I loved how the movie was "boring" Like a boring family holiday, I can remember holiday resorts just like it and she nailed the feeling and tone and look of the resort.

My mum had the same experience! But she turned it off halfway because she thought it was boring but cried when I told her what happened!

I didn’t understand the film neither until I watched an analysis and I started to cry once I got it. I’ll definitely have to watch it again . I went in completely blind and I actually don’t know if that was a good idea.

I read that strictly speaking Frankie Corio was 10, as her 11th birthday was shortly after arriving in Turkey.

That describes how I felt...sort of. Mark Kermode made the same kind of remark, like remembering something you know didn't happen but felt like it did.

I love your take. I think for me it definitely does represent a rave or night club setting. Calum makes it very clear he loves dancing and I think apart from occasionally spending time with Sophie, that is all he does back home. Because he feels like he does not belong anywhere else. I also think as much as it makes him happy, it somewhat makes him worse - an addiction - and like I said in the video, it becomes his dark place.

Me too, I'd never payed attention to what the lyrics of the song were trying to say until this movie.

Such a well written comment, I loved reading it. I hope eventually you can watch this film. Also a very good comparison to that scene in Funny Games. That horrible scene goes on for such a long time and my jaw was on the floor the whole scene.

@@sonnyross1ter Thank you for taking the time to respond. We always read reviews of the films we want to see. "Aftersun" got great reviews. In fact, we were quite taken by the review at the Ebert Group website. We just felt let down. We picked up on the father's despair early on. My husband and I would pause the streaming service, from time to time, and discuss the film. But having figured out what was happening, and early on, the film seemed subtle, but relentless, which only made the despair that much harder to endure. Your video analysis was well thought out, and gave the film it's due. We just feel that repeat viewings would not be our preference, and since we have an extensive film collection, both foreign and domestic, we decided to pass. Again, your video essay was top-notch. Sorry to disagree, but keep up the good work.

if you are unable to understand one of the most beautiful films ever made, the problem is yours, not the film's. sometimes films are not products to be sold to the public, sometimes they are pure works of art. Picasso did not paint with the intention of selling his paintings. The director owes nothing to the spectators. if you like boring family comedies well… watch those

@@GoCinq5 We don't watch boring family comedies, anymore than we like adult dramas, where despair is laid on with a trowel and repeated endlessly, just in case the "spectator" wasn't able to pick up on it in the first ten minutes. We comprehended the father's despair right out the gate. We got it. So climb down off your supposedly high-artistic horse, and where the horses rear-end is presently in the saddle. It didn't take us 90 minutes to "understand" the father, the daughter or the movie. Sometimes subtlety is a tip-off that what we're looking at is anything, but subtle. And from beginning to end, we were treated to nothing more than turgid, long-take variations of what was abundantly clear from the beginning. Oh, my, middle-class misery. Middle-class-misery- vacation-time, complete with overly-self-conscious camera angles. I mean, let us all take a jumble of our bad childhood memories, drain them of any hope, add long pretentious hand-held camera shots to the mix, and instead of going to therapy, throw the whole jumbled mess onto a move screen. Give us a break. Not all human situations are worthy of placing on the screen, simply because someone experienced them or imagined them. What is tiring are film critics, who see way more movies than the average movie goer, and when one comes along that they believe original, artistic ... usually eclectic, supposedly subtle (usually tedious), deliberative pacing (so little original material, what is there has to be stretched to the breaking point) and topped off with so much directoral earnestness, the nihilistic seems are showing. Middle-class misery vacation time, complete with mud-bath. Pass the Kleenex, I'm about to cry uncontrollably.

I think it is entirely better than EEAAO. I also think EEAAO is massively overrated, for me it was just a solid film with pretty bad pacing, it felt much longer than it’s actual runtime. Great performances tho.
