Today I'm giving 5 reasons why accounting may not be for you. The intent for this video is to help steer you towards a career you will actually be interested in, whether that's accounting or not. Hopefully by the end of it, it will either reaffirm that accounting is for you or give you food for thought if you're getting into accounting for the wrong reasons.
Also, going on a tangent about investing in your career early on. I get comments a lot that the hours worked in public accounting isn't worth the pay..... and I'll give you my thoughts on that too :)
If you need some friendly sisterly advice, leave them in the comments below or send them over on my social media and I'll do a video!

This video is great just like all of your other videos. I personally grew up extremely poor though. Most of my family members worked blue collar jobs and they’d be lucky just to move up in those companies. I feel like a lot of people are privileged enough to have a choice. I know people who work long hours at rough labor jobs. They would give anything to be able to go to college and get an education. These people complaining about accounting have probably never had a shitty job that would make you appreciate a job that is just inside and stable. I am not the best at math but for me the stability is enough because I’ve witnessed the struggle.

You sure? Tons of college grads work at walmart and Starbucks because they did exactly what you did, got a college education cause they didn't want to do the" dirty" jobs. Well, life sucks and just because you went to college doesnt change anything. Perhaps will make it worse now that you have 100k loans to pay back..

Girl, I completely understand! My family occupations consist of tile settlers, house painters, caregivers, construction workers, and farm laborers. I grew up with the bare necessity and was raised to be grateful for it. My mom made about $28k a year and raised myself and my brothers on her own, with no government assistance. Because of this, I was raised more on needs than wants. Accounting may seem dry and boring, and some areas people can be paid on the lower end but to what I have witnessed in my life and my families, they would be beyond ecstatic to make about $45k a year.

@@JK20239 They don't mean jobs like Starbucks or McDonald's (which is a whole other problem on its own), but manual labor jobs, like lawn work, construction, maintenance, sanitation, etc., a.k.a., the jobs that most minorities do. But just like dealing with cranky customers might not be for everyone, physical labor is the same, and it's much more dangerous. Plus, college loans are avoidable. I don't pay for university at all because I get scholarships and grants that cover all of my tuition, and I can still have time to work to pay for things I need (parking permits, textbooks, renting a dorm, food, etc.). It's about hard work and putting in the time; a little sacrifice goes a long way.

Always amazing to hear from you. I switched careers from a science field. I've had an interest in the financial field all my life and decided accounting was the way to get started. After taking all the accounting classes and interning in public accounting, I really liked/loved the work! I truly enjoyed it, but many people i speak to TRY to convince me that i'm just saying that. They think i am either lying to them or lying to myself! For some reason, society has painted a picture of accounting as something you just do to earn money, but i think it really takes a certain type of person to enjoy accounting and there are people who truly enjoy it. Unfortunately, many get into it for the wrong reasons like what you described, and unlike other fields, it has less filters that take out the people who really shouldn't have pursued the field. It's really great to hear from someone who has stayed motivated in accounting and continue to enjoy their career in accounting. Thank you for sharing all your career thoughts, experiences, and advice!

My goal today was to find out more about what the work and working environment in the accounting business were like, and if I would like a job in this area. I found this video, and every word out of your mouth made me happier and happier. I need a desk job, love routine, and high on my priorities list is to have a steady and reliable career. I am perfectly fine with doing simple-ish math, especially when it's routine, and frankly accounting sounds very similar to what I already do at my part-time job, which I don't mind at all. This has definitely reaffirmed things for me. I passed 4/5. I love data input, working on a laptop in an office, not too much people interaction, sitting for most of the time, having a job that provides a stable life (it doesn't have to be big money), and i LOVE (and actually need) routine...it just suits my personality. I can't have to much of the unexpected going on at work it literally drove me insane (emotional issues) at my current profession so I decided to go back to school this fall and major in accounting. Im EMBARRASSED that the only point I didn't pass was the first one: I don't REALLY like math...BUT I can handle basic math and I do have a background in retail where I did some book keeping (don't know if that helps) cashiering (basic math) while in college.............

I truly like accounting. I don't mind sitting, working on a computer, i love numbers, and I understand that is a lot of work. I currently work in public accounting, specialized in governmental accounting, and even though I like my job, i want to try other areas of accounting, since this is my first job. It really feels meaningful since I work in the accounting and audit assistance of the financial statements of the central government, but I commute and drive almost 4 to 5 hours per day, and it has affected my health. I was recently diagnosed with a chronic disease, and now my priorities have shift. I can't be on a desk that long. I am thinking of looking for a job where I live, to minimize the time spent driving/sitting, either in taxes or financial accounting, because I want the experience of other areas, and take care of my health. But they don't pay as much, even though I am a CPA. Anyways my rant is because I am in the middle of a shift in my career and is a bit stressful, but I have realized that accounting is a career that takes a lot of effort and responsibility, but is certainly important. So i believe this is a love/hate relationship, but more love LOL.

I'm in similar position but an accounting student.... my health is needing to be the priority now.... and sitting at my computer to do accounting home work is becoming unbearable and anxiety inducing..... but when I actually sit down, focus and get in the flow I enjoy it. I worked 20 years in the field and had to get out. No one hires older workers in accounting anymore and was restructured out of a job at age 50 and was literally blown away and out. Now I do night shift work at the airport in air cargo. Why this? There are 10 x as many people in the field than there are jobs. And in Canada we have few head offices left and no h/o no job. I was faced with a catastrophic job situation and now am employed at the airfield.

Hey girlfran! This is so timely! The fact that more hours does not equal more pay is starting to affect me so much! I don’t know I almost feel used. Working for a large corporation I’m seeing other departments (even like payroll) where they get time back for their overtime, working holidays etc whereas the corporate accounting department is getting nothing. No time back, not even base pay for extra time, holidays etc. Idk big sis, is this normal or is this just how my industry experience is because of the company I have? I just think it should be the same for all employees. I get it’s not about the money but how do you tell when you are being taken advantage of in this field? It’s not about the money for me but moreso being treat fairly like everyone else in the company.

I’m a pharmacy tech and currently looking for another whole different career but I really don’t know with which one to go for. You know that Pharmacy Tech is a job where you interact with people all day, and Im an introvert so I really don’t like dealing with people 90% of the time. I noticed how I rather sit down in a corner and archive prescriptions rather than interacting with patients and stuff. Would you recommend someone like me to study Accounting?

Accounting is every introverts dream. I originally went to school for nursing, but I came to a realization... I am a introvert . As much as I rather be a nurse... it’s more practical being in accounting. I am a people person to an extent but I get drained over too much socializing. In the medical field being Outgoing is key so us introverts will be DRAINED & BURNED OUT super quick.. Although, you’re still gonna have to communicate daily lol it wouldn’t be as bad.

Also another challenge I am facing is with the CPA, with the American CPA you can study and take the exam (once you’ve meet all the requirements) but since I moved to Canada, the CPA program is almost like a course, you have to take classes, then sitting the exam at the end, which could take about 2-3 years. Such a challenge when I had already planned to get my CPA in a set amount of time, kind of like what you did.

Zanya Carey 🌸🌸 do you see a difference between the two CPA s....also do you live in Canada ?
@Peoplehatethetruth
@Peoplehatethetruth 6 лет назад
Brianna Henry they are really the same. Only thing is the states uses US GAAP and we use ASPE and IFRS. So you have to learn both simultaneously. My university made us learn all three at the same time which I found most challenging. Also I do live in Canada. They would accept CA from the UK and other accounting designations like CMA and CGA but not the american CPA. If you are designated in the US they will make you take the exam here. Which I’m sure they will make you go through the program for.

Coming from never working in an office environment and I spent over ten years in customer service then I went back to school and I got my accounting degree and got a job. I didn't enjoy it at all. I'll list why you shouldn't go into accounting in my opinion. I'm not a anal person. I don't enjoy strict rules. I like freedom to do my work. You can't have freedom people are very routine and don't like to change it. I don't stress easily but everyone in accounting does. I never had a job before where senior management was treated like celebrities. They can literally do whatever they want and I cant do anything I want. People are very impatient to train you. They are doing their work and training you simultaneously. They act like you should know how to be in an office when I've never had to use a copier machine in my life or email ten or more people daily and chase people down for signature approvals etc. Why cant people just sign things they're suppose to sign. I thought I was the new employee. sigh help.....

@WithStephie
@WithStephie 4 года назад
No I don't think you're crazy. Accounting is obviously very numbers focused but it's not just calculations. There's analyzing of what the numbers mean which goes more into how the business is running. So it's more than just math - you just have to tolerate dealing with formulas (in Excel) hehe
@joewillgo

Is Accounting really not for you if you aren't that great at math? I liked the idea of becoming one just because I think I do think I would enjoy finding where companies should cut their spending, and where they can save money. I do that daily in my life and enjoy it. So why not do it as a job is what I asked myself. But I am not so great with math and numbers in my head, does that really matter? I figured accountants just would use calculators to help them get through there days. Unless she is saying calculators are forbidden in an accounting job and you are required to solve the problems in your head only? In which case, yeah, accounting wouldn't be for me. Is that true? You can't use calculators in accounting at all?

Jovial Juanita I believe they are all routine to an extent - if you are doing Data entry then yes, it will become repetitive.
