What Happened When with Tony Schiavone

By the results of the Wrestling Observer Readers' Poll, this was the one of the worst WCW Pay Per Views of all time. It began with Ricky Steamboat against Lord Steven Regal, and with the exception of Ric Flair against Rick Rude and a Cactus Jack against Yoshi Kwan match, it had such duds as Ice Train, Charlie Norris, the Equalizer, Big Sky and a War Games highlighted by the Shockmaster and Road Warrior Animal not getting in the ring. Sheesh!! Maybe a few "Tony Reads Rap" interludes will help matters out. Get ready for Fall Brawl 1993! Why is there a line for Ted DiBiase and Jimmy Hart at events? Here's an idea: they are among the coolest SOBs walking this planet.

Sean Royal retired in 87, going into construction. He came back in 93 in New Japan and did indys until 2002 (ironically). What he's been doing since is a mystery.

The Different Times statement only annoys me because it doesn't actually mean anything. Like what's offensive now vs. what was offensive then is solely based on sociopolitical leanings & indoctrination, not the times or what the calendar now reads. Back in the early 90s you could call out someone's homosexuality and it wasn't offensive like it is now, but in 2019 we have a vulgar stripper rapper named Cardi B and Kim K who got famous off a sex tape being female role models for young girls today. That wouldn't have happened in the early 90s but it's totally acceptable now. So what's offensive is by choice.

The fact that Tony doesn’t rap anymore makes me hate AEW. I hate it because I imagine that’s why he isn’t rapping anymore, yet it was his rapping and overall irreverence that made us originally fall in love with him again. We WHW listeners are the REAL Schiavone OGs! Rap again!

Shame about the Rude-Flair match. That could have been a classic if Rude was at his peak fitness. Still thought it was decent but overlong. Enjoyed the build for the match at least. I'd probably say the opening match was the best. This card really sucked though. Always enjoy re-watching it though for Jesse and Tony's commentary.

They should've spend more time talking about Flair vs Rude which in my opinion was a very good match probably Rude's best match

I gave this show a 6/10. I was glad Tony and Conrad did this one. It makes the podcast better. Flair and Rude was a great match. Meltzer was nuts with his thoughts. Not everything sucked. I thought the first wargames was a popcorn fart. Wonder if they lost time due to the NWA World Heavyweight Championship being 30 minutes. I think wargames should go at least 25 maybe 30 minutes.

Cactus only had like 2 matches in FMW in his career. The death match with W*ING Kanemura on 5/5/96 & the 6 man tag with Funk & The Gladiator vs. Kanemura, Masato Tanaka, & Atsushi Onita from 4/29/97. Conrad must be thinking about his IWA Japan run.

Ted DiBiase retired in 1993 - that might have played into the decision making. I can't believe they actually discussed going with Road Warrior Hawk. Besides being a somewhat bland tag team wrestler he was hardly reliable.
@dalynsanders
@dalynsanders 5 лет назад
Yeah they probably had those thoughts with him as an option. Him being Hawk. Probably hoping to get at best a short but hopefully sweet moment. Most likely it would have been super hyped and not much to build upon. Funk probably would have been the best choice

The NWA had next to no active member promotions in 1993. After the exodus of WCW and New Japan, there was just Dennis Coralluzzo and "NWA " Eastern Championship Wrestling representing it on a much smaller scale. So, the list of credible wrestlers that could potentially carry the NWA title was very short. The funny part was a couple of months after this. Road Warrior Hawk was challenging Rick Rude on a Clash of the Champions for the not the NWA World Title.

Even being politically correct... Wrestling wise... Mick Foley is a top-10 for sure. Passion & longevity. He had more to offer than that. But he exuded those two qualities. You don't see that from a lot of top people for a long period of time
