i've only ever seen it shown on UK TV twice. Film4 usually has Anime seasons, but usually more family friendly like Howl's Moving Castle or Princess Mononoke, they never show Akira
Not the first anime I saw, that title is held by warriors of the wind that I saw on HBO. Akira was a movie I remember renting at a place called music plus. I was 8 or 9 and my mom had no idea what she was getting me, neither did I. That night I went home and was scarred for the rest of my life. Best anime ever.
I LOVE Akira. Kaneda is the first anime figure i ever got as a kid. I was born in 92, so the figure I had was already aged when i got it. As a kid, this film scared me. It still freaks me out a bit, but i absolutely adore the gross evolution throughout it
Ever read the manga? The story went on Much longer and even crazier. With the movie basically only covering the first arc with a few references to the other parts. Akira's power went of once after waking up, Tetsuo had a cult of super powered drug head bikers after Akira's first explosion, Akira was awake for like a year, Tetsuo was hit by a neurotoxin while mutating and evolved into a monstrosly powerful albino form that could punch craters into the moon, the woman Tetsuo saved became his girlfriend until rebels shot her and made Tetsuo go berserk, the journalist lady was lent psychic powers from the elderly experiment children to try and make Tetsuo powers rampage with negative energy by flying down while firing a satellite cannon so Akira's positive energy would react and absorb it rather then the two powers repelling each other and tear the world apart.
#4 is incorrect, the holgraphic representation of Tetsuo's power was digitally created, i've seen it on the official making of on the DVD, it was created, like Tron, frame by frame, purely using code
"Touched by as few computers as possible" as they show that exact scene, so I'll allow it. The script definitely doesn't help though, with how many times 'No CGI' (and all of the possible variations of it) is repeated during this segment. Could've pointed it out in the video but it looks like they only caught on after recording and were trying to correct it in editing.
Akira is like a phenomenon.....its like describing the effect and magic of Starwars for the 1st time...or the majesty of The Lion King. Its just an absolute Marvel.

Akira is a hugely important movie, which 'brought' (the concept of) anime to the western world, but also animation to a mature serious audience. It was a mature and serious story. It broke boundaries, and at that time, could basically only have been told through animation. That said, the manga it's based on, is even better. Much much better.

This was my first anime I ever watched. I was perhaps 10 years old and I remember BBC 2 advertising a late night showing at 2am or something. So, I stayed up with headphones plugged into my ancient colour tv, vhs recorder primed and ready to go. And in those small hours of weekday night my young mind was just blown completely away by this unknown subtitled "cartoon" I was not supposed to be watching. Luckily my parents were none the wiser. And I have been hooked on Anime ever since!
The moving having 160,000 animated cels goes hand-in-hand with the actual length of the source manga, which is more than 2,500 pages long. I've read it a couple of times, and will do so again. The artwork is fantastic, and the story is far, far deeper than any one-off movie -- as good as it is! -- could properly present.
One thing the video missed is Akira's huge impact on the cyberpunk genre. Akira essentially redefined cyberpunk. To be fair, Akira did have one part with CGI. The part where the scientist was looking at the digital glowing energy data presentation when observing the powers that Tetsuo had.
one time, i think it was in 1993 or something, a local channel aired this movie...i was blown away...i went out , for weeks, searching for it on vhs...no luck...years later....i was in a bookstore, there was a shelf called ''kids movies'' , i casually skimmed it...then i froze up, there was a tape, in a white plastic case...it said ''akira'' on it...i picked up, i couldn't believe it, i was holding a vhs tape of akira, these were years before the internet and streaming and online purchases...it was a miracle...i found a vhs copy of akira...and it was for like $10...i ran home, saw my brother in the neighborhood with the guys..i showed him the tape...he was dumbstruck....we rushed home, went to out room, closed the door and watched that movie all weekend non stop....it was brutal, gory, bloody and it has scenes we knew that our parents would kill us if they knew we were watching it.....i laugh now when i know i can just log in to amazon and buy things, but we lived in an era where finding niche things was down to dumb luck...same thing happened years later with SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN on DVD, and GHOST IN THE SHELL on VCD....what a time it was...
Man listening to you talk about Anime in the 90s really brought me back...you're not lying that trying to find anything to watch was obscenely difficult. I think there's probably a good argument to be made for the popularity of Dragon Ball Z (maybe even Toonami in general) being in part due to the fact that it was one of the few easily available at the time. Although I still remember the 9am Saturday morning anime movies on the Sci-Fi channel...that's where I was first introduced to anime actually: Casshan: Robot Hunter followed by Vampire Hunter D. Once a friend introduced me to Bio-Booster Armor Guyver I was irrevocably hooked.
Oh my god, I thought that movie Secret Nimh was some fucked up dream I had as a kid because I couldn't find anything about it, but that little clip brought it all back to me. I gotta go watch that again, it scared the hell outta me as a child
One of my favorite song Stronger (By Kanye West and Daft Punk) was the reason I watch the movie to know how good it was and honestly it is a Godlike Masterpiece, personally I'm really happy they choose this movie to represent the music.

I remember the first time I knew of it's existence was when I was a wee lad. A commercial for the VHS came out on KDOC oddly enough. It wasn't until years later when I was at Hollywood Video that I came across it accidentally and right away I remembered the commercial nearly a decade before. I finally got a chance to watch it and after doing so I had to have my own copy.

Which explains why the patterns pop out of the screen so much.

Always loved Akira but didn't know how to describe it. Then I watched it with my girlfriend who didn't like it and said it was like a "fever dream" (those freaky dreams you have when you're sick). Now I got the perfect description of what I like about those old school Anime's. Ghost in the shell, Akira, cowboy bebop, etc. Almost all of them have this same dreamy but also a bit dark feeling to them. Also while typing this, Alien(s), terminator 2, RoboCop, The matrix, Game of thrones also kinda fit this description... I just love these types of movies!
Tony! Omg good to see you, man! Akira is one of my favorite movies of all time. I was only like 7 when I first watched it. It opened my mind to anime, because later MMX4 was released, and Robotech was a daily thing and my love grew tenfold. It also features the first anime boob that I laid eyes on! Seriously though, that movie is a work of art. I had a silk poster of the movie too, but it was stolen.
Great stuff, but why didn't you make a numbered point to talk about the sound design? The music has always stuck with me since i first saw it way back when, even today. I can still hear the drumming intro and then the bike engines... then the choir starts.
I watched this movie for the first time when I was 17 I think in my friends house. We were lit and it had just came out. I was amazed back in 95 and I’m still amazed today. Ghost in the Shell, the original not the remake was another one on par with Akita though. Those two are definitely my top two of all time. I would have to say though the most badass of all was MDS Geist. Not the best in animation but the dude was unstoppable. His armor too. That midnight black and gold trimmed set is the shit. Man this brought back a lot of good memories. Very nice video as well. Everything you said was spot on about this movie. The actual meaning behind it though still boggles me a bit. Akita’s organs brought back a super powerful being or was in Tetsuo?
I watched it this weekend, and become my 2nd best anime after “Your Name”. Even though it was 30+ years old, it looks so modern and vibrant. Enjoyed very much!!
One of my absolute favorite movies I remember when I was like 4 or 5 seeing this on toonami or adult swim and I was so hype that animation could look so fucking cool.
Funny thing, i'm not an anime type guy, but recently i watch Edgerunners on Netflix, and couldn't shrug off that Akira vibe in the anime... Not sure if this is common stuff for anime or Edgerunners does have something special like Akira, but the fact is that Akira is probably the anime that everyone saw at least once in their lives...
god... I remember seeing Akira on the sci fi channel when I was like 8. My family was like "its a cartoon, no worries"and it warped my perception of cartoons forever.
I still have yet to watch any anime film as amazingly gorgeous as Akira. It might just be the limit of anime beauty. There are other gems like Spirited Away looking glossy as Hell, and Interstella 5555 being max psychadelic euphoria, but other than Steam Boy (8:49 that shot is F*CKING PAINTING), the cityscapes of Blame!, and maybe the tech. details of Evangelion... yeah, Akira tops all. Still can't believe my eyes.
It's kind of ironic and cool at tye same time, that a cyberpunk masterpiece, abput a technological advanced near future, was actually made completely analogically.
Astro Boy was like the Super Mario Bros. of the anime industry, Akira was like the Mario 64. While the former kickstarted the industry in a widespread sense and set many conventions and standards to the medium, the latter completely changed the scope of the industry and the public idea of what the medium could do. And Miyazaki is just doing his own damn thing, being fuckin incredible.
I appreciate Dubs because that way I can look at what they're doing rather than reading the whole way through and missing what's playing out on screen!
I watched Akira for the first time with my sister back in 1998 I was 9 years old. I remember being scared and disgusted. And the word Akira would always bring a horrible scary feeling. Watching it now is a whole different thing. I enjoy it so much. Pretty much the greatest animated movie I've ever seen.
The notion that Akira was entirely animated on ones has become a bit of an urban myth. While it's true Akira's animation is on one's, it is ALSO on twos (and longer, if we're counting the held frames of unmoving poses). In general, faster moments are animated on ones (motorcycle scenes, smoke and explosions), while dialogue scenes are usually less frames ( or a mixture of ones and twos for different movements in a single scene). Really great video!
The Manga is a very good read too. There is so much more to it than the movie. I mean it's 6 volumes of ~400 pages each. I was personally impressed by the strong female characters like Kei, Lady Miyako (who has a much larger role in the manga) and Chiyoko (a "true" she-hulk). I think Major General Armstrong would be glad to have Chiyoko under her command. xD
I remember... I remember 20 ish years ago, how I'd know what was in the cinema was the local newspaper (yeah, I know) and I remember being amazed that an anime movie was playing. It was Spirited Away :)
I mean... If we want to be serious about this. There's actually good arguments for both, and it often depends on the actual show. Anyone that is 100% on one side or the other likely doesn't understand the ACTUAL nuances of the topic. If you can't name a single dub or sub you find superior to the other, you have your blinders on. There's massive issues of translation, intent, and whether the original Japanese cast was phoning it in and people just THINK it sounds better because the accent sounds "exotic". Also, the west tends to ironically honor Lip Flaps WAY closer than Japan does.
Yeah. Not all, but many subs feel like the English VAs are just there to read a page for their paycheck, while the original ones sound like they're legitimately getting into the role.
Everything you said is interesting but I am surprised that all Akira's importance is reduce to technique and budget. Films are also stories. According to what you said Akira could have been a completely different film at it will be praised as long as the impact and technique are the same...
I am a child of the 80s and the only anime movie I ever saw in the 80s was The Magical Adventures of Unico and of course, The Transformers movie. Unico's sequel I saw in like either the late 80s or early 90s, I just know it was recorded on VHS. And the only anime show I saw in the 80s was Voltron. I didn't even know Voltron and Unico were anime at first because I never heard the term. I just new they looked vastly different from the 80s cartoons I saw lol.
The ,,No CGI" did surpise. I heard it was fully drawn by the artists but didn't quite believe it. That's what you call a masterpiece. But as a result of hardwork and patience. Definitely not a nowadays thing where we live too fast

For the first half of this video I was watching with a lot of interest. Then I noticed how much Tony's adam's apple was bobbing up and down when he talks. The second half was spent watching in total amusement. I should go back and TRY to watch the second half lol
