Week nine! I'm a ay late on this update due to technical issues, but here it is! I decided to do another ballad this week because it's something I really need to practice. I think I did better this week than last but there are still some hesitations here and there. Also I've started experimenting with adding extra notes in chords for a splash of color. I'll continue doing that in the future!

So, I wanted to update real quick to say that I'm still alive and still playing! Basically to make these videos I had to completely change my entire setup: I had to move the instrument across the room so that I could balance my tablet on top of a high shelf, record the video on that and the audio on my desktop in my DAW, then transfer the video file over and try to sync up the video and audio, crop it, all that nonsense; it was a huge all-day affair that ended up burning me out. I recently bought a nice webcam and an overhead desk clamp mount (currently en route from amazon) which will, hopefully, allow me to do all of the recording from a single location without having to rearrange my entire setup every time I want to record. I'm thinking I'm probably not going to be doing weekly tunes again BUT I will start uploading more in the near future! Sorry for the radio silence!

Hey man, I' ve been listening to this on repeat, the harmony and this sound of the piano are addictive. Is it your composition? What piano sound are you using? I don't think it's GarageBand cause I played around with it yesterday and it seemed different. Will you upload some more, at least one per year ? 😋 Cheers

might be able to with pianoteq, but this instrument is a synthesizer so the sounds are coming from the keyboard (not midi)

@@seemsfamiliar He said in another video of his (at the description) that he was using GarageBand because he did not like the keyboard's built in sound that much.

Wait, is this its own unique instrument? I assumed it was a Korg Karma with a Janko keyboard affixed.
@georgeparkins777
@georgeparkins777 6 месяцев назад
No, you were right, although it was a Korg N5, but it is a professional conversion that is rebadged and sold as the Wholetone Revolution. I'm really wishing I could justify 1000 dollars for a used one

Hey! I'm doing a video on the Korg N5/N1 synthesizers and want to talk briefly about the Wholetone Revolution since it's based on the Korg N1. Would it be alright if I used your video in mine given that you're fully credited both in the video and description? I know fair use covers stuff like this, but I like to ask wherever possible. Thanks!

Lovely, nice to watch your progress. You're ahead of me. Any reason you don't tend to use your thumb on the left?
@wholesteps9536
@wholesteps9536 6 лет назад
Thanks! I really should be using my left thumb for stuff, but it still feels awkward for me. The thumb can't really play anything above the first two rows, and I guess my brain doesn't want to make that calculation on the fly--making sure that my other fingers are above second line in order to avoid having to twist my hand uncomfortably. The only reason I'm using my right thumb is because I actually sit down and work out the fingerings for each chord I'm using. The plan for next week is going to include a lot more complex spread voicings so I'm gonna have to up my thumb game this week!

Wholesteps : Yeah, that's relatable. I've just started with locating octaves across the board with the left thumb and pinky. I think once the brain realises that finger-to-finger intervals and thumb-to-finger intervals are equivalent ("isomorphic") I will feel fluent and not like I'm translating between them.
@wholesteps9536
@wholesteps9536 6 лет назад
When you are playing octaves in the left, do you place your pinky on the same row as the thumb, or displaced two rows up? Same row seems like it's easier to muscle memory it out coming from piano, but I feel like moving the pinky to 3rd or 4th row is better ergonomically. Interested in hearing your opinion!

Wholesteps: I always play on seperate rows, so the wrist is fairly straight. I am starting to grasp it, but I am coming from guitar which might make that transition faster. I've started to think of the chromatic scale as having two families of notes, odds and evens. Major third is an even, fifth is an odd, etc. If I can keep my orientation about which of those I'm playing, it doesn't matter so much if the fingering is spread out vertically
@ericoschmitt
@ericoschmitt 6 лет назад
Odds and evens! love it. Lets then start thinking about chromatic intervals in base 12 (where 10 means a dozen), and ten and eleven are X and Y or A and B? That's what I'm planning for myself at least!

I'm good! I still plan on continuing to make videos, it's just that every week I had to rearrange my entire room to put the instrument next to my lofted bed and balance my tablet above it to record video.. once I manage to save up enough money for a good DSLR or something to make the whole process a million percent easier I'll start posting videos again!

Please don't stop posting videos! Please post each in more than one key, at least transposed by a tritone! And throw away the stickers, Wataru Ohkawa has stopped commenting your videos since then, maybe he didn't like it? hahahahaha

What is the appeal of this layout? Is it just for the looks?
@richardharris9708
@richardharris9708 7 месяцев назад
Main advantage is chord and scales have the same shape regardless of key. It is easy to play octaves or higher with small hands, and glissandos between notes.
