The G9 is still a great camera with a wealth of features! It's so easy customize to make access to its features. Press and hold a function button to get a list functions that be assigned without going through the menu system. My G9 has buttons assigned for video, 4k/5.6k video/photo, exteleconverter, image size. These allow me to quickly change modes by touch. The menu system is one of the best! All the power of the G9 is accessible. Glad you found it in 2023😊

Me too, I took it for a long weekend in the Napa Valley, and I'll post a video about it in a week or so. It was nice to travel with a much smaller and lighter camera bag.

So I am a die hard MFT user. Pushing said "limits" are a very fulfilling goal for me. And yes, I am fully aware of the small sensor set backs. But luckily technology has our back. And photography also depends on the person handling the camera. But recently I had 2 camera in my cart. The Lumix G9 and the Olympus EM1X. I went with the Olympus strictly due to 3 things : better weather sealing, phase defection AF, and I am dedicated Olympus/OM System user. Keep making MFT content please. We need more voices.

After my 1st long weekend out shooting with the G9 I'm amazed how much fun is was to use. And I've owned so many cameras in my 35+ year photo career from my Contax 35mm and Hasselblad 120 cameras to my first digital camera, a Kodak / Canon hybrid 2MP to Canon 5D to my Sony A7R III I own now. But through all these years one thing we all need to understand as photographers is that we have a voice in guiding the tools we want to have made. And by speaking up and sharing our experiences we can point the way to future tools that aid us in our creations. Thanks for sharing Cory and I plan on creating a lot more about MFT in the future.

The weather sealing claim of Olympus over Lumix is marginally better at best if at all. PDAF has never been proven to be superior than DfD in regards to stills. Video maybe a different story. As for System, Lumix has been arguably more intuitive, thus easier to use. However, if someone is use to Olympus menus, then that must be the way… µ4/3 is simply a misunderstood system by many, influencers are to blame… 🤔

I love my G9. If you haven't used a G9 do NOT underestimate it because of its sensor size. I own an S5. I have owned a 5DIII, 77D and other Canons. I also use the D500 and R7. There are very few situations the G9 can't handle as well as the others. Use good, fast glass and you're set. If you want a real bargain on an excellent camera, find a lightly used G9.

If I were you, I'd have gotten it brand new. This is one of my most favorite cameras, everything about it is just amazing. Sure, it has its limitations, but the ergonomics and the dials, and the top LCD-it's just such a joy to hold in your hand! And I still use it professionally today. I think this camera will be remembered for a long time, heck, it's already legendary at this point. And that's why if you can, get it brand new. Future proof it, buy all the accessories you can get while you can still get them; get a whole stock of batteries and chargers, and only use half of them, and save the other half for the future! I've had many cameras up to this point, and I have no doubt I'll have many more. But, in all the years to come, and when I'm old and much, much more nostalgic, this is the camera I hope to be pulling from underneath my bed to have a slow walk with. There are so many great cameras today, in terms of specs and capabilities. But to me, that's the ultimate "camera test." Is it gonna be something you'll want to be buried with? Yes.

I had a chance to use the G9 with the 12-60 lens and I was truly amazed with the image quality, the colors and sharpness was incredible. I am primarily a Canon user, R5 and R6 with Canon lenes, but the G9 had its own character, and I really loved it. The only issue I had with it was the focus in the view finder, it was a bit quirky and jumped around a bit, not as stable as the Canon. But as far as image quality, stunning results.

I replaced a Sony A7ii with a G9 and couldn't be happier for my style of photography. As you say the extra depth of field at open apertures is an advantage of MFT. Paired with the stabilisation for still subjects i rarely go over 1,600 ISO. If I was a pro i'd likely shoot Sony (for the AF) but as a fun shooter I find the ergonomics and small package of G9 means it's a camera I have with me more often. Yes FF camera bodies have got smaller but the lenses (especially zooms) are still huge by comparison. Affordable lenses tend to be better quality on MFT too as they don't need to resolve corner-to-corner sharpness over such a large area.

Great "testimony" on your MFT use. When I purchased my G9 I also decided to invest in a basic 2 lens kit but with the Leica lenses (12-60 & 50-200) and those 2 are equally good compared to my Zeiss zoom's I have for my A7R III.

I just did the same! My use case is as a (semi) permamently fixed 'studio' camera behind a teleprompter, for recording tutorials, and I didn't want to commit a GH5 or GH6 to that. I was using a GH4 with a dreaded microHDMI port, and I bought the G9 solely because it has a proper *full size* HDMI out. I found one used for just £250, with a broken LED screen (don't need it - I have a pass through monitor). It was a bit of a knee-jerk purchase, as I knew it would be snappped up at that price, so my research was minimal. It arrived this morning and I am blown away by it, after just 30 minutes of tinkering. I can use my lenses and dummy battery, and for another £45 I can add a grip, which makes battery access easier when the camera is mounted (if ever I need it as a third camera on location). It's my used best purchase of 2023 (so far)!

Having used a GX9 (which I still love and won't sell) I bought a G9 recently, used in excellent condition at a great price I'm impressed but like using any different camera, there's a learning curve I didn't have to buy any lenses because I've those already. Going Mirrorless full frame or even apsc would have been expensive plus lenses. I'm just an enthusiast, so mf3 is perfect for what I do Thanks for sharing 📷👍

@@Fotogs I shoot mostly Scenic/Landscape with my G9 Kit; often on walking/hiking trails in the woods - “Woodland Photography”. Both Lenses are small light and weather sealed. I have been in a steady drizzle with them, and, too close to powerful waterfalls - zero issues. In Landscape Photography depth-of-field is a must. F5.6 in Micro 4/3 is F11 in Full frame. I have gained 2 stops over my Nikon D850 Kit; which makes up for the noise difference in formats. F4 Lenses are often at their best between F4 and F8; which is especially true for these 2 lenses. This yields critical depth of field for landscape of F8 - F16 (full frame equivalent) with no diffraction. F2.8 full frame lenses will generally see diffraction begin after F8, and diffraction very often becomes noticeable between F11-F16+. The 8-25mm is equivalent to 16-50mm in Full Frame field of view, in 1 high quality fixed aperture zoom. The 40-150 is equivalent to 80-300mm in 1 high quality fixed aperture zoom. I have a lot of focal length covered with just 2 lenses!! The 40-150mm is weak at the long end, stopping down to F5.6 fixes that. IBIS (Image stabilization) in the G9 allows me to hand-hold at slower shutter speeds - really not missing F2.8 or faster. Dual IBIS does not work - you need an Olympus body for that. Regardless, the IBIS in the G9 works just fine for my purposes.

I have but have temporarily misplaced my G9. This is a great all around M43 body. It was designed as the LUMIX flagship photography body. It succeeds on many levels. It has 5.5 (I think) stops of IBIS. Big help. Love L Monochrome D setting! The body provides multiple choices for video. More choice than I actually use. I do short video clips. The G9 can more than handle any video needs I may have. The DFD is more than adequate for my photography. I’m sure when Panasonic announces the G9 Mii or G10 it will have phase detection added to the autofocus. That will help with the video. The G9 is the biggest M43 body I own. It is still light enough to carry around all day, with several lenses, and not have my back crying. The technology packed into the body is still more than adequate to produce stunning images. The fact that you can buy this body used for ~ $6-700 makes it a steal. I purchased this body new and is one of the best bodies I own. Mask On Nurse Marty

MFT provides the best balance of performance and practicality in the history of photography and the G9 is a no-compromise pro body. The fact that you can get a NEW one right now for a mere $900 (today, anyway--that's 1/2 its intro price) makes it one of the greatest values ever. I have eight MFT lenses, covering 12-800 EFL, including the Leica 8-18 and 100-400 plus the Lumix G X 35-100 f/2.8 and I can produce museum-worthy prints at any size with any of them. I can't imagine hauling around even APS-C glass, much less "FF" or MF, covering anywhere close to that massive range. Not that it's really necessary, but the rumored G9ii would raise the bar even higher. The point is, that bar's already more than high enough for virtually any photographic need!

The lenses are indeed smaller, but that's not the same as the body. I kept the G9 because for product photography that high res mode which gives you 80 megapixels is legit. My on the go is the GX85 for true portability and the Nikon Z6 ii for those times I need the benefit of a full frame.

G9 is my favorite camera, well, apart from my old Nikon film cameras. G9, just like those 80's SLR's, just feels right. The GH series went too video specialist and lost that true hybrid nature of the GH1 and GH2. The G9 is a real hybrid in that it is excellent at stills, but still excellent with casual video. When getting serious about video I reach for the GH5 M2, but as an everyday carry around camera, it is G9 all day, every day. I love the top screen, love the feeling in the hand. Really looking forward to the much rumored G9 M2 with PDAF. I will then be in camera heaven if it retains the things that make the G9 so likable. BTW, I have Zeiss classic lenses in Nikon F mount. I am able to use them on my Nikon film cameras as well as on Sony and MFT. I love the Zeiss look, and I get the choice of both the Zeiss and the Leica look on my Lumix cameras. Long live the G9 and the creative choices that camera gives us. As to bokeh, there are just as many scenarios where greater depth of field is required as scenarios where shallower depth of field is desired. MFT (same size as 16mm film) gives me plenty enough blurred backgrounds. Saying that MFT does't give good bokeh just shows the user doesn't know how to get the most out of a camera, and how to make any and all formats shine. They all have a set of advantages as well as disadvantages.

For everything else it was awesome and I still maintain the controls (hardware and software) is better than anything available today. An updated G9 with the PD from the S5ii would make this a viable lightweight travel setup. I also always though the Leica Lumix lenses played second fiddle to the offerings from Olympus which I attribute mostly to the bias against variable aperature lenses. I loved the pop and the rendition of the Leica lenses especially the 8-18 which had an intangible quality. I would say that yes because of the larger size it handles large optics very well, especially if you affix the additional grip. @@itsacookie1 In photography's context, it's not fanboyism cope at all, it's just obvious logic : - You can always compress data to a lower res level (i.e with loss), be it in term of codec (WAV→MP3 for sound), as much as you want, in a perfectly controlled manner. Thus, you can always blur what you want, as much as you want, since it's a lossy/resolution-degrading process . It's a *Deductive process* . Factually, it's already working, so what are you talking about? Facts & copium are oxymoronic. - You can't decompress/upscale while gaining resolution/data (MP3→WAV, JPEG→RAW, 240p→8K etc), i.e what would be the reverse. IA doing it is basically "best guessing", which can be very effective, but still not being mathematically accurate, as it's an *Inductive process* ; thus also, it won't be as reliable depending on the gap between the initial res & the target one. In video, the same principle applies, but it's just much less feasible & practical so far to blur a part of each frame. However, it's a matter of computing power & ergonomics rather than actual theorical limitation, where the opposite is radically different. So, factually, it's infinitely possible in 1 direction (64K→144p if you want), yet very limited on the other & always guess-based. Therefore, the argument in favor of deeper depth of field (M4/3) is none of the copium you're bringing; which then makes YOU the irrational fanboy here.

(5:00) M.Zuiko Pro glass are hard to beat, and compare well to any of the Lumix G Leica lenses. The Nocticron vs the M.Zuiko Pro 45mm/1.2 comes to mind. Also, the M.Zuiko 75mm/1.8 is considered to produce the sharpest images out of any µ4/3 lens… As a µ4/3 user myself, I often find it difficult to choose between the M.Zuiko Pros and the Lumix G Leica’s… 🤔

I have many older Olympus lenses for my old OM-1 and still adapt them onto my Sony because they are such fun old lenses to shoot with. And the New Olympus lenses have tempted me many times when I want to add a new lens in my collection. I love the 2 Leica lenses I have and use, but the constant apertures of the Olympus Zooms are nice to have. All my Sony FA mount lenses are constant aperture as well as all the Canon L mount glass I used to own for my 35mm film gear. And for the pro photogs they are a must have item for the most part.

@@Fotogs That is why I also chose the M.Zuiko Pro 12-40mm/2.8 and the 40-150mm/2.8 over the Lumix options. However, I did fairly recently add a pair of the Leica 1.7 zooms. I bit large, yes, but feels lightweight. 🤔

I've had the chance to use and shoot (my daughters) OM-D mark 4 and the size and shape take me back to my film days using an older OM-4 Ti and it's an amazing little camera. It's really just a personal choice, both will give you great image quality, I would recommend trying to go and find an Olympus and try it out, then do the same with the Panasonic and see which one you like best. I preferred the grip and wanted the additional video features to the G9 so that's the direction I went, but I still like to borrow my daughters Olympus because I love the compact body and simplicity of the controls.

@@sdhute Yea... I'm a little guilty of that, This whole M43 thing started after my daughter wanted a Olympus OM-D M4 for her birthday. Then I realized how cool it was. I started with just a Lumix G7 as a 2nd video camera. Then I picked up the G9 with 12-60 and 50-200 Leica lenses because they were so good and just a fraction of the price of just a A7R V body. (link is in the info on this video) but.... if your GX9 and G100 are still serving you well, I'd just keep using them and wait until they really need replacing. It really just depends on what kind of photos you take.

You may not initially notice but that Lumix have the best colour authenticity of any camera brand, and the ability to reproduce pale violet which most other cameras see as pale bluish-white or just white (try bluebells or other such flowers), even Olympus with an identical sensor. So it's not the sensor but the "engine".

@@Fotogs no, not really. I've only had it a couple of months and am mostly using it for stills. What I have done seems pretty good to me. Apparently you can upgrade to 10 bit/Vlog if you want to get serious, at a small cost. From what I've read and seen, it's a very solid video camera, even without that. The down side seems to be around AF tracking compared to Sony 35mm cameras, but that comes with the obvious cost, size and weight (a bit lens dependent) penalties. There's a DP Review video on it after firmware upgrades from a year or two ago that's worth checking out.

I would double check in case I am wrong. But I believe the only difference between the G9 and G9L is what comes in the box when you purchase it. The G9 is the camera (body only), the G9L is the G9 lens kit. (It comes with the 12-60 Leica lens).
