This is the one that has "stood the test of time." The very first Starrcade from Thanksgiving night 1983. It was before WrestleMania and became the flagship event of Jim Crockett Promotions and then WCW. It was not a Pay Per View event but was broadcast via closed circuit to many arenas in the then Mid-Atlantic area.
Ric Flair vs Harley Race was the featured event, but the event had so much more. Including Roddy Piper and Greg Valentine in a Dog Collar Match; Gordon Solie and Bob Caudle on commentary, Abdullah the Butcher, Ricky Steamboat, the Brisco Brothers, Wahoo McDaniel; and then somewhere backstage a young, green Tony Schiavone.
It was also the beginning of the run by Dusty Rhodes as booker of Jim Crockett Promotions.
You like blood? You like realism? You like vintage pro wrestling? Then, you'll LOVE Starrcade '83

Okay I'ma say it. Bischoff's show is like science class, Prichard's is like history class and Tony's is like recess. Love all 3 but Tony's is like a hangout & chill.

I want to hear Starrcade '85!! The birth of hardcore wrestling in my opinion.
@JuliusC1973
@JuliusC1973 Год назад
I'd have to disagree with that one. What was happening in Memphis, Detroit and Puerto Rico was wilder than anything Starcade 1985 was doing.

As bad as Starrcade '91? Conrad is nuts.

I became a fan of the Jim crockett productions thanks to Tony and Conrad. I grew up a wrestling fan in the Monday night wars. This was a nice journey as Tony revealed his first major show. Although, the problem I had was there were major timing issues. This was a 2 1/2 hr ppv they stretched to 3 hrs. although i rated this show a 9 out of 10.

I disagree with Conrad about the quality of this show, unless he is being sarcastic. Many great matches here and the ethos of the event is exciting and feels like something big, especially for 1983 - groundbreaking. Piper and the Hammer is excellent. Abdullah and Colon is classic. Flair and Race is textbook, though they had better matches. Putting this show in context, it should be given more credit. Thanks Tony!

I agree because I'm old enough to have seen early days of Wrestling and if you look at this show in context of Wrestling back then it provided several different kinds of matches..This Crockett show booked by Dusty was History making in a way and to sit in studio and pick matches apart seems short sighted...

For your information Conrad, fans like the old NWA stocks of the 80s. I would go so far as to say that it is better than the ECW that I have always hated. It would be interesting if you stop constantly criticizing the content of these old matchs that are classics. There are other things in life that the WWF of the 90s ...
@bpatrickhoburg
@bpatrickhoburg 5 лет назад
sylvain316 yeah well said. I love early and mid 80s wrestling. I wasn’t even alive in ‘83, but it seems undeniable that these matches are classic and called in the ring. I like ECW but it is difficult to compare you know? You don’t need high flying spots to have a good match - like Tony says, it is about the story you tell in the ring, ala Jake Roberts for example. Flair and Race were gold story tellers. Sabu and RVD were decent tellers but it was more about the spots. The Dudleys were decent tellers too but again it was more about the spots. I for one appreciate the longer drawn out wrestling bouts like the ‘83 main event, like Piper and Valentine. Wrestling used to be a real sport, not entertainment - no offense to the current product, but man, this event beats any current PPV.

Connrad blows!!! I thought his stuff was good at first until I listened to a few podcasts and then after I was defending him on Twitter and he sent me a very obnoxious message for my thanks. He's a fat pig in reality , just look it up. Thinks he's wrestling royalty since he married the "other" Flair daughter.

Sad to say, but I think Conrad is totally burned out on doing watchalong shows and really phones them in now. More than half the matches on any recent watchalong, he pretty much taps out and just falls back on shtick with Tony and doing the same few jokes he always does, at the expense of discussing anything remotely to do with the matches we're watching. I mean, I get going off on a tangent if Assassin #2 is working a five minute headlock, but when Conrad's talking over *the finish of Piper vs. Valentine* to ask Tony questions about David Arquette, he clearly doesn't give a crap about the show they're doing, regardless of the quality of whatever match is currently on. If even iconic all-time matches like Piper/Valentine can't hold his attention for a watchalong anymore, what possibly could?

Rufus R. Jones died of a heart attack hunting just about 30 minutes away from I live in Missouri. I get what Conrad is saying about the show not being that great. The first half is pretty boring. Except for Jimmy Valiant, he was the shit. But the last 3 matches made up for the first half in my opinion.

Hahaha I like how they only like the last 3 matches because when I was a kid we had a bootleg VHS of this and I was like the only thing worth watching were the last 3 matches. I'd tell everyone who'd borrow it or dub it anything other than the last 3 matches is a waste of time

Would it be a ridiculous thing to ask Tony to cover of his favorite times? This was a great show. How acceptable is this?

Not joking, pretty sure Tony has a serious not hetero man crush on Ricky Steamboat even more than Mister Z. He keeps constantly circling back to how good he looks. Not judging, just think Tony could learn a lot about himself listening to his the show's playback.

Schiavone makes me sick the way he roll his eyes because Prichard won't get into the blade job thing but I admire any old school wrestlers that has enough respect for business that they shy away from that... Shiavone who never was in a ring and stood there with blood in his eyes and being in that position to watch this video explaining something he wouldn't have guts to do pisses me off...Maybe if Sullivan helped Schiavone get color he wouldn't be so quick to discuss the blade😠
