In this video I talk about the most relevant question before starting a software engineering career.
A lot of people are in for the money, and that's completely fine. But is it enough to successfully pass all the hurdles along the way?

Also: I will always take "mediocre pay" with nice atmosphere, lax working hours, no corporate bullshit etc., vs "big money" with... well, yous know how stressful this shit can become xDDD

My first programming job, at 19, paid me the same as I'd get in a fast food, or less - basically minimum legal wage. But you know, it was minimum wage in air-conditioned office, with free limitless drinks, typing on a laptop, not standing in a hot kitchen while being yelled at for drinking some water. And looks more impressive on CV. However fully agree, that "it just being nicer on the surface" is not good enough reason to get into this profession. No hurt in trying to learn to code of course :D

It's not programming anymore. It's configuration management and integration. Countless tools with dry documentation and solutions only applicable in that context.

This. I don't manage coders and code anymore, I manage what they can't handle. CICD and actual proper architecture (this second thing literally nobody does properly).

been working for my very first year in a junior dev job. Every company seems to be buying the worst tools for inflated prices because switching one thing tends to make everything else incompatible. Its like apples charging cables but infinitely worse because its invisible to the average voter and law makers so there will never be any norms for it :/

I understand where the first question is coming from, but I can't eat ideals. If it was paid below average, I'd just treat it as a hobby, and try to get something that will actually allow me to not die. Edit: I'm seeing "below average" as minimal wage or slightly above.

Doctors and lawyers often complain how much they have to keep learning after finishing school to "keep up", and it always makes me chuckle, because I'd say majority of the time spent in commercial development is reading and learning. Each day, every day, because there's always a new vulnerability, new change in API, new fancy library, new standard... Try being a lawyer that's up to date with law produced all around the world :D

Isn't that why you guys have desginated roles within the industry?
@GerinoMorn
@GerinoMorn 6 дней назад
@@peckapuncher2101 Kinda like other professions, you have tax lawyers that couldn't defend someone in criminal court, and you have nephrologists, kidney doctors, that have barely an idea how many hearts human has. With IT there are MANY ways to split it, which adds to confusion: you have the academics who write whitepapers about their algorithms and there are industry devs who are paid to achieve much more specific goals, preferably without expanding into the "unknown" . There is Frontend (what user sees) and Backend (what provides the backbone for the frontend) split, with DevOps (=having things run on a server and being accessible, secure etc., not just running on dev's PC) being "a third way". But then you have "Full-Stack Developers", i.e. folk who can write frontend, backend, infrastructure (server) stuff and deploy it all by themselves, but those might have specific "areas of interest", like what kind of applications (mobile, web, desktop), or what kind of server/cloud (Microsoft, Amazon, Google, self-hosted etc.). And then you have people who e.g. keep internet running by working with the networks on various levels, you have embed devs (who write code for a car or a washing machine or a missile), and you slowly creep toward electronic engineering. Also special mention to bioinformatics, neural network guys, 3D graphics guys and many more xD

I am 16, self-taught and run nixos because it's fun. I implemented a toy language with llvm in python because it's fun. I grinded leetcode for two month and got 1st place in a competition. I am currently implementing an 8bit cpu based on logic gates in Rust+tauri+solidjs. I want to go to a university abroad (i live in a 2nd world country and am learning my 4th language for it) but I feel like I already know a lot and going will be beneficial in every way, except getting the actual knowledge of CS.

Amazing content. I'll say another difficulty with job hunting is no real standards exist. Every single certificate is backed by a company not a wider organization IE Amazon hosting courses for AWS. For several other jobs, there's at least specific certs or tests like BAR to take.

A great piece of advice. I've been making games since 2018 and this is not only agreeable, it's also reminding and eye-opening. I earned so little that I can safely answer A on the question and also sometimes I feel like it's so easy and stupid that I was confused why are people getting paid for this at all. In numbers, it's less than 300$ and 200 of which was just a gift not even related to game dev. I love what I do, it's fun, it's cool, it's enjoyable.

I avoided becoming a programmer initially because I knew I didn't want to sit in front of aa computer all day, everyday. I do enjoy the work but I was correct in my assumption. 10 years later and I enjoy it more than I did but the benefits of the job and decent pay are what keep me doing it. I also do not do side projects constantly and spend all my weekends programing. We need to dispel that mindset as it creates worse programmers. Being a normal programmer professionally is a thing. I have no desire to work for a FANG company.

I think it is completely fine to be in it for the money. Pretty much every other job sucks as well, so why not take one that isn't fun, but at least pays well?
@JebacPresretac101
@JebacPresretac101 6 дней назад
Yeah, it would also be fine if everybody wanted to wash dishes "for the money". Except, nobody does (they don't pay). If they did wash dishes for money, people actually good at washing dishes now coudn't get a decent wage doing it cause of all "i just wash dishes for money" types that have *zero* clue of how to actually wash dishes. They can also go into a mine, "pays well" but they won't.

I actually think that almost everyone with a degree and no experience is a better pick than anyone without a degree and no experience. I can guarantee that very few without a degree really understand automata, base conversions, discrete math, linear algebra, computer architecture, etc, etc. It also demonstrates some hubris since they weren't willing to even consider that perhaps there is a wealth of knowledge out there that they don't have. Instead they want to take a shortcut and just get the 6fig job right away. Just for those simple reasons, id almost always rather hire someone with a degree. I say this as a self taught developer who considered not going to college
@JebacPresretac101
@JebacPresretac101 6 дней назад
LOL. Not one of these you used outside of a personal project doing most likely a game. You clearly have zero corporate experience (C++ driver coding where you may have used this in say, sound processing doesn't count). Signed, somebody who didn't go college but paid for another's useless programming degree where she learned next to nothing.
