A viewer just informed me that this behavior is known as “PRONKING.” I’m so glad to know the proper terminology and am including it here for you, as well.
I was so psyched when I realized what my trail camera had captured. I'm only sorry the camera wasn't high enough resolution for you to clearly see the coyote in the close-up footage overlay.
Gotta say, that hoof stomp is one of my favorite deer behaviors. I've saved bunches of videos showing the stomp over the years, although I realized I probably haven't posted any of those before. Well here's one now. Better late than never?
This poor deer's ears are trembling, it's so frightened of the coyote - and rightfully so! I have been seeing a lot of injured deer coming through our property lately. Lots of does with big gashes and attack wounds. Not to mention coyotes coming through with parts of Bambi and larger does in their mouths. 😞 A coyote’s gotta eat, though. It’s just the nature of the natural world.
Upon first viewing this footage, it took me a second to see what this little deer was frightened of. When you first notice the commotion off in the distance, there’s another deer is heading up the hill on the upper left slope - it, too, was spooked by the coyote.

It also looks like the deer's tail is "puffed out", in a manner similar to cats and other animals when they feel threatened. And as far as resolution goes, I imagine it would take a very special camera to keep the foreground image in focus as well as capture a sharp image some 40 yards back. Your replay solutions are great!

Yes!! Poofy-Tail!! We had a pretty skinny-tailed cat, and it was truly amazing how big and bottlebrush it became when she was alarmed. I guess that’s partly where the “white-tail” name came from? From what folks see when the deer high-tail it out of the area after becoming alarmed. Yeah - I wish I could afford a camera set-up that was high-def on all depths of field. That sure would be something. But these do a pretty good job in a pinch.

@@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS Your cameras do a great job! And, very rewardingly, it's the strategic positioning you have achieved with your various locations, that capture an intimate yet unobtrusive window into the wild world of your environment. Wild indeed! Bears playing with rubber duckies and falling out of hammocks, dancing squirrels doing backflips --it's the stuff Walt Disney used to dream about! Sometimes, they'll engage in "pronging" as well. You'll see this frequently on Deer & Antelope in Africa. Particularly in Thompson's Gazelles! It's a signal to predators "I'm in absolute perfect heath and I'm string! Don't waste your time with me!"

Thank you! I was super excited about this one. I've always loved the deer hoof-stomp and have saved loads of videos showing that behavior. But this was the first time I saw a young deer react in this way, at least during the day time when the footage was in full-color. I did capture a night-time video of a buck running a coyote down the hill, though. That was way cool. I posted that video a while back. It's always a gift to be able to witness these interactions with the help of the trail cameras. I feel so lucky whenever something unusual (for us humans) ends up being recorded. Yay!

I could learn a thing or two from her. Or him. Can't tell. Those may be baby-antler-bumps on his head. ;-) There is a grown fawn with baby-antler-bumps who visits the tub with his Momma all of the time. He's so cute! I think he may have a neurological issue, though. Either that or this is just a common quirk. He has been like that since he was little. He doesn't do this quite as often now as he did when he was little, but he still does it - he has these weird, spazzy/freak-out episodes where he feints away, then runs around all hyper and seemingly disjointed and out of control. Maybe it's a common fawn-thing, I don't know. I haven't really seen it before. Not at this intensity, anyway. We did have a fawn many years ago who was like a budding track star. He was constantly running for the joy of running. Momma would keep up her sedate pace, while her fawn would tear pell-mell up and down the different paths and road-beds up past her and back down, past her again until he got tired of running and finally matched his pace to hers. So cute.

👍🏻💕 I’m so glad the deer got away. I wonder if their sense of smell is keen enough to detect a predator? Or is it a combo of sounds and smells and the hairs on the backs of the neck that stand up? Amazing!
@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS
@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS 3 года назад
I'm not sure, but I heard the commotion and am guessing it was the sound that tipped the deer off. The other deer it was traveling and foraging with was closer to the coyote and ran up the hill behind the deer, away from the coyote. Made a good bit of noise. In my intro text for the video, I mentioned that I've been seeing a couple does with some significant injuries - likely from coyote attacks. The deer I have seen seem to all be doing well and should recover, but it is a sobering reminder that it's a tough world out there. I'd be screaming and stomping my feet, too, if I were that deer! :-D

I'm here, and going to stand my ground. I think they both spooked each other though. We had two wolves in our back property last week, cleared the property of our nightly visitors, Bean could smell them through the walls of our old farmhouse. We kept him in all night which we do anyway, but went out with him to do his business. My heart was in my throat. They do pass on, never longer for long. But still.....
@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS
@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS 3 года назад
Oh! That's scary. But a thrill, too. With a name like Bean, I guess Bean is a little one, eh? Even full-grown dogs can succumb to coyotes if they are determined enough. It's a scary world out there. I'll never forget when our doggies took off into the woods (back when we let them roam off-leash) and came back out playing with coyote pups, just like they were other doggies at the dog park. Didn't last long, but it was quite a sight. We thought it was cute until we heard it can be a ploy of the pack to send out younger pups to lure dogs. I don't know if that's true or not, but that was around the time we very rarely let our dogs off-leash. We were having more and more run-ins with wildlife up at our last mountain - we had to be careful for their sake. Hope Bean stays safe.
@sandrabehrle-liebsher4805
@sandrabehrle-liebsher4805 3 года назад
@@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS Yes actually that is true about luring your pup's into their packs, as I have been told from several people. Bean is a Basset, and he will let the world know he is here, but having those two wolves this close is kind of almost unheard of, we live and are completely surrounded by woods, we have six acres, lakes abound here in N. Wisconsin, our national forest is just up the road, and that I will believe is where they ventured from. But then it is not uncommon, why wouldn't they come this way then? Dunno....I think they just wanted Bean to come out and play, lol! You too be safe guys!

Love their attitudes! This fall has been the most plentiful I’ve seen the deer since moving to this mountain 7 (or 8?) years ago. Hopefully they won’t get toooo comfortable and eat up all my plants next spring and summer. We don’t have our dear Chloe-dog anymore to readily warn off the deer. Our remaining Samson doggy is curious but doesn’t do much in the way of barking unless he knows it’s meal-time. Ha Ha. I don’t mind sacrificing a little landscaping to the critters - comes with the territory - but one of those dang bucks did his marking-on-the-tree-branches routine last week and he snapped one of my favorite weeping blue spruces right in two. Off with the leader’s head. Sigh. The spruce was already more than a bit bedraggled after being assaulted by The Other Darryl cub last spring, so I suppose that tree was probably on its last legs, anyway. I guess I’m going to have to start planting more amorphous shrubbery instead.
@daveallentown6868
@daveallentown6868 3 года назад
@@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS I am sorry to hear of Chloe passing on. In the 90s I read of an international survey of veterinarians asking this question: do dogs have souls? In most of the world few vets said they did. In the U.S. the number was a bit higher. In Japan almost half the veterinarians answered "yes." The Japanese are on to something.

I’m learning every day here! I knew about their sounds, which the males seem to make the most - to me it resembles the sound of branches and dead wood scraping together above the forest floor. I forgot the technical term for it. It’s almost like a sheep’s bleat. I used to the know the name for that sound but promptly forgot. Will have to look it up again. I didn’t realize that deer screamed, though! I can’t remember when I first learned about the hoof stomp, but I love seeing that emphatic movement. I got one video last week with a male standing right up against the camera and making that bleating (dead-wood) sound in a prolonged fashion. I’m afraid this buck may have had one of the more horrible diseases white tail deer can die from (EHD?) as he appeared to be slobbering - so I’m not sure how much of his ‘moaning’ was due to his being in rut, and how much of it was due to his being in distress. At any rate, I’ll definitely be including it in an upcoming video about “Bucks n Does: the boys in a rut.”

I give thanks to the divine god creator of all things good, who allows you to make beautiful filmed documents, the image and the perspective of view are perfect, moreover your actor the deer is spectacular, he captivates the attention, the coyote is fast and stealthy however it appears clearly, the fallow deer gives the alert and stands up against the intruder, it shows well its determination and its courage despite the danger,
