I have a friend who is white who I suggested she home school her kids after she told me one of her kids got covid from the school and they had no covid protocols for the school. So I told her they don't care abt any of the kids safety and she should consider home schooling them.

Yess alot of people are recognizing the failures and pulling their kids out. I'm BW and some of the groups I belong to were very diverse.

Yes. When we first started homeschool it cost us about 70 per child to start. Now we use school house teachers and it cost $250 a year for the whole family to have access

I came to say the same thing! This is my first year homeschooling and we started on Monday. We definitely haven’t spent anywhere near that amount

High-school costs can become this high but it is unnecessary. Also if you teach more than one student, you often use curriculum over. In this way, even for an expensive program, you only pay once. Elementary and even middle school never cost this much! Buy used curriculum!

@CC. LL I have 5 and have homeschool for free multiple years. Other times I will spend money on materials, but they are never MUST haves.

Did you also know that slave owners were Democrats? The republican party was founded to prevent slavery from spreading to other states. The lies are much larger than most people realize.

That’s what I recall too. I’m in high school and namely, I was at the best public high school in Chicago - Whitney Young Magnet at the time in the late 90s. I couldn’t understand why my US History teacher who was black was teaching me from a textbook that made it seem as if slave owners were nice to slaves and occasionally teaching them to read and write, allowed them to have families, and gave them shelter and food. I wondered why they downplayed the atrocities and couldn’t understand why they made slavery sound like fun singing away and working in the fields with plantation owners treating them like family. It’s not just the way that it’s portrayed in textbooks but even in an environment where majority of my teachers were African American (AA), the principal was AA, and 9/10 of my fellow class mates were AA did not correct it…. Worse… I was not brave enough to ask or bring it up since I was a different race and did not want to be perceived at racially insensitive. Long story short… I wish they would burn those misleading textbooks already and portray history accurately.

Choosing a history curriculum that's not "white washed" has taught me so much. Homeschooling is going to change this country in the next 10-20 years.

Additionally you can inspire them with the amazing stories of smart, articulate, educated, hard-thinking, crafty, and ingenious black people who dig their way out. Then how debilitating and evil those Jim Crow laws were. Those folks were roll models for all Americans, but they don’t seem to be emphasized either. Homeschooling is the best.

@@steff9041 Those southern Democrats famously switched to Republicans and have never come back since the Democrats decided to champion desegregation in schools - they are now the foundation of the modern GOP. If you're going to quote history don't be selective about it. This is why we need better education in schools.

@@cat56789 it should be taught in the homes period. Home schooling or not. I went to public schools my whole life AND my mom taught us Black history. Most Black parents don't teach that which I learned early on.

@@cat56789 I am white, but it was extordinary that I got to go to a school that taught black history. Most of it was review, but if a local texas public school taught what I learned up north in private non denominational school, the white parents would riot. I feel sad that my son will not have a quality education unless I teach him rigoursly during the summer, and I mainly want to send him to elementary for socialization. I'm sorry that black kids do not feel loved and are being marginalized by public schools. It's very good to see positive stories about good things happening to them, and I hope public schools get better

I’m black went to public school but a lot of my cousins and POC friends who went to private schools tell me it was rough. They faced a lot more racism than I did. It really depends on the school.

I have friends and acquaintances who have black children struggling with numerous issues inherent with being one of few POC in their private schools, yet their parents still see homeschooling as beneath them. They've totally bought into this country's failed institutions.

That sounds like fun, you should also include music classes... and explore more of the arts, anthropology, paleontology, marine biology to give your child a more diverse upbringing that they may enjoy

I did the same with my son. To this day, he is a strong disciplined student. His teachers always tell me that they appreciate having him in the classroom because they know that he comes to learn. Unfortunately, when my daughter came along everyone spent a lot of time doting over her and trying to baby her. She also was only in kindergarten (lots of playing and singing) the pandemic hit. So, when I decided to send them back to the school building last year she didn't adjust as well because she didn't like the classroom sizes, the bullying or having to do so much "hard work" all day. I switched her to private school this year and she absolutely loves everything about it. I asked her why she liked it so much and she said "less people, less trouble". She also said that she loves that her teacher is brown like her. Unfortunately at her old school, all the teachers and staff members that the children saw regularly were white. They didn't recognize Black History month nor did they include people of color in their curriculum (except for Martin Luther King)... until I spoke up. I appreciate the principal for taking the steps to correct a wrong, but it's frustrating to know that inclusion didn't really exist. Unfortunately by the end of the school year that principal retired but they did hire an African American assistant principal. My daughter came home so excited. Sacrifices are usually hard, but also usually worth it.

I pulled my daughter out of kindergarten mid year because I was really unhappy with the school. I had no supplies and scrambled getting books to teach her reading … making my own flash cards etc. I homeschooled her through 6th grade then put her in a University Model school. They go M-W-F and Tues. -Thurs. classes. It’s run just like a university. I expect these schools to explode as parents are tired of the public school system.

I can remember countless times when students would boldly and proudly call me the n word, tell me to go back to Africa, get back on the boat, yell “white power” in the hallways, etc. i can remember one specific time i had a classmate call me the n word to my face and when i told my teacher, she said, “he’s probably just joking, go sit down” I remember another time during spirit week (this was right after trump was elected i believe, so the climate at school became much worse) we had an “American pride day” and the black students wore black shirts instead and most of us got sent to the principal for that . Another time one of my best friends was walking to class from lunch and a girl called her the n word and the girls boyfriend spit in my friends face .. my friend of course defended herself and was then in trouble. I COULD GO ON

How does the social aspect of home schooling work? My impression is that they have their home school group (who are typically comprised of people of the same race, economic background, religion, ability, language, etc). Do home school groups do exchange programs with other groups and kids who do traditional schooling?

I will just say this there are things like homeschooling groups which allow you to interact with other kids and develop close bonds. As someone who grew up in public schools when I moved I didn’t know how to make friends and my parents forbade homeschooling. Trying to force me into making friends at a public school of people I did not know. I never had close friends since the move, given most my friends were in my neighborhood park (my new neighborhood did not have a meeting place for kids /was geared towards elderly), which goes to show you can have interactions/groups without the school system. I do not believe you even develop decent relationships in public or private schools (especially in redlined/gerrymandered areas). In the end take what I say as anecdote if you will but as someone who is almost grown and can safely say I have no friends, please consider two things homeschooling would have made me less anxious (as it would have been a comforting environment as I went to a school with its own allegations of racism) and that school isn’t the one stop for friends (again especially if you are the only minority at your school).

My daughter was bullied by several teachers. It's terrible. It destroyed all of her confidence. I pulled her very quickly.

The worst part is that those same teachers act like they "can't get away with saying anything to their students", but it's actually the opposite. In reality, it's actually very hard to fire a public school teacher, unless they sexually or physically assault one of their students.

They weren’t just ignorant, they were wrong and evil. I’m sorry you had to go through that, but I’m glad you seem to have overcome and hopefully you are doing well today and don’t carry any serious lifetime trauma. God bless!

it is les strenuous when you've got 2-3 kids actually because tasks are shared among them and they check if the others understood assignments .

There are tons of good learning materials at the Dollar Store for early learning.😃 You can also make duplicate worksheets, from different workbooks . 😃

Well said! We are in our second year currently and I’ve purposely cut curriculum costs this year because we didn’t need it! Soooooooo many free resources, printables, worksheets, online, library, etc. I managed to build a system for 3 different grade levels using things we’ve already purchased, my local library and online materials! Homeschooling is not easy however, if you’re willing to make the effort for the overall educational welfare of your children then you will succeed!

There are several free resources out there. And you can always buy used curriculum or swap. It can be done as expensive or inexpensive as you make it. I do suggest having a good quality printer though.

I just hate how some states have super strict guidelines. In MO we have to log 1,000 hours a school year. 600 core and 400 extracurricular. I’ve heard from other parents that they have to constantly turn work into and they get visits from the state. There’s a homeschool association that fights against the states tht want to make it impossible for parents.

Been homeschooling for years and you can start homeschooling from birth. Sign language and reading letters is a fun skill to teach them before age 1. Love your joy for teaching!

Homeschooling does require some element of financial freedom... a high income husband helps, or some other 'sponsor'... or having wealth, like a paid off house.

Really? Because I've had students whose parents never did such a thing. The school fed them, clothed them, and taught them.

I think every parent should be active in their child’s learning, but it’s not possible for every parent to homeschool unfortunately. Especially single parent households, and families that need more than one source of income because of cost of living constantly going up. Parents should have a louder more impactful voice when it comes to the education system in their district. I feel extremely fortunate to be in a position that allows me to homeschool and work from home, but it’s hard.

@@joytempestas3201 it’s possible these days for both parents to work and homeschool. It takes some life redesigning but it’s possible. Homeschooling isn’t a privilege! It’s a choice that takes A LOT of sacrifice especially for us black parents. It took me 6 years to make it even an option and now I’ve been homeschooling for 3 years.

The ESL might’ve also helped you with your writing/reading too and it doesn’t put you in the special Ed. Category. I think you, your parents, and your doctor might’ve done you a disservice.

@@JW-re2jm Unfortunately, I did do a couple of rounds of ESL. The teacher wasn't most patient and just was not prepared to handle a student who learns a little slower. I could see the thought process in some of the teachers. They probably thought I needed a repeat. The ESL classes felt like a repeat of the typical writing classes I did before, but just because the information is repeated, doesn't mean I will get it. 😅 My grades made a pretty big leap in improvement after I was able to have access to an EA (educational assistant.) Rather than just having information repeated, I learned how to adjust my own learning strategy. Btw every EA I encountered are some of the best teachers I know. They just have a way of making anything make sense. I also had access to the text-to-speech program. Eventually, I didn't even need the EA anymore, and I became an A/B student. Which was a massive improvement from my terrible grades before. So I am quite grateful to that doctor, now that I am a young adult I wish to thank her properly for that.
