Which are a better value? Whole pecans? Shelled pecans? This may surprise you! I was sitting around nursing a cold and decided make some use of the down time with this video. It turned out to be kind of interesting!
It is fun to shell your own pecans. It makes you appreciate the goodness of the fresh pecans. I am going to have to challenge you to a shelling contest. I think I got my entire 5 lb. bag done in the time it took you to get the 1 lb done. They are already cracked by the farmer, so you just have to separate them. Yes, I am the friend he met at the stand buying the whole pecans! Great video, Ray.
Cracked would certainly be faster to shell! I will admit to being pretty slow and also took more time to make sure I got all the little pieces of meat out of the shell. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I'm with you, Ray. Last week I finished eating a handful of cracked pecans. They were all that remained from the pound I bought at the farm stand last year. I am seldom able to extract the pecan meat whole. I end up with pieces. Not ideal. I invariably end up with a piece or two of the shell mixed in with the pecan meat. Chewing a small piece of shell takes all the enjoyment out of eating the pecans. I will pay the premium for shelled pecan halfs. They aren't broken. They're easier to eat. I worry less about breaking a molar when eating them.
Is there any advantage/disadvantage to keeping the pecan in the shell? Then crack out of the shell as needed Pecans are a favorite for me as they are kidney friendly.
That’s a great question so I looked it up. According to Rattlesnake Ranch pecan farm, pecans in the shell will last 4 months at room temperature. Shelled will last 3 months. Refrigerated in the shell will last for 9-18 months while shelled will only last 6 months. If frozen, both will last about two years. I always freeze mine and they’re gone by the end of the year.
