I install a whole home humidifier for the hvac system. It isn't finished yet, but is useable for now until I change out the couple things I need to do.

Thank you for drawing attention to the saddle valve. Plumbing is something I'm fairly ignorant about and I'd have happily punched a hole in my PEX. Instead I went to my local big box and picked up a pinch clamp tool, a 1-1-1/2" t, pinch rings, and a 1/2-1/4" sharkbite all for about $100. My neighbor paid like $800 for a "professional" installation. Now I have the tools and confidence for future plumbing projects. It's all possible thanks to DIY RU-vidrs like you.

Thank you so much! After looking at the instructions for the little control unit I was feeling a little overwhelmed. I didn't want to put a hole in my house for the temperature sensor and I have no idea how to wire up that transformer it came with. Using a smart thermostat to control the humidifier is a much better system.

Great DIY install. Be sure to get it installed as level as possible or the unit will leak, The supply tray will leak if its not level for the most part. Use add a line valve and toss the saddle valve(you will thank me later)

I like using that 1/4” vinyl hose for the water feed. Only thing you need to do for the saddle/ piercing valve is swap the brass sleeve for a nylon one

A saddle valve (piercing ?) a horizontal pipe will clog w sediment in a year.If you must use a horizontal run...drill a 1/4 in. hole in the side of the pipe.Humidifier should be on the return to by-pass.

Thank you for the Video. can you clarify something for me. in my scenario the solenoid valve is supplied 24V DC so i would need to hook up to the HSA 044 AC to DC converter? Secondly one of my wires going to my current humidistat(which i want to replace with my ecobee5C) is originating from the main furnace control board(white multiwire connector) then to the lowfirePS1 switch of my goodman furnace. I believe this is so the humidistat wont switch unless it gets power from the furnace which will only happen when it is on lowfire. Does the ecobee take this into account ie ecobee knows when the fan is running so will only send signal from acc+ when humidity is needed AND when fan is on? Thank you

Mounting it on the return side will keep water from running down into the electric in your furnace if there should ever be a failure. It isn't something I thought about when I installed this one, but if I did it over I would change that.

Curious to know where you got your info to have the ecobee control the humidifier. I'm looking to install one of these and I like the idea of the ecobee controlling it.
@sleepersftw
@sleepersftw 3 года назад
support.ecobee.com/hc/en-us/articles/360023859852-Troubleshooting-accessory-installations So what they are saying is if you want to use your existing transformer (power the humidifier directly from the thermostat) you use the 1 wire method and just connect to the acc+. If you have an external power supply for your humidifier, then you use the 2 wire method and the thermostat just acts as a relay to turn it on and off. Once the wires are connected just follow the steps for setup on your ecobee. I personally leave it in manual mode and adjust the humidity set point as needed. The biggest benefit to setting it through the ecobee is not needing to mount an additional control device somewhere.

Normally I would be ok using a hole saw, or a uni-bit to start a hole for my tin snips, but I can't help but feel like all those metal shavings falling down into the heat exchanger in that location are a bad thing. You seem to understand this when you said you'd have to fish out the drop from your hole saw. Use a hammer and a screwdriver to start your hole. Also, I'm watching your video because while I'm familiar with HVAC duct work, I don't know how to install a humidifier. The first video I watched wasn't very good, but they made a good point. They didn't want to put the humidifier directly above the furnace in the plenum because water is going to hit the top of that supply and want to run back down into the heat exchanger. You did exactly what they said not to do. Thoughts? You're going to have a hard time "leveling" your humidifer when you're attaching to a point in the duct with a cross break. That "humidifer pad" is obviously a filter of some type, but I can see other video suggestions on the right hand side of the youtube page calling them a pad as well for some reason. I don't understand why the return is tied into it. I'm not saying you're wrong. I assume you're following the directions. I just wish I knew the explanation. Why would you want unfiltered air going back into the humidifier. That explains the filter in the humidifier though, but I wonder how much Aprilaire charges for replacements, or who thinks to change them. The other video I watched previously didn't show a tie-in to the return duct. Those "hole cutters" are close to $80. Again, use snips. And unfortunately you lost me on the electrical install, so I didn't bother with the rest of the video.
@sleepersftw
@sleepersftw Год назад
That's a good point about the shavings. Anything that can be done to minimize them is a good idea. As for placement and the duct from the humidifier to the return as well as filter vs pad. This is a bypass humidifier so this requires positive air pressure from the supply to pass through the humidifier pad and then flow into the lower pressure of the return carrying that moisture it picked up from the humidifier pad with it. It could be also be mounted on the return with a duct coming from the supply to it which would be a safer install in the event there was ever a failure that allowed water to overflow into the ductwork. The humidifier you saw that didn't have this additional duct would be a type of powered humidifier that doesn't use the systems air flow to travel through the humidifier.

I won't say it is impossible, but I wouldn't recommend it. To take it off and change it, the water up to that point needs to be off anyway so I would recommend installing a tee and a proper valve.

Once you have it connected, you set it up through the thermostat as a humidifier and it only turns it on when the blower is running and it senses the need for it.
