I feel so fortunate to have seen to Rev play live with A7X. I think I was 15 years old?Probably the most epic show I’ve ever been to. There was no human like Jimmy. I remember being a little kid, at their shows, and Jimmy was always so kind. It felt like running into an old friend. I was a teenager when he passed, still remember where I was the moment I found out. My mom had called me at like 6AM EST and said she’d just heard on the radio there’s a rumor going around he passed. I was in denial until it became confirmed. It SHOOK me. I MOURNED for him. Me and my friends and even my parents who had grown to love him mourned for him. I still do, and srill keep the mementos of his, the guitar picks, the drumsticks, the sticky passes he’d give me after shows.. he was a great guy. He’d stand there, beer in hand, chatting with you for a solid 5-10 minutes plus. Incredible drummer, incredible human.

Sidewinder is a drum clinic and overall, imo, a n underrated masterpiece. The word “sidewinder” is literally personified in the lead parts, lyrics, and drum sections that emulate the feeling of a snake through patterns and notes. The whole “City of Evil” is honestly full of the Revs greatness. Everyone is familiar with the drum solo from the beast and the harlot and the blistering fills in the solo section of bat country…but there are fills (IE the wicked end, blinded in chains) that are just completely out of this world.

LOVED this video, Gabe! It warms my heart to see Jimmy still getting some recognition to this day. His legacy as a musician continues to inspire me and he was the main reason I fell in love with the drums! Thank you so much for making this video!! A few years ago I actually made a little tribute to The Rev. I took the isolated drums from the album version of the song "Almost Easy" and comp'd them to match what Jimmy played in an outtake video the band posted a few years ago. The original video was camera audio so it was quite challenging to make and I did have to use some isolated drum parts from other songs off the self-titled album to help recreate certain parts that did not end up on the final version of the song. Sort of turned out like a drum playthrough/ alternate drum take of the song. It's probably one of the closest things to a "studio drum playthrough" we'll ever get of Jimmy. I hope fans of The Rev and Avenged dig it! I'll share the link in case anyone wants to check it out 🙏 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MwibzYAoN1Y.html

Perfect articulation of Jimmy’s genius! I remember as a metal head kid obsessed with A7X, I saw an interview where he talked about how he listened to so much more than metal, citing some hip-hop, funk, and jazz influences. It opened my “metal over everything” mindset to realize how different styles of drumming can be incorporated into any genre to create something truly unique and inspiring, something Jimmy clearly figured out. Rest In Peace Reverend Tholomew Plague!🤘🏼

The Rev surely was the mad alchemist in A7X. His drumming was real creative and solid for sure, but what makes him a genius musician IMO is his proficiency and creativity with other instruments and also amazing vocal parts. I mean, A Little Piece Of Heaven is an absolute masterpiece with no small thanks to him. Natural Born Killer (and the whole Nightmare album) was recorded by Portnoy and Im pretty sure that Rev would have a hard time pulling those chops off, but thats the thing. You dont need to be the fastest or most consistent drum machine out there. You only have to be entertaining. And Jimmy totally did something special out there. Im going to listen to some Pinkly Smooth now. Nice vid!

I'd accept the criticism that the Rev's wasn't the most machine consistent, but speed was not the issue. Dude could play as fast or faster than Portnoy. Watch some of the rare City of Evil outtake and studio videos. There are lots of really good Drummers, and then there are once in a lifetime elite talents like Portnoy. The Rev's skill combined with his ingenuity and unique sound both on the drums and vocally, his writing ability, his bizarre and eclectic tastes that spilled into his work, and most of all his character make him a sort of once in ten thousand lifetimes talent. I'm not saying he was the better drummer, but he was the better musician, and if I had a choice on who i would ever wanna sit down and speak to, have a drink with, it wouldn't be Portnoy.

You could put a masterpiece together with the fallen members of great bands who didn’t see their 30th birthday. Imagine a 25 year old Randy Rhoads and a 28 year old Rev. Wow. The rev was also a brilliant singer and song writer. He wrote several entire songs for Avenged Sevenfold, such as Almost Easy, Brompton Cocktail, A little piece of Heaven and Welcome to the Family. I would assume that Syn wrote the guitar solos. If anyone is interested in a hidden gem with Syn on guitar and The Rev singing and keys, Pinkly Smooth is a band that has 4 or 5 songs out and they are great, written just before Syn joined Avenged, as the rev was just beginning to play with them. The second time I seen avenged live, in Huntington, WV of all places, I met Shadows, The Rev and some girl in the elevator of the Pullman plaza, I was going back to the hotel to get drinks since I couldn’t drink at the time, legally. It was the best drinking decision I’ve made ever. What a great night. The only bad part was that I missed my favorite song of Shadows Fall, which at the time was “thoughts without words.”

The Rev really inspired me to want to drum, but sadly, I never could afford a kit to get started. It’s nowhere near the same, but I got my fix playing Rock Band with the cymbals installed. Nowhere close to the same thing, but it’s the best I could do. Still hoping to own a kit one day and realize a long time dream. He was truly inspirational.

One of the drummers that made me knuckle down in drumming. My first true inspiration from drums was seeing my dad play, and thinking I want to do that. But the rev was my first favourite drummer ever.

id love to see a video like this on ex Fear Factory drummer, Raymond Herrera, had such a cool style, basically kick snare and hi-hat 98% of the time but had such good drum parts, and always played what the song needed, nothing after tthat. he was one of my favourite drummer growing up

Though he’s closer to the bottom of my list of top drummers nowadays, he was responsible for a lot of early drumming style and even stuff I still use today. Such a great drummer.

Yeah...he was good. But he was nowhere near the 'best' or 'genius' drummer that this guy is making him out to be. That is the problem with these youtube channels that do these videos. They make these videos talking about 'the best' players or drummers....but what they should really be doing is adding this line to their video titles, 'The Best drummer YOU WILL HEAR ON THE RADIO'. or something along those lines. I can name 100s of drummers that are far superior to 'the Rev'. ...they should start by featuring a guy that is a little more underground, but most serious music fans will be familiar with...a guy like Sean Reinert..or even Gene Hoglan.
@thunderstyx362

@@michaelr.4878 Exactly man.. There are SO MANY metal drummers that are far superior (Gene Hoglan, Bobby Jarzombek, Danny Carey, Dave Lombardo, Mike Mangini, Mike Portnoy, I could go on and on...). I like the Rev but his drumming isn't anything special to me. Sorry kids 😆

@@michaelr.4878 Yeah, fast double kicks and polyrhythms? Not quite revolutionary. The last point, though, is definitely the best advice for aspiring drummers. Hell, on the other side of the metal spectrum, doom metal with it's very low BPM is way harder than you'd think. I agree about the radio thing. Was Avenged Sevenfold the heaviest mainstream band or maybe one of the first? This would make sense of his popularity. I kind of think these videos might use name recognition to get clicks/promote their courses. Makes sense to me; the same drummer demographic of Avenged Sevenfold probably wouldn't click on this video if it was about Thomas Haake from Meshuggah which, I think, would fit this particular video's three points better. However, Meshuggah isn't radio friendly for some reason so the popularity to promote content for viewers isn't there. Needless to say, The Rev is just a solid drummer. Good on him. Edit: forgot the ?
