Hillbrow is most occupied by Nigerians, zimbos, and other foreign nationals😢😢😢😢😢 2℅ South Africans lived there even us we don't feel safe😢😢Drug lords are selling drugs in daylight
@@fullerwilliams5458 Not Really, they demolish the place when they move in.....white foreigners also sell drugs....the difference is in how the area turnsout when both move in....we love our african brothers...but we need to do things different...give sandton to nigerians...you will see.....stayed in sunnyside in 2010, then our foreigners moved in...go check the place now...check the cbd's...the answer is there...we dont hate our own....we have yards of shacks in sandton occupied by illegal immigrants...no issues with any legal foreign national doe.....i know some that are making an honest living
@@mazibukomail The foreigners I'm talking about are our African brothers and sisters from other African countries.im sure he gets that. You are just trying to be a smart ass. There are our African brothers and sisters some whom I know personally who are doing good things in South Africa. unfortunately there are a lot of illegal immigrants from other African countries who come here and do illegal activities and growing up as a teenager in the 90:s I had to witness Nigerians do some horrible crimes( drugs, drug trafficking and using young girls who eventually turned into prostitution and drugs). I blame our government for allowing most of what is happening. The owner of this page is a foreigner and is here legally. He has done his research and keeps doing his research about the country he stays in to have clarity..........
I used to leave the car at home and take a taxi from Midrand to downtown Joburg( late 2000's early 2010's) just to enjoy the vibe there, and do some shopping at Small Street, but today I can't even drive through Smith Street due to the horrible experience we had with my son, daylight attempted robbery, no ways, for me it's a no go zone, due to safety more than anything. It's quite sad to see what CBD has turned out to be due to drug lords and crime, and that's my truth, very sad!!😢
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I knew 2 things: 1) I would laugh loud and long, and 2) this would not be "another quick video"🤣. I cannot say how much this family has impacted my decision to visit SA and retire to the continent. Their perseverance in settling and living an abundant life there has been incredible. I will always be grateful for all of you for sharing your journeys; we wouldn't know about any of this without you. 🙏🏾 #africa2024
The reason why Hillbrow gave an uneasy vibe is because it's dominated by foreigners from other African countries who are mostly here illegally and are unfortunately always up to no good as they commit most of the crimes in the CBD. Hopefully this will all change after the 2024 elections. South Africa and South Africans need to take back Hillbrow and the CBD
I got the biggest shock of my life when I saw the CBD, especially coming from Cape Town 🤯 like how is a central BUSINESS district so messed up when you're the BUSINESS hub of South Africa? I pray JHB is restored in 2024 cos I wana move.
Bam bam bam family. please dont ever try and venture out to hillbrow or yeoville. Even us locals dont go there. In the 90's these were our safe party areas. not now though.
🤣 Commodores... Lionel Richie... A staple in esp the coloured community 🤣 🤣🤣 you'll be surprised the length and extent of African American artists of yesteryear. Will it shock you that we are familiar with BB King, Louie Armstrong and Sammy Davis Junior too? 🤣🤣🤣 You guys are too funny 🤣 thanks for the tickle Asad😂
Dr Asad and Edriene are such a vibe, whenever you engage with them you'll always be laughing. Thank you again for choosing our country as a country of choice to settle on and most importantly to raise your children. We will still explore more of SA together as time goes, so we we can change perceptions about this beautiful country of ours. @Rickey, thank you for having them "one the chair" so they can share their experiences since they permanent move to SA.
Being in SA begins the process of not thinking consciously or otherwise about being Black. And contrary to understanding, I believe it's a by product of the PTSD all those in the diaspora feel in some form. So beyond your channels, for those leaving the "world behind", Id recommend a period of internet fasting when you finally get home to The continent family
Ricky You should watch Sarafina. It’s about Black youth( school kids) fighting against the racist government during apartheid. It’s based on a true story. Hector Peterson was one of the school children killed by the racist police. The song Dr Asad is talking about that he heard at Farmers Market, I know it and I was born in the 90s.
This is heavily dependent on political will as the area is now run by the Zimbabwean and Nigerian Mafia whom the ANC allowed to highjack buildings... so we need to deploy the Army and amend some laws... For starters, I'll be voting for a political party that will push for such reforms for this year's coming elections, and then we'll take it from there.
Just to chime in there guys. Hillbrow was the IT area to live in the 90's. I lived there in my 20s. A lot has changed in SA in the last two to 3 decades with the influx of people from all over and hijacking buildings criminality / lawlessness being allowed by our Government to grow. People from rural SA ir smalker towns, illegal immigrants allowed to just set up shacks wherever they see space and never get evicted and they know it. Even in private Township properties. This has destroyed a lot of our landscape. Even Capetown is a lower version of itself these days believe it or not.
You spoke the gospel truth! My dad says Hillbrow used to be a fancy place reserved for high class people.... until the ANC took over.... We just hope 2024 people will vote smarter and our country will turn the corner and begin an upward trajectory.
You mean cry the beloved country with James Earl Jones? Another good movie shot in SA about apartheid : The power of one featuring Morgan freeman before he was God 😉
Can't believe that the Hillbrow today that is now notorious doe crime and violence and on spotlight doe New Year's eve violence is the same Hillbrow that was a prime business and residential location a few decades ago...there are so many abandoned places in South Africa taken over by illegal people and local people and they have turned it into no go areas...I look at a place I hung out in as a coloured child in Cape Town...and now it's just foreigners and littered and I don't want to walk there...the late night pharmacy that was there for decades that I still drove to even though I don't live there I see has now closed because it's now too dangerous for their customers to come too
Hillbrow was a posh neighbourhood for whites during apartheid..during the transition from apartheid and democracy..white people fled and left buildings vacant and it was took over by criminal gangs and rent it out to poor people who moved from the townships..as the time went the african immigrants started to move in and the situation became so uncontrollable. Crime and chaos was order of the day! In recent years majority who live there are immigrants and very few south africans .. City of joburg is trying to claim back the hijacked building but the process is fustrated by rogue human rights NGOs , flawed south african property laws and corrupt officials who benefit from this. Joburg CBD is unfortunately was left to rot by white people who used to excusively live there..with thr laws the government couldnt claim back the buildings which most of the owners left for overseas and some who couldny access their building as buildings where hijacked and taken over by gangs
True synopsis of the situation with Hillbrow. I remember coming to Joburg with my dad for an interview at Joburg College of Education, what a peaceful surbub it was!! Yooh!! Things changed so quickly. We need to claim back our neighborhoods!😢
I lived in Yeoville next to Hillbrow and those places were a vibe. I have not set foot there in close to 10 years. It is just not safe. It has been taken over by shady characters.
Remember Africa will always have Africans in it. All Africans. We didn’t have borders before we were colonised and part of decolonisation throughout Africa is about losing the borders.
@@noxolotshabangu8055 Stop lying before this democracy, I didn't know what Zimbabwean or Nigerian looks like, I even didn't know there's a country called Congo. Even before we were colonised we were having only South african tribes.
Lolest, Asad, the song is "nightshift" by the Commodores. I love the song, I have it on my playlist on my phone. Hillbrow is just a mess due to the government not enforcing immigration law. 80% of people living in Hillbrow are illegal immigrants mostly from Zimbabwe and Mozambique. We just waiting for a new government next year after election so that we can rebuild Johannesburg CBD to its former glory. The current government has failed.
Hillbrow was the Sandton of SA in the 70s and 80s, it deteriorated from 1997, it used to have 3 star, 4 star hotels. I stayed in one of the hotels as a student, now it's slums
Adrienne mentioned the niceness of the teachers and students in her children’s schools….I was just talking with a fellow African-American sister who visited SA recently as well, we both agreed South African blacks in general appear much nicer than Americans. We love and miss being around our warm sisters and brothers in SA!
Thank you so much.... am glad you experienced this first hand & are witness.... our illegal immigration issues with our fellow Africans has everyone screaming 'xenophobia', whereas its not that but the need for everyone to come in legally and then respect the laws of the country.... Otherwise South Africans are among the warmest people you will ever interact with. Period.
Hillbrow is in a way not south african anymore cause it's rare to find a south african living in hillbrow.we south africans are built different from other african countries
Drivers in Rwanda make you prepare your Will before getting in the car. Between the motos (motorcycle taxis), cars, bicycle taxis, lack of traffic lights and so many people....I would just watch videos on my phone when I lived there. When in Cape Town coming back from Table Mountain, our Uber driver was from Rwanda...we could tell. LOL!
I am glad you compared Hillbrow to other ghettos because it is no longer South African ghetto. It was hijacked by foreigners long time ago by people who are used to low standard of living and morals. That is why we have been angry and trying to take it back. But when we try to clean up the place, we are called names, and labeled as we are xenophobic. It used to be clean and nice, we S/Ans are even scarred to go there. I am sure its only 5% of S/Ans there the rest who knows what and where they are coming from. We hope they will find a way back to their homes, where they are coming from.
First of all you guys should stop blaming everything on foreigners. The buildings in hillbrow are owned by South African gangsters and politicians Some GRN officials register NGOs in order to get grants and in some cases, if the need arises, they apply for buildings and the government gives them a building to use for their organisation, what these corrupt politicians then do is turn them into apartments and flats and then start charging rent, they are the ones who don't care about the living standards and they allow anyone to occupy these buildings. The South African Police is also part of these scams, when they are charged to evict these people and clean up the neighbourhood they get paid bribes by tenants and are also getting paid by gangsters who run these buildings. So yes, their are foreigners in these buildings, but it's not entirely their fault, the corrupt government officials and gangsters are the ones who run hillbrow, to blame foreigners for the state of that area, is the biggest lie ever, especially when you have the capacity militarily to clean it up whenever.
@@abede4598In SA you don't call the military on civilians, it's unconstitutional. It's illegal to evict people without a court order. You are however correct that corruption plays a part as state officials literally give buildings to foreigners, who then rent them out. it's even happening in small towns like Krugersdorp. The influx of undocument foreigners is a problem, when official unemployment is at 34% where are these undocumented going to find work, If they don't resort to crime
I used to go around hillbrow when I was a teenager but now I am not comfortable at all it has changed a lot. The last time I saw Pretoria street I was shocked and I was like I wouldn't walk there anymore plus the are thieves there who steal phones via a car or taxi window.
We are so madly happy to see everyday a growing number of African Americans inspiring many to go to South Africa! Its a beautiful country and honestly yes, we all have different expereinces through out our travel journeys but, South Africa in Particular, The Media had a lot of bad stain on it to the size that many just take whats always wrote in the media or said and use that as a referral for them not to even ever visit Msazi or even recommend someone! We also RU-vidrs and we ahev just made a video about this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ULEMpxTLJH0.htmlsi=39nUFHtIKVdqb0o0 thanks
Bam Bam Bam just like that gang✌️, lovely interview as per my expectation, Mr Jones there's no way you don't know Night shift song my guy, that's a jam here in SA
"Heart-ah-piers-port" I love Heart a dee dees though 😂 Towards the end of the interview I was dead. From the driving, to the real estate, to how long it takes to fix things 🤣🤣🤣 when y'all said South Africa is a drama, you were right. We say you're bored by choice in this country🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’ve been to the states and I experienced the sense of urgency only after I came back to SA, it was frustrating to me 😂, but in SA people have a saying “there’s no hurry in SA”. I’ve realized how chilled SAns are, that much we can learn from the States, efficiency.
I loved this segment! I've subscribed to both channels. I was in Johannesburg December 21 - January 1st and we had an amazing time! Ricky, I believe my husband met you and your Father at the Houghton one evening. We will be traveling back very soon and we too are considering making the move. Peace and Blessings to both families.
Hello Jones and Asad and Adrian ! Nice conversation good times I hope to get to the next get together when I return home to South Africa! 🇿🇦 very good content in this interview. I’m with Adrian on the Lonehill area I like there. I live up the street at Steyn City not far from Kalamyi area as well ! I love that I am close to highways as well Asad location is everything! I am a Real Estate agent in the states licensed in Florida! I came over to Johannesburg South Africa with the Real South Africa real estate tour I ended up moving to South Africa! Who knew on the Night Shift,,,!!!1
I got lost in Hillbrow...cos its close to Parktown and boy was I shook. It reminded me of bad areas in East Detroit around 2010 and boy it was an experience. Dont get me wromg Detroit is my adopted city...and i lived on Washington Blvd, CBD for 6 years...lits of changes have happened...but some areas like in most older cities...some areas are hit. The last time I had seen a mattress and a fridge just about....yeah...I avoid at all cost.
What! University of cape town gonna let my daughter know about that, But she wants a master's in film writing and her mom's from Ethiopia and I'm originally from New Orleans they visited Ethiopia last summer 2023 but I had to stay home and work😊
Our people from overseas we want yall to stay and invite many more but please stop inflating the cost of living it makes it worse for all of US localz.
Thank you Ricky Jones . A big shout out to Dr Asad & Adrienne you guys are hella funny. The comments and explanations have humour for days. Lovely interview !!!! As a South African I must say you are doing your best to get that authentic Mzansi experience.
Why wait till retirement? Look at the scares skills we need for our economy - you might just qualify to move here under one of those if you can secure employment
This was a great video. I hope that Dr. Asad will consider expanding his program to the field of education, and incorporate aspiring teachers. Especially since the schools seems to be such high caliber.
Hillbrow right. There are some parts of Joburg that have seen a revival. Rosebank wasn't what it is now in 2010-2012. The suburbs around Joburg to the East are seeing a renewal. Randburg cbd will look different over the next 5-10 years. With Joburg cbd , the rejuvenation started and then stopped. Its been super slow and hampered by politics. What also hurts it is that there are too many CBD- like options in Joburg. Waterfall, Sandton city, Rosebank, Fourways. So no one is desperate to see Jozi cbd cleaned up ( vs Cape Town cbd where thats the only option).
The only two families I am subscribed to. Dr. Asaad never disappoints on funny story telling with the ever so fun laughing partner in crime. Hillbrow gets to us all, that place needs a renewal
As a South african I watched the whole interview because I was curious as to why move to here ,what a gamble but glad you guys settled well ,loving the motherland and learning about the different cultures
Greetings from Hyde Park, Johannesburg🇿🇦Great interview. The Hillbrow experience killed me😂. That place is dangerous. The content is lit. Keep them coming and welcome to mother🇿🇦
Meant to reply on this podcast but replied on another of your short videos 😅and here I thought my comment was deleted but rather misplaced 😂😂😂How that happened is startling to me, leave The Hill in the brow to hardcore individuals 😅😂
