm no more depending on grants or loans anymore, I made a lot of profit just in tow weeks Mrs Stewart Elizabeth you are so amazing trading with her changed my life,.,
Loved the Faith No More reaction. The singer is named Mike Patton. Mike Patton is the current record holder for the widest singing range in all of recorded music. He has a range of 6 octaves. He also is the singer for over 10 bands. Besides Faith No More, he’s in Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantômas, Dead Cross, Lovage, Mondo Cane, Peeping Tom, General Patton vs X-ecutioners just to name a few… I could keep going… LOL. His many bands have many different music styles. Faith No More in and of itself has many different styles from album to album. The more you dig into his many projects it’s hard to believe it is the same guy singing for all of those bands. He is so versatile. I hope you check out more.
Finally got to the greatest band of all time!!! Not my favorite song, but one of their most stereo friendly. King For A Day, Absolute Zero, Pills For Breakfast, just to name a few to check out. This song was written about Madonna.
They were an odd alternative metal/nu metal band ('80s and '90s) Funk Metal. Rap rock. But many catchy songs and videos. Limp Bizkit, Korns big brother. RHCP's cousins. lol "Epic", "Falling to Pieces", "Last Cup of Sorrow" are some other good ones from them. FNM is solid.
According to wiki, he wrote this song about Madonna. He was tired of being bombarded by her on the TV and magazines, and thought it was desperate for attention. He wondered if she was going through something.
The song is about Mike Patrons farther and how he wanted him to be a football player. You should check out more Faith No more songs cause they have made so much different music. Also check out Devin Townsend, he is a bit like Mike Patton.
Mike Patton is one of the greatest vocalists in rock history. Few have the range he can belt out. FNM is a truly unique band, who are often overlooked, because they don’t fit neatly in a box (category).
Brad, by ONLY trying to analyze the lyrics to the extent that you are is only doing you a major disservice. Faith No More is meant to be listened to and experienced. Don't place so much emphasis on the words at the expense of FEELING the music itself.
They have many newer good songs but this one I never listen to though it's OK. Anything from KFADFFAL or AOTY would be very cool. Or do the bee gees cover for "I started a joke" That is my favorite cover of all times
You’re wasting your time figuring out the lyrics. They, like really many other bands just throw together some lines that sound cool…they focus on the music.
I dare you to react to Mike Patton's other band Mr Bungle, if you think this is a brain scramble. I love Mike Patton's vocals and he has a lot of other very interesting bands & projects.
what was that song they played all the time on the juke box these guys did, "you want it all but you can't have it" ... man that brings back memories, long time ago, I think they toured on that song...
You will find if you listen to a few Faith No More songs that they cover loads of different genre's, not a band that ever pigeon holed themselves, very varied. Ahead of their time in some respects also as when Nu-metal came along it just reminded me.of certain old FNM songs.
Mike Patton says that lyrics are secondary and the sound is more important. "It’s gotta be preverbal. I gotta just be making sounds. I gotta be, like, a second guitar player. That’s the only way that this is going to work." There are videos out there that show his range. It's really incredible.
