Why a Sate Sleeve is the answer? Free calls. Better than phone booster or EPIRB call anyone anywhere

G'day everyone this week I wanted to share the ins and outs of having a sate phone for remote communications.
We used the Thuraya Smart Phone sleeve which is fantastic. We have all the functions of our Smart phone anywhere in Australia.
Emails, weather app, sms, traffic app. all possible through this sate sleeve!

Had our Thuraya Sat Sleeve for about 6 years and used it heaps to keep in touch for family and leant it to people who rolled the car and van halfway between Windorah and Birdsville to call for help. We also have the external antenna on top of the car. Connects quicker. We both have health issues so gives us peace of mind. Monthly cost just went up to $16.50 but it’s still cheap. Last time I looked data was $5/MB.

Good to hear, it's a great piece of equipment in that very scenario, otherwise it's a couple of hours of driving to get help.

We bought our Sat Sleeve many years ago and haven't had to use it but like you say it is peace of mind. When Covid started and we couldn't drive anywhere we stopped the monthly payments. Now we are travelling again we have reconnected again. Before we took off on our trip I asked a police officer what we should buy and after many questions they recommended either a sat phone or a sat sleeve. Great clip

Great bit of kit! I immediately checked to make sure it's worldwide (not Oz only) and it is now absolutely on our list for Africa. Many thanks!!

Good to hear, would be ideal in Africa, very similar to Australia, both remoteness and the wildlife trying to kill you 😀

Agree, a great value option for remote comms, though we opted for the hotspot version that stands alone and doesn't clip onto the phone (given how each now phone model changes size and shape). Like Kevin (below) we went with the external antenna on the car's roof rack for more reliable connection when moving though we usually end up with the unit relying on its integral antenna once we are set up in camp with it on the camp table. As you mentioned we usually SMS to whomever we want to talk so they ring us back to save call cost.
@GoingOverland
@GoingOverland 2 года назад
We were actually going to get the hotspot but they didn't have any at the time, but both work very similar. Thanks for the support 👍

Thanks for that. Been considering whether a sat phone is required and you've helped me settle that question. We aren't ready yet - still a few things to do, but I'm hoping that Star-link will become portable (portability is in some kind of "trial" mode at the moment). The nice thing about star-link is when you get home it is your home internet and when you are out "there" the service is just as good as home. With a VOIP service we can call anyone anywhere and be called, send and receive emails, upload to youtube or download from youtube etc. etc. But, the mobile aspect of it is still in trial and have to figure out how to accommodate that huge antenna on the roof of the car. The camper is covered in solar panels edge to edge, so it will need to go on the car roof and the antenna is not small - its basically a radio dish, just flatter.

OK, great information! Now I gotta find out if we have this available here in America. We live in NC, and the last hurricane knocked out our cell and home phones (and power) for over 2 weeks. This would have been great to have! Thank you!

Regarding your walk around wolf creek crater, I couldn’t recommend MORE you get a set of portable CB, carry one with you all at all times out and about with the kids and wife- 15km range from a decent 5watt. Call back to base if you get separated etc. keep the sat phone in the camp 👍 but good info! Might get one myself… 😎

Great info Adam. I bought a ZOLEO for my trip up Cape York last year, it will Bluetooth to your phone, and SOS with unlimited Text messaging, but unfortunately you can’t speak. I was going to look in to a Sat sleeve prior

They are a good insurance especially if you need to talk to to someone straight away and can't wait. But being able to text is so much better than nothing, and will be ideal 99% of the time

that's interesting! I think I can see with the settings obviously it can do data / gps location and calls . but I assume those packages might be more costly where as you can receive a call for free.. seems very Worthy I think in the next few years this technology will have progressed quite a bit with more ble features. direct from your device .

As it uses your existing phone, do you still recurve all your normal texts and emails?
@GoingOverland
@GoingOverland 2 года назад
Yes if you go into the settings and turn internet on, then go into the email apps. I'm not sure about text to the mobile phone, I'll have to check that out, but you can text to and from the sate phone number and app.

I have heard that with the iPhone the incoming call alerts don’t work unless you have the app open on the screen and the phone unlocked. I am not sure if you are using iPhone or Android but can you comment on how this works for incoming calls?
@GoingOverland
@GoingOverland 2 года назад
We have Androids, if the sate sleeve is on and connected to the phone it just works like normal. The screen can be locked and phone in normal standby mode and calls and texts will come through and phone will ring or beep
