I'm a blacksmith, not a knifesmith/bladesmith, but I've made knives before. I generally make tools from farm implements (based on my farm upbringing) to tools ranging from screwdrivers to hammers and everything in-between. I started out making what I needed to do carpentry to mechanics to cooking and eating. There isn't a tool that I don't have that I can't just go into my shop and make. Perfect, no. Functional, yes. My scrap steel, free or cheap makes whatever I need when I need it, and if it's a one time need, or something else needs to be made, it's there to become something else. I'm no pro blacksmith, I'm a farmer blacksmith. I make amazing Functional art pieces but my tool making is for myself or friends and family that don't have a lot of money or time. My tools aren't art, they are Functional and cheap if not free outside of the heat I use to forge and my time. Outside of my chisels and forging tools which I use to make future items, if I got the steel for free, then if someone is in need, those makeshift tools are free outside of the satisfaction I get from making and helping. My tools I make aren't art. They're cheap and highly functional and perfect for one-time uses, steel is steel in whatever form. It's as simple as heat hammer and anvil for one cheap tool to become another cheap tool. Men who can't create pay for others to do it for them. I grew up on a farm where tools and tractors were expensive, and profit was meager. You did what you had to do to fix a tractor or implement to get the harvest done to make the money for the year (spring to spring is the farmers New Year) the winter was spent in the shop or barn fixing the tractors and implements while there was down time to do so, so there was no scrambling to fix before the planting, cultivation or harvest. The one thing we never made was plow shares. Anyone who knows anything about farming or plows knows there's the consumable high carbon steel parts that take the wear and are designed to be replaced, and then there's the plow share. One being high carbon steel and the other being mild steel. One being high tensile and in its nature hard, strong but brittle, the other being soft flexible and more likely to wear, both positioned in areas to their best effectiveness. We harvested parnsips with a single share plow that used to be drug behind horses with our blue 1955 Ford 5000 tractor hooked to the tractor via a chain. Plow them over, hand harvest the roots, 5 gallon bucket, to a 55 gallon brute, to a trailer, to the wash rack, to the conveyor belt, to 25 pound bags, to the produce cooler, then to OGC and payment. We were 32 acres making 110k a year with little to no overhead outside of anything we couldn't make from a piece of metal or tool formed to function outside of its intended use from another tool. I'd say that's the definition of a man, but I saw my 5'4 98 pound grandmother do everything we could do and she did it, then she raised 5 kids and 9 grandchildren and cooked all the food, took care of the house and the raising. She was tougher than all of us men. A little southern California girl showing up Oregon men up at every turn.

Whom Can We Trust If No One Is Trustworthy? One of my favorite quips from Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is when Tom is defined as “a glittering hero…the pet of the old, the envy of the young,” and there were “some that believed that he would be President, yet, if he escaped hanging.” With these few words, Twain captured the essence of leadership in our world. Those who get to the top are the fiercest, most determined, and most ruthless. Today, the latter quality has become so intense that we can no longer believe our leaders, and certainly not trust them to have our best interest in mind. I am not accusing any leader in particular, or even leaders as a whole. It is simply that in an egoistic world, where people vie to topple one another on their way to the top, the one at the top is clearly the one who trampled over and knocked down more people than anyone else. Concisely, to get to the top in an egoistic world you have to be the biggest egoist. So how do we know whom to trust? We don’t know and we cannot know. All we know is that we are in the dark. In a culture of unhinged selfishness, any conspiracy theory seems reasonable, while truth is nowhere to be found. When every person who says or writes something is trying to promote some hidden agenda, you have no way of knowing who is right, what really happened, or if anything happened at all. The only way to get some clarity in the news and goodwill from our leaders is to say “Enough!” to our current system and build something entirely independent. The guiding principle of such a system should be “information only,” no commentary. Commentary means that information has already been skewed. Information means saying only what happened, as much as possible, not why, and not who is to blame and who we should praise. Concurrently, we must begin a comprehensive process of self-teaching. We have to know not only what is happening, but why we skew and distort everything. In other words, we have to know about human nature and how it inherently presents matters according to its own subjective view, which caters to one’s own interest. To “clear” ourselves from that deformity, we must learn how to rise above our personal interest and develop an equally favorable attitude toward others. This is our only guarantee that our interpretation of things will be even and correct. Once we achieve such an attitude, we will discover that the bad things we see in our world reflect our own, internal wickedness. Our ill-will toward others creates a world where ill-will governs, and so the world is filled with wickedness and cruelty. Therefore, all we need in order to create positive leadership-and to generally eliminate ill-will from the world-is to generate goodwill within us. When we nurture goodwill toward others, we will fill the world with goodwill. As a result, the world will fill with kindness and compassion. By changing ourselves, we will create a world that is opposite from the world we have created through our desires to govern, patronize, and often destroy other people.

@@kidkique Science. When all that was available was non-standard, non-homogeneous steel, mixing the layers could make a more homogeneous piece of steel that wouldn't randomly have critical brittle or soft zones that would cause severely irregular wear or a catastrophic failure of the blade. Nowadays you can know exactly what kind of steel you're working with and trust that the entire piece will not have any spots too different from the rest. A more engineered alternative layering technique to Damascus steel would be to forge weld together different steels of different properties with a specifically designed purpose, but it probably wouldn't look as stunning. Like OP said, Damascus steel is nothing but an art in the modern world.

Just wondering, was it ever marketed as pattern welded steel? I'm a blacksmith and always find it weird that people call it Damascus. The technique for making Damascus steel was lost hundreds of years ago, but researchers figured out it was made in a crucible, not forged like how you see in this video, and pattern welded steel is what is available today (in fairness they look somewhat similar, and function somewhat similarly)

You may think this knife may have originated in Damascus but it can actually be traced back to India, where it is referred to as Telangana, Wootz, or Ukku steel. From there it settled in Damascus, Syria, where it got its name.
@michaelchase418
@michaelchase418 5 месяцев назад
It definitely isn't Damascus in origin, but Damascus was the center in which it gained notoriety. Most of the so called crucible steel (wootz steel) came from a variety of places outside of Damascus. That's not saying wootz steel wasn't produced in Damascus but it's not solely based in Damascus. While the steel itself is intricate and pleasing to look at, it's really just a mix of high carbon and low carbon steel. The low carbon steel doesn't rust or stain the same as high carbon steel, hence getting the intricate weaved patterns of the mixes of steel types and staining. It's not a superior steel/iron material but it is beautiful.

"Damascus steel" is the type of steel, of a specific metallurgic makeup and using a specific process (the "Woot" process). True Damascus steel develops a natural surface pattern, as a result of the makeup of the steel and the developing "woot" process. What was shown in this, and many other videos claiming to be "Damascus" steel, is pattern welding, the process of folding different alloys to CREATE a pattern. Just because a term is coopted and used incorrectly does not make it correct.

Colloquially it's damascus. This argument has been taking place for about 3 decades. It's like calling petroleum fuels gas in USA. It's not gas at all. Alot of places don't even call it gas. The definitions of words are often misinterpreted and co opted to mean something else. Take some colloquial language used in the last decade. Sick = great, very good. Cap = not true, false, lie. You get the point. Don't argue semantics like it boosts you're intelligence points. You know what is being referred too.

@theawo-no8535 You got some data on who is producing definitive damascus steel today, if you can even define it? This does not include tamahagane, which is produced in even less quantities. I've got a fair idea within Australia. USA would be a dozen or 2, the entirety of Europe would be very little. It's a semantic that's been argued for too long. Traditional damascus is junk in comparison to the colloquial modern damascus in which really both should be prefixed. Tamahagane is rare because it's really pretty terrible next to any modern steel.
