YAWA QUESTION: Thank-you for this amazing channel! Most valuable dog training resource I have found as we prepare to bring home our first dog, a lab, in 6 weeks. We have four kids age 10yrs-10months, so naturally there is always some fallen food on the floor. How do I teach a puppy, not to eat food off the floor? Or does it matter? Part of me would love the dog to clean up the scraps off the floor, but I also realize that this could be a bad habit that could lead to other issues.

Picking up my first GSP in about 4 weeks. Ive had advice to start using whoa where you would maybe tell another puppy stay. (Before a meal, before going out a door, etc) is that a good idea or should it be strictly bird work???

yawa question: 7 month old picardy spaniel, hasnt got the hang of pointing birds yet, mostly chases after them and flushes them. i want to start whoa training but have a couple questions, first i have a habbit of saying *No* when he does something hes not supposed to and wondering if whoa sounds to much like no. secondly he already understands the stay command very well which he usualy does sitting, should i keep the stay command and work on having him stay standing up or use whoa as a completely different command ? thanks !

Interesting gun belt. What is the make and model?

Is it okay to teach a 8 week puppy to sit? I have heard that it could cause problems for Whoa training later and the sit command should be taught after whoa command.

Questions, observations, opinion I was at a Rick Smith advanced seminar and I was saying whoe to keep my dog steady. His question to me was why am I saying whoe if he is not moving. His suggestion was to only say whoe if he moved. I found this to help my dog understand whoe much better. This was a more advanced dog so I guess it could change as the dog advances. Wondering what your opinion is?

That’s the difference between conditioning the behavior first (negative reinforcement) and then correcting (positive punishment) once the behavior is learned.

My cousin is trying to train a lab puppy to hunt quail and pheasant. He lives in a neighborhood and can’t get out to a field much. She is currently 4 months old. He has gotten her used to the sound of a cap gun, and working on fetch outside now. He is now trying to train woah. I have only worked with English Setters, pointers, and German Shorthairs, so I’m not sure how training a lab would be different. Any advice?

I think labs are considered more flushers than pointers but doesn't mean you can't train it. Just won't come as naturally as for a pointer.

@@joem4551 Yeah, I think that will be the best. I have never seen a lab that will actually point before, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I told him to just train her like a pointer, and see what happens. Thanks.

I'm trying to understand this dog's search. Why does it take 3 steps and then stop and look back at you? Is this just the way the dog is? Is this a result of training? Is she too dependent or would you expect her independence to increase with experience and age from this point?

maybe worried about the 'correction' , those collars take their tolls on a dogs independence. And Setters were originally bred to be setting dogs, not Pointing dogs. They crept, crept, and crept closer to the bird in a creeping position (like any predator) , the hunter would give a 'hold' signal and come as close as possible and give the flush command ( or flush it him self if the dog was really seasoned ). But the dog should hold steady to wing and shot. Breeding is everything; a good gun dog doesn't need to be 'buzzed' into a hunting companion.
