Why Alka Yagnik said NO to playback for A.R.Rahman's Roja? One of the most prolific Indian singer 

That was a finest thing ever happened in music industry. Sir AR and Chitra jee together in Roja.

No it was not like that,k.balachander (producer of roja)was not having a good bond with Ilayaraja,so the whole thing changed in the way to ARR.rest is history and this is the HIS STORY

Actual problem is K.Balachandar had misunderstanding with Raja. Already he introduced "Maragadha Mani" alies "Keeravani" (Bahubali Music Composer) in his movies "Azhagan" & "Vaanamey Ellai". At the same time Manirathnam conflicts with Raja in "Thalabadhi". He try to give chance "Magesh" (Nammavar Composer - Who passed later in Cancer). Manirathnam's sister introduced A.R.R to Manirathnam. In Roja movie Chitra sung "Rukmani" song only. In Hindhi also 1 song. Sujatha & Hariharangot a new life from "Roja"in Tamil & Hindhi, Asha Bhosle start her second innings with A.R.R in "Rangeela"

Illaiyaraja was not approached for Roja

Dnt give wrong facts..Roja flim was the production of kavithalaya legend director K.balachander and balachander and Ilayaraja did not have good terms that time..Ilayaraja was very great that time most of the tamil flims will come with Ilayaraja song only since then balachander and Ilaraja had tussle.. balachander to dump Ilayaraja looking for different new music director then director mani introduced very young musician ARRehaman to bala chander and seeing his talent balu sir booked him for his flim Roja.. and Roja was the first flim for A.R.Rehaman... that's how A R Rehaman came in to the industry. Later Roja released in Hindi also ..and become a super duper national hit...this is real fact...so dnt confuse with wrong facts to the viewers..

Actually sujatha and minmini sang all the main superhits of the movie. Chithraji rukumani song and yeah haseen wadiyah only.

@@parmadola4993 you are wrong..alka and chitra both have beautiful voice but chitra can sing classical music as well as melodies.she has amazing classical background.whereas I never heard a single classical based song of alka.shreya ghoshal and chitra for me are much better than alka.

@@thomasthomasphilp4393 true..shreya chitra lataji they are all much better because they have a classical background..if you are from south india you probably have heard of unni Krishnan,m.g sreekumar..nityasree mahadevan.s.janaki.spb.some of the artists who worked with rahman and for me they are legends..thousand times better than some Bollywood singers.

so being respectful to your scheduled dates and committments is big-headedness? Alka and Kumar Sanu were recording multiple songs a day. They would've had to go back on weeks worth of committments to fly out to Madras and work for a completely unestablished composer.

Believe me, Alka would have sung much better than minmini and Chitra.

I agree. Kumar Sanu and Alka would have spoiled the songs. But don't generalise to all North Indian singers. Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal etc are very good.

Even if they would have agreed to sing, I am sure they would have only sung the Hindi dubbed versions, so nothing would have changed for the Tamil and Telugu audiences...for them the singers would have been same.

Also don't disrespect North singers, I am sure if a genius like Rahman saw his songs working out in Alka Ji's voice then she must be a supremely talented vocalist. And ultimately Alka Ji GOT to sing for Rahman in Taal as well as in Slumdog Millionaire so yeah, she would've sung Roja songs well too I am sure.

Probably Alka ji might have been popular singer in hindi songs only But Chitra ji have been ruling in all four south indian languages (Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada) since 1980's still she's a busy singer south indian film music industry Chitra ji a living legend 🔥

No music composer will say Alka Yagnik has better range and skill than KS Chithra. Some Bollywood music labels don't want to take risk. That is why AR Rahman forced to select Kavita Krishnamurthy and Alka for Hindi version of his famous hit numbers. KS Chithra has won 6 national awards. If Alka has 36 awards nominations, Chitra has won 36 best playback singer state government official awards in different languages. So Alka's loss is music lover's gain.

@@kusumak3372 LOL....Go and check the biography of both chithra chachi and Alka ji...Alka ji started singing from 1980 whereas Chithra chachi started her career from 1985....If Chithra chachi would have been superior than Alka ji, then definitely she would have got the call from Bollywood to give her voice for hum hain Rahi pyaar ke, Baazigar, Dil to pagal hai, kuch kuch hota hai, barsaat, saajan and many more uncountable songs...but yes Alka ji was the first preference to many music directors during 90s....Don't mind...I am not comparing them but yes Alka ji's tonal quality was matchable with most of the female actresses in Bollywood during 90s...So definitely she was preferred in Bollywood than Chithra chachi...

So he approached SPB sir and Chithraji...... That's how that legendary song came out with amazing beauty......
