Why a 2022 Recession Would Be Unlike Any Other | WSJ

Is the U.S. in a recession? Many economists think that’s a possibility and by some measurements, it may have already started. But why aren’t people losing their jobs?
Recessions usually come with a dip in economic output and a rise in unemployment. Right now, economic output is falling. But so is unemployment. WSJ’s Jon Hilsenrath has coined it a “jobful downturn.” We look at past recessions and indicators to explain how a recession in 2020 could be very different.
Read more about this “jobful downturn” on The Wall Street Journal: www.wsj.com/ar...

I suggest you offset your real estate and get into stocks, A recession as bad it can be, provides good buying opportunities in the markets if you’re careful and it can also create volatility giving great short time buy and sell opportunities too. This is not financial advise but get buying, cash isn’t king at all in this time!

One strategy for protecting against a recession is to buy equities. Investors, especially during a recession, need to know where and how to put money in order to make money while avoiding inflation.

I foresee a recession lasting 2-3 years, and if inflation continues to surge, the Federal Reserve will likely raise interest rates soon. Inflation is causing various issues worldwide, such as food shortages, scarcities of diesel and heating fuel, and significant spikes in housing prices, leading to a potential financial market crash. This global downturn could have long-lasting repercussions. Given the current inflation rate of approximately 9%, my main worry is how to optimize my savings and retirement fund, which has remained stagnant at around $300,000, yielding almost no gains for quite some time.

Numerous opportunities exist to achieve substantial profits at present, but executing high-volume and nearly flawless trades requires the expertise of real-time professionals with an ISDA Agreement. The price of momentum stocks has fallen. Some, in my opinion, have nearly reached their bottoms, while others, like Tesla, are still declining in search of one. Today's market is one for stock pickers; something always rises when markets fall. Trade those or purchase some momentum stocks that have fallen in value but will eventually rise again. When? The fact is that consumer spending suffers since the majority of income flows to those who do not need it. The company I work for has made record profits year on year for the last 8 years, but that is not reflected in the salaries. So, people leave. But the other companies locally follow the same pattern, so there is little incentive to leave to boost one's salary. The only reason to leave would be for a change of scenery. It is understandable that people choose to retire or set up their own businesses. Big corporations get too greedy over time and ultimately suffer the same consequences.

As a Retired CEO of a smaller sized C Corp, where the Majority of the Stock is owned by retired Employees or their Beneficiaries and some still held by The Third Generations of the Founders Family. We always tried to give Annual Raises reflecting the inflation Rates & Job performance and Bonuses were always based on Yearly Profits, when we saw Market Conditions eroding, we would cut back on them along with Upper Management Distributions & Stock Grants, and would request The BOD to cut the Dividend, only to build cash reserves adequate enough to see The Company though any impending deeper downturn without having to resort to Layoffs. The longer-term Employees knew what we were trying to do as they had been though it before and never complained. Trying to explain it to newer Hires was fruitless as they thought it was just greed and never realized it was being done to keep them employed regardless of Market Conditions. There were times when Managers had to find tasks that required no other cost than Man Hours to keep employees busy. But in the 27 Years (of which some were operated in the Red) of my Tenure we never had a Layoff despite all the ups and down of the Economy & Market Place. Good Business Leaders recognize their Employees value and the investment you make in training them. Retaining them is a big part of being a Leader. The Corporation has been in existence for almost 100 years and that philosophy of Fiscal Management has been integral to it's existence Today.

It really isn't rocket science and the fact economist are having such a difficult time understanding this recession from others baffles my mind. The simple answer is things are too expensive while wages don't keep up. It's been happening for 40 years now, and the fact they ignore that more and more people are a) not able to afford a home or rent, b) can't afford the basics, c) are incapable of putting money back into the economy since 90% of the 70+% of Americans go into rent/utilities/food, and d) the things needed for people to start making more money have become so expensive that more people are strapped with debt and forced to put even more money needed to stop a recession from happening going to pay off student loans. People aren't buying because people can't afford it and what's worse is that the people who can afford to spend are the same people hoarding the majority of wealth, to where they're not spending it, they're using that money to make more money so they can hoard more money.

One major factor was left out is that we are seeing global inflation. I saw it in the news that most countries are all competing for parts , products food etc. Even nations that managed their rates better are seeing major issues. The glut of money was an issue sure, but the surging demand from nation that re-opened from covid lockdowns played a larger role. Add to this pandemic-related staffing issues and the intentional global oil supply problems and its a nightmare. I known the intention was to explain inflation but that doesn't do justice to the current inflation on a global scale.

We went from two incomes to one by choice because daycare for our kids cost more than half of our income. We got the idea from other family members doing the same. Everyone's urgently hiring but only for those with experience. Current salaries for the average worker are so low that if an employee decides to intentionally make life tough for their personnel, most will not have any loyalty to staying on. It's not about work, it's about the insignificant difference of living standards between keeping a job position and not having a job at all. For many people the life style is almost the same, which does tell you how severe employment conditions can be.

Look up this 2018 NPR article -- "High-Paying Trade Jobs Sit Empty, While High School Grads Line Up For University" Trade jobs are not filled because they are not sexy, but they pay well, some into six figures if you are well experienced. Also, the world does not owe you a living. Too bad that someone is not breaking your door down to offer you a job with great pay, advancement, security and security. I work for myself. 1:34 I disagree with this statement about how ‘high inflation expectations leads to cutting of consumer spending. Friedman’s analogy of ‘anticipated inflation’ would contradict this point because he believes that if consumers are expecting high inflationary pressure in the future, they will spend now rather than later to ensure they purchase at a lower price. This then leads to greater demand-side inflationary pressure due to the ‘moving forward’ of purchases from the future to the present.

No one wants to work hard, they have had it so good for so long, they can't understand suffering and sacrifice.
