THIS VIDEO! 💥
In 2019 the Toronto Raptors took down the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals. As an NBA superstar Giannis had his worst playoff series of his career against the 1-2-2 zone defense scheme that Nick Nurse had the Raptors running. Also known as, the wall. The wall shut down Giannis and the Bucks offense, and played the biggest role in the Raptors winning the series. Kawhi Leonard did a great job being the primary defender and he got help from other good defenders all over the court. However there's a few reasons this scheme wouldn't be effective in 2021 against the Finals MVP. In this video I explain why the scheme doesn't work anymore and what exactly it was the Raptors took advantage of. Which are things that couldn't be exploited against this 2021 Bucks team.

A pass can only be great if whoever you give the ball to can get the bucket, for the person to get the bucket he has to be open. In 2019 eastern conference final, Raptors didn’t leave anybody open, it was not a wall, it was 4 walls, a box. Giannis will not pass if any of the guys are not open, but in this final Suns left players open on the floor, that gave Giannis the opportunity to show off his passing ability. Between two equally good team, better defense team always wins. In conclusion, the Suns are disappointing.

This is exactly right. The reason they struggled so much against Toronto had most to do with exactly this. The Bucks perimeter shooters couldn't make a shot to save their lives in that series. Bledsoe was a mess. And Giannis was on an island. Like you said, he's also developed as a player and a passer. Also, Kawhi was on fire and VanVleet had new baby super powers and was knocking down everything he touched from three. The whole "build the wall" thing requires everything to be just right. It's like in football, if you know a team cannot pass at all you can stack the box against the run. If you know a team cannot shoot a perimeter shot, you can stack the key.

I'm loving his improvement on his post scoring repertoire, he doesn't need the threes, he played more like a power forward he is this year compared to doing downhill small forward kind of plays in his previous years He sets screen, catching lobs more and getting entry passes under the rim because really, I don't think anybody else in the league now can raise up and just dunk the ball six feet from the rim. @@javierlandaverde4108 He might not be Damian Lillard or Steph Curry offensively but on defense he's better than both of them combined and you need to throw in more players to reach Jrue's greatness on defense... and honestly, I would take a guy that can give me around 20-25 points most games while being the best perimeter defender in the league over any guard other than Steph Curry... cause I like Steph way more than Dame cause he has a higher basketball IQ... people underrate defenders all the time man... Holiday is invaluable... the guy makes the life of anyone he guards a living hell.. he knows every little underhanded trick in the book to push, shove, hand check and do all he needs to slow the offensive player without fouling... I can even say that the Bucks with Dame in the place of Jrue would have lost cause they would have nobody stopping the huge threats like CP3 and Book... people forget that CP3 had 13 turnovers in the whole playoffs before the finals and he had over 20 in the Finals alone... that's how good Jrue is... the guy made the PG with the best Assist-turnover ratio in the history of the NBA commit as many turnovers a game as the worst (aka Russel Westbrook)... just think about how insane that is...

Thank you for bigging upn my Raptors in the beginning ! That 2019 Raptors team doesn't get enough credit defensively. It's a defense that slowed down Joel Embiid, Giannis and Curry all in the same post-season. I'd argue that Raptor team was a top 5 defensive team in NBA playoff history, when you consider the personnel and who they faced in the 2nd round, ECF and Finals.

Great video! As a Bucks fan this video perfectly showed my frustration with this team the last few years. Just ran into this video on my feed and gotta say, really good analysis. I've been a huge fan of Giannis for a while and it's been so amazing seeing him develop throughout the years. Even in his early days in the league, there were flashes of the kind of player he would become. Seeing him dominate the way he does now is crazy especially considering how much room he has to grow, like his midrange jumpshot and his defense for example. If his jumper becomes consistent he will be that much more dominant and unpredictable, and on top of that I can't think of a big with the defensive ceiling he has. He has the potential to guard smaller guys really well when other players his size and position can't. Anyway, thanks for the insightful content! Def subscribing :)
@WillSoTrill
@WillSoTrill 2 года назад
His defense really is amazing. He’d go from guarding CP3 on one possession forcing a miss, and next possession he’d protect the rim against Ayton! We talk about guys who can guard 1-5 and he did it against players who are top 5-10 at their positions in the Finals. Also I appreciate you subscribing!

Well put together. Couple of quick takes, Jrue is a solid 2 way player that puts pressure on the opposing offense. Bledsoe was an overpay by the Bucks. 2nd, Jrue and Khris were ball handlers, and not Giannis trying to beat the offense via dribble penetration or shooting over the defense.
@WillSoTrill
@WillSoTrill 2 года назад
Jrue was crucial in this run! So much great defense in every single series, even when he had bad shooting games he still brought value. And that’s true as well, they ran Giannis top of key ISO way less than 2019. I never liked it so it was good to see some PnR with Giannis as the roller.

Has very little to do with him having other play makers. The only reason the wall worked in the first place was because of the BUCKS insistence on making him attack from the wing/perimeter be it as a scorer or facilitator. It was because they were trying to make him into Lebron James or Kevin Durant as opposed to David Robinson 2.0. NBA basketball has been played inside out for decades for a reason. If you have a dominate 7' and you throw him the ball in the post it forces the defense to show you what they are going to do. It actually brings the defensive 3 second call back into play as you can´t just be hanging out in the paint not guarding anyone. The Bucks actually wasted 2 or 3 years of his development with the Giannis 3 point shooting experiment. That time and resources should have been used on helping him develop a 13 to 15 foot turn around jump shot. This summer their minds need to be on Texas. Hakeem, David, Tim, Dirk. Giannis is so flexible in his skill set that they can take things all three of those teams did for those 4 guys and incorporate them into their offense to tilt the deck for him. When you have a guy who can be dominate inside you can get away from the space and pace trend and get back to bully ball.
@WillSoTrill
@WillSoTrill 2 года назад
I absolutely agree with this! I remember watching the Raptors series and it was so frustrating seeing them try to run Giannis top of key ISO’s. They still even run it occasionally now but it’s so much less, and even when it was ran this season it was more effective with the better team. Also emphasis on working with Hakeem! Giannis with a post game like that would be unreal

The thing that really came through this year was that because of his passing and semi consistent mid range abilities, giannis doesn’t need a three cause there’s usually four guys on the court with him who all have one. That being said... FREE THROWS. Gotta do better next year. Way too many games during season were lost or way too close, all because of missed throws by Giannis
@WillSoTrill
@WillSoTrill 2 года назад
Yeah the three point shot won’t be needed as long as his teammates surrounding him have that. Free throws are crucial, blocking out the noise of the opposing crowds is a big thing. At home he shot well in the playoffs (for the most part) but that count was messing with him lol
@adamseidel8901
@adamseidel8901 2 года назад
While winning at home was INCREDIBLE, it woulda been an absolute trip if Giannis would’ve gone 17-19 away. Next years success rides on bucks keeping Portis (which sadly doesn’t seem likely) and Tucker. Heart and soul guys keep the ship up right.
@WillSoTrill
@WillSoTrill 2 года назад
What makes you say that about Portis? I thought for sure he’d be brought back
@adamseidel8901
@adamseidel8901 2 года назад
You’d think Portis staying would be a no brainer as he thrived on the team and the city embraced him. But rumor is he’s going to turn down the 3.8 million dollar option for his second year and hit the market to cash in on his success. I think due to cap space bucks could only offer him 5.8, and he’ll likely get a 30-50 mil contract somewhere else. My figures could be off but I believe this is the idea. I guess Portis also recently tweeted that the greatest struggle in life is the battle between your heart and your head. I read that as - do you stay where you’re loved or do you make the smart business move and get paid? We shall see. But I’d LOVE him to stay.
