Whoopi's reviews were mixed-to-harsh that year (Entertainment Weekly called her performance "assiduously self-congratulatory and determinedly lame") but looking back, she really is one of the better Oscar hosts. Even when some jokes don't land, she maintains a certain magnetic warmth .
I think watching all of these Oscar Monologues is kind of like opening a time capsule and seeing the Variety magazines seeing which movies were popular! Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Steve Martin, Chris Rock and even David Letterman were funny doing these in their own ways.
I think she’s great! I didn’t watch that year. I was in high school and distinctly remember having a fight that night with my bf. Lol. Too bad I missed it. She’s killing, in my opinion.
i love Whoopi but I personally think all her Oscar openings are average and not much different compared to what we get nowadays. A few political jokes, roasting a few nominees. Some jokes land, some don't. All pretty standard. I think nostalgia plays a huge role when people claim the Oscars and its hosting used to be sooo much better.
As a child who grew up being conditioned a black woman's hair had to be permed, braided and straightened to be "pretty" + makeup, and how u wud be called a Whoopi Goldberg if u were "ugly", as an adult im only realising just how gorgeous she was, literally took my breath away

Nice to see this again saw it the very night it was on entering nearly two years back in the US and Whoopi was on the mark as usual . Excellent . Thank you for having a YT channel so can enjoy ceremonies we have seen and not seen be it before out time in my case yes .

I like to binge watch all the Whoopi and crystal and Steve Martin monologues. I ended up watching all the 1991 oscars. I really enjoy a lot of them. However, i ended up seeing Reversal of Fortune which I hadn’t seen and then watched Irons acceptance speech for it and thats how i went ahead and saw all the program. I recall the real Van Bulow case and really enjoyed that movie. He was very thoughtful of the real people in his speech and that impressed me.😊

Best Oscar host ever? Johnny Carson, followed by Bob Hope. In their absence, Billy Crystal and Whoopi filled the gap. But Hollywood hasn't bred a caliber-comedian who can carry the load for almost two decades. So, we have crappy Oscar ceremonies nobody's watching anymore. They've stripped Oscar of all that used to make it a grand show. And criticisms be damned. Whoopi's monologue here is funny as hell.
