Old school here I’ve always collected physical media ever since the 80’s music and movies ,I don’t and never will trust internet services because so many todays standers are effecting past and present music artists and films ,now my son doesn’t understand this no matter how I explain it to him, so my physical media collection will go some where after I’m gone. It’s a shame today’s generation see what’s around the futures corner of media control. Remember Fahrenheit 451 it was glimpses of what’s to come.

So I had a over 2,000 DvD and blue-ray collection but I just put it all on an external hard drive that now has over 5,000 movies and tv shows. I even made 2 copies incase. As along as I just keep up with the times and transfer it so much cheaper. I am not trying to be mean or anything either just saying that basically what I did was just put everything on onw DvD or whatever. it's the same logic , I have a physical copy of my collection via external hard drive , only it's 100 times cheaper and let's face it your really just buying the cheap DvD box and crap like that. Music is different and a little before my time so I cannot speak on that. Or at the very least you showed just do it anyways incase of like something crazy like a fire or something.

100% agree. Censorship has gotten out of control on streaming sites - owning the original releases on physical media is the ONLY option to get the fully uncut versions. Streaming services seem to be getting worse and worse. I never used to collect physical, but I now prefer having the media there at all times and it's nicer to actually own it. I'm sensing others are seeing the same and physical media sales seems to be going back up which is just crazy when you think about how it went away for a while. I COMPLETELY forgot about all the special features on these things too, it's absolutely incredible how much more content you get!

Here is my issue , I had a 2,000 + collection of DvDs and Blue-ray. Once my cousin showed me how to torrent movies and such, I went through my collection and put everything on an external hard drive and then have just gone that route and sitting on like 5k+ movies and TV. I even made 2 copies incase when got messed up. Keep in mind not a collector and such and just a buyer and watcher but it got me thinking about just selling "used" external hard drives but leave the content on them. Just not sure how legal it would be.

Yes, but the irony is, the fewer people who buy physical media brand new at full price, the less incentive there is for stores to carry them The fewer stores there are to sell them, the less incentive there is for studios to put the effort into producing the physical media. Don't get me wrong, physical media everyday all day, but we have to know what part we are playing in the decline of physical media.

I remember what a friend of mine asked me when Netflix and some of these other streaming services started to come online. He was like, all of the movies you want to watch will soon be online, so you can get rid of your physical media and free up some space in your home. I was like, what happens if a movie you like gets taken down because it suddenly becomes “problematic” or they no longer want to pay royalties to keep it. No thanks, I’ll keep my 900+ movies and TV series in physical form. That way, I can watch what I want, when I want. Fast forward a few years and this actually started happening. My friend was like, I’ll bet you’re glad you kept your physical copies aren’t you. I was like, yep! 👍🏾😀

I never have to worry about Netflix having the movie I wanna watch or a bill every month. Now I only buy about four or five movies a year when they come out that I like, i’ll buy the new Ghostbusters and Godzilla King Kong movie when they come to 4K blu-ray and it will be so much cheaper than buying Disney+ Netflix and HBO for the year. Excellent point on the used market as a resource for collecting. The downside is, like others have said, it doesn’t encourage companies to keep producing new physical media because they don’t see any money from that. My general strategy is to buy “new” for recent releases (that also applies to new releases of older films), but buying used for older releases if I can.

I would add that if you're diving into physical media, audio/video is a big part of it. Just like the video said when it comes to buying the media itself, the used market is also the way to go. A/V is also a huge jungle, so here are some tips. If you already have a TV, a soundbar is the most obvious and fairly cheap upgrade. You won't believe how much of a difference a proper speaker can make when watching movies, or even TV shows. If you're more ambitious and want to go for a proper surround setup, but don't want to drop a lot of money, start small: surround receiver and a stereo speaker set. A receiver (or amp) with a lot of miles left on it can be found really cheap - my dad is using my old Denon receiver now, and it's over 15 years old and still kicking. It doesn't support Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, but if your player does, you can often set your player to decode the signal instead, and you still get Atmos. The most important speakers in a surround setup are the front speakers (or stereo speakers), and the center speaker. And it's a good idea to keep those 3 speakers within the same brand/series of speakers if possible because they'll have the same sound profile. The rear or side speakers do not have to be the same brand/series, but don't go too cheap because they are still important. The same goes for the subwoofer. If you get some beefy floor speakers, the sub might not be needed, but that's up to you to decide. Also don't go too cheap when it comes to players. While you don't need the most expensive and advanced player on the market, it is important to keep an eye out for certain issues. Some modern 4K players have issues with layer shift, something that was completely done away with in the early days of Blu-ray, but somehow came back. You'll see this as a slight pause in the film, maybe less than a second. That said, if you don't care about 4K, any brand name Blu-ray player will do you good. And at this point you can probably pick up 10 of them for $20 and have backups. The important thing to worry about when it comes to players is: do you want to import films. If so, you might need a region free player for DVD and Blu-ray, 4K is completely region free. If you're a new collector, take it from someone who's been collecting since the 80s - don't care about 4K. At least not in the beginning. It's expensive, it requires both a good TV and a fairly expensive player for you to notice the difference in quality, and a format like that needs a very good soundbar, or a surround setup. I collect 4Ks myself now, but it took a long time to jump on the wagon, simply because the discs are still super expensive compared to Blu-ray, and I needed both a new TV and player to notice the difference. Don't get me wrong, the upgrade IS worth it.. if you dump a lot of money into it. And Blu-ray is great - good video quality on modern screens, uncompressed audio, cheap players, and it looks good on a 15 year old TV! The last thing I wanna say - if you're going for DVD instead of Blu-ray and 4K, be aware of the early days of DVD. DVD was out for some years before 16:9 TVs became standard, and you can still find 4:3 cropped versions of movies in the bargain bins, or letterboxed movies (also called non-anamorphic widescreen), and those look like shit on modern TVs. I'm certainly not a Blu-ray / 4K purist, and still own a lot of DVDs, but those kinds are crap.

Ive had a huge DVD library for years that I picked up from Car Boot sales / Swap Meets and thrift stores ..I love older harder to find movies That Netflix never have any and on Prime they're crazy expensive to watch ... Some of the older films fetch good money too on the second hand market so I think my collection has probably increased in value ..

Buying a large lot is a great way to start a collection. It takes a lot of the flavor out of it once lots start having a bunch of duplicates, but dang those first lots are so much fun. All the better if it's a local you're buying from as shipping can be high.

As a PC gamer, I can say I do not miss 5 plus CDs to install and a key code you had to have. I think movies will always have a physical market due to better quality on a disc but gaming disc is going away. Basically, anything on Xbox Series and PS5 you need a patch or maybe even online to play.

The bargain bin at Walmart and complete series for 60 or less. Got south park 1-10 for 44$. Ad supported streaming with no sign up/sub like Pluto, Tubi and Roku. If you grew up with blockbuster and cable, these are indeed good times especially when you consider cost of everything else with inflation.

You made some fantastic points in your video. I have begun collecting 4K UHD's of films i really like and would repeat watch, also picked up DVD's when 6x for £1 in charity shops and have always bought physical console games. I do think media centre's are a good compromise for people that like Netflix style content delivery but without the loss of content being taken offline, rip your films / tv to a hard disk and then stream it to any household device.

It depends, the cost of Vinyl has almost doubled in the space of 2 years. Im in Australia. When i started getting into vinyl 5 years ago. It was pretty rare to see anything new over $30 AU. Almost everything had some sort of liner notes because that's what many love about the media. Today its $55 or greater for a new release and no liner notes on many releases. Retail stores like JB Hifi frequently would do 2 for $50 deals. It really helped me getting started. However i know that if i look after them, i won't be subjected to the righs moving between artists and labels and or streamers pulling the content because of political trends. Just last weekend i bought Moana and Encanto on vinyl for my daughter. She absolutely loved it. You don't get that experience with digital.

I'll collect physical media as long as it's available. Ive been hearing/reading that studios may start altering their movies and tv shows. Like leaving out certain scenes or leaving out episodes. MAX has left out 1 or 2 episodes of FRIENDS for example. Streaming services can take off a show or movie whenever they want. Physical media is yours forever and cant be altered.

Physical media isn't dying as many are claiming but it is becoming a solid niche market. What that means is that prices will increase, perhaps quite a bit, to meet the lack of volume and availability will be more limited. But there will always be people who want to enjoy their media in the best quality. 60 some-odd years on albums are still a thing for a reason. I have to watch/hear my favorites in their best quality and streaming just can't do that. Disney+ has one of the best streaming bitrates and A New Hope on Disney+ vs A New Hope on 4k Blu-ray is quite noticeable to me. I'll always have a copy of my favorites on the latest tech. I've owned A New Hope on Laser Disc, VHS (maybe 3-4 copies?), DVD, Blu-ray and now 4k. If they put it out in 128K, I'll buy it.

I already knew it from the Start where it was just announced before trending, that Streaming Services with digital Media will become a huge Problem and cause a lot of Damage to Movies, Games, Shows and Music. If you own physical Copies only then you can be sure to actually OWN the Stuff you paid for. Digital Media what can only be accessed online you never actually own despite you paid for it, because then they just can remove it and take it away from you or just completely changing it because "problematic" nowadays for "m0dErN aUdIenCeS". I remember how many People laughed at me first when I was telling them that back then, but now they finally realized that I wasn't a "dumb paranoid old Guy" who's against technical Evolution or something and that I just was telling them about the dark Reality 😀
