Nimby's. You solve it by transferring zoning laws to the provincial or state level away from the city level. There's also a building materials shortage, but that one can be solved provided the economy starts to heal. The only way to solve it now is to strip Nimby's of their ability to enforce homelessness onto others. The second reason is that housing is a speculative market. The best way to solve that is the first paragraph too, actually. The main reason Nimby's oppose apartment construction is that it lowers the property value of everything around it; once a market goes into deflation it becomes a feedback loop feeding into itself and the market would correct itself within just a couple of years.
@Bonserak23
@Bonserak23 4 месяца назад
Yeah, I think the city council is a little biased about zoning and what's built due to their own properties which brings up a whole issue of ethics but that is another thing. It also didn't occur to me til lately that property taxes and insurance is spiking everywhere. My parents have to spend about 10k a year now versus what was only 5k around 2018. I mean if your a small time private landlord I could see that being a problem but not an excuse for these large development and rental companies that are sometimes not even based in the county. Yeah great you built some stuff a be it cheap overpriced crap but you basically only built housing for people making over 60k a year and built no well designed 3 bedrooms for families. You can't raise a family in apartments built for short term working professionals and students.

Sadly increasing minimum wage to 40$/h won't fix the issue. Companies will pass the cost on to everyone increases inflation even more and you will end up being only to afford and buy the same stuff on 40$/h that you use to be able to buy on 20$/h. Worse part is you may actually end up buying less with the higher pay as taxes will be more expensive as it puts you in the higher tax brackets.

@@Casvaleon Every city has somewhere that the homeless can go for support with things like finding jobs and housing. However, to maintain eligibility, you have to stay clean; they usually drug test. The places that will house the homeless while they wait for work also drug test, do not allow alchohol consumption on site, and will also have a curfew. There are even more resources for homeless veterans, but they are unfortunately the most drug/alchohol addicted and resistant to enforced rules. When I left the air force, I lived with a friend. This classified me as a homeless veteran. I was offered a free apartment by the veterans rep at the local education and employment development center, but felt bad taking it from someone who may actually need it. I also qualified for a grant to use on top of my GI bill to go to school, and additional funding for food and gas while I was in school.

My wife and I started looking for a house to buy, as new parents of two kids, in 2020. We had no idea the market was going to skyrocket to complete unaffordability with incredibly high interest rates which would make housing completely unaffordable for us, so we were pretty picky when we should have jumped on some of them, in retrospect. Now, when we find a house that even approaches affordability(being able to at least make the payments and being house poor) it gets snatched up before we can even get ahold of our realtor. Each and every time it ends up being either a wealthy realtor who buys and rents/flips houses for a living, or an investor who buys a 350K home and turns around to rent it out for 3200 a month. It's a nightmare. The rich or investment/real estate companies are the only ones positioned to buy anything, since they can come in with cash and outbid any single family no problem. So the wealthy are getting more wealth, and the already poor are becoming more poor as the cost of living continues to climb while wages stagnate and their rents climb higher and higher. I'm not a filthy commie, but I'm seeing more and more why this shit appeals to people and why they seem to jump at the chance to throw down the elites with violent force. I make twice what my dad made at my age, and I can barely keep a roof over my families heads...

But it's been CBD 9-5ers who don't participate in the local economy, or bring useful skills, who've come and all locals have got in return is higher home prices/rent, and reduced service quality as population has increased but the supply of doctors, builders, vets, teachers, insert essential service here, etc has stayed the same. Ireland has a similar issue. However the issue has been made much more apparent and, being honest, far worse due to the immigration crisis we have on our hands. Tens of thousands of foreign nationals have been settled and housed in the space of 3 years with plans to expand the system. Yet, the Homelessness crisis is apparently a conundrum that can't be solved. Governments the world over can end Homelessness tomorrow if they wanted to. They just choose not to.

I think it's good to shine a lot of awareness on everything that's happening. I've been homeless before, and I'll tell you, the fear of poverty is a lot worse than actual poverty itself. 100%. The mass fear and neurosis that comes from trying to stay out of poverty is driving ppl to their breaking point. However, ppl who descend into poverty actually become better equipped to deal with it in the future, and those who rise out of it generally do very well for themselves.

This of course also brings a lot of people taking advantage of it with it but somehow the system still works. We still have homeless people here but many of them are illegal immigrants or teenagers leaving home but the people who live on the actual street is very low. I can imagine you can't sell the idea of giving away half your income to poor people in America.

HALT! It could (there were ideas like building tiny houses for the homeless!) but it's not what the powerful want! Why? How can you exploit people without them standing up to you? You got to have something to THREATEN them with and homelesness is a powerful threat, especially if you have kids - "You wouldn't want your kids to grow up on the street or taken from you, would you? No? THEN GET BACK TO WORK! I don't care that you are in pain/overworked/burnt out!"

Look... you can rag on NIMBY's all you want to. But if you want an example of what happens when people don't stand up for the quality of life of their towns, look at the SF Bay Area city of Antioch. Before the housing bubble burst in 2008, Antioch was one of the most desirable places in the Bay Area. When the housing bubble burst, multi-family housing owners sought a way out by converting their apartment buildings to Section 8 housing. The result is that Antioch has gone from one of the best places in the Bay Area to one of the WORST in under 10 years. Section 8 housing breeds crime and that is a FACT, despite how many Liberals are in denial of it. These desirable places in the Bay Area did not get that way by accident; they are beautiful and well run because a lot of people fought tooth and nail to make them that way, despite the politicians who wanted to turn them into slums. California's approach to the homeless crisis is imbecilic and will only succeed n expanding the legions of ineffective, corrupt non-profits gorging themselves at the public trough. Even when they try to help they usually just make things worse (rent control). San Francisco currently has THOUSANDS of vacant apartments. The reason they are vacant is that no one wants to rent at sub-market, because SF's rent control laws make it so that if you rent at sub-market, you are stuck making sub-market for however long the tenant wants to stay - even if it's for the rest of their lives.
