The US Air Force just flew its newest upgrade to the formidable B-1 Lancer Strategic Bomber. This modified B-1B, under the DoD’s BEAST program, is the latest iteration of the aircraft that extends its operational lifetime to “2040 and beyond”. According to official reports upgraded B-1s contain a technology overhaul that significantly increases the lethality of the bomber, and give them the capabilities they need in the next war.

BEAST, or the B-1 Embracing Agile Scheduling Team program, outside of being a 5/10 acronym at best, is an upgrade program for the fleet of 45 B-1B Lancer supersonic bombers in the Air Force’s inventory. The goal was to provide an upgrade package with an emphasis on not disrupting operational capacity of the small fleet during the actual upgrade process.

@pottyputter05

@JamieR2077 not exactly. They are cheaper to run than many platforms are the whole terrain following capability that's been down to like 100ft in some rather extreme testing puts it in a class wildly outside the 52. In practice I can see what you're on about but the capability of the b1 makes you wonder why the 52 is still around more so than the other way around when you see everything on paper

I just saw a report that the USA is so advanced in wartime simulation that it emerges victorious even when facing overwhelming odds in favor of the invader, regardless of the conflict realm. My Grandfather was one of the lead designers on the B-1 Bomber back during its development. He was with the project all the way from its inception through its temporary cancellation during the Carter administration and saw it all the way through to its official adoption into the US Air Force by the Reagan administration. As his grandson I’m very happy to see that the B-1 is getting the upgrade and service extension she deserves. He would be so excited to hear about the B-1s new generation of upgrades. Designing the B-1 was the crowning achievement of his career. He was also a lead designer of the XB-70 and I have a piece of wing section from the one that crashed.

Can you imagine the proposed B-1R? It was a design study for an AAM truck carrying a couple dozen advanced BVR air-to-air missiles with engines from the F22 retrofitted, giving it Mach 2 dash, and Mach 1.2 cruise. Of course, the Air Force enlisted men tasked to maintain it would undoubtedly have named it the BONE-R. Priceless.

Funny you say that. I was an Air Force brat, we moved from Hickam AFB right next to Pearl Harbor to Dyess when I was 8 in 1991. My dad retired there. My Marine reserves unit was on Dyess next to the flight line. Left Abilene for the last time in 2018 (been bouncing between there and the Pensacola area since late '04). Had a job doing landscaping on Dyess and worked at the BX. I lived about 6 miles as the crow flies from the runways, and the Abilene area is pretty damned flat for a ways out, you can hear the B1s taking off or the engine tests easily from where I lived. They used to go supersonic out in the boonies when we first moved to the area, until complaints got it stopped. Loud damned planes. When I was 10 I got to go on base and tour the flight classroom, wind tunnel, simulation training cockpit, up inside a B1's cabin (they're surprisingly cramped). I remember several accidents when I was younger. 1 had a terrain following radar malfunction and smacked into a hill/mountain. A couple hit flocks of birds and crashed. I lived next to several B1 WSOs and pilots and copilots.

The B-1 started a left turn in the direction of the ridge twenty-eight seconds before impact. At 13 seconds before impact, the automatic terrain following system aboard the aircraft generated a "flyup" -- part of the bomber's terrain-following system. Just prior to the crash crew members manually interrupted the B-1's "generated flyup" feature. The Air Force attributed the crash to pilot error.

The B1 Bomber has been around conceptually since the 1960s, the B1B aka the Bone was put into service around 1985 or 86. It was produced first in the 70s, then a 2nd run through the mid 80s of like 83 to 88. I had models of it in the early 80s. It was developed to carry a large package very fast using low level insertion. It has long been part of my favorite group of jets that included the F-14, FB-111 and the B1 B.

The B-1B is definitely one of the most beautiful of the bombers. It is positively graceful. One of the things you forgot to mention is that its incredible range can be translated into extremely long loiter time if you are closer to the front and doing ground support missions with JDAMs. I read somewhere that the B-1B did a lion's share of the close air support in afghanistan, since it could basically hang out for hours in the general area, zip in at high speed when called, and deliver a precision "lethality package" directly on target. So even though it is a dynamite long range strike aircraft, it can perform close air support well away from Manpads, as long as the enemy doesn't have the S-400.

An operation of that size probably would have depleted their strategic ammunition supply too much for the time they have left on duty.

The carriers still have all the ammo to respond to anything quickly. Flying a 40h sortie across continents to drop tons of ordinance is also a show of force and big reminder, that the US does not NEED a carrier to be able to reach you.

Chris: I think this video was one of your best. I had to rewind at least 15 or so times to catch it all. And how you spat off all those model numbers was impressive. I forgot about that plane. There are many planes I wish were still around. Your not the "Average Infantry Man". Your way better. Infantry men don't know about planes..........👍👍👍👍

They do the depot maintenance on these at Tinker in OKC. I was attached the 552nd in support of the E-3. When they did engine run ups you would swear Satan himself was over there. About a half mile from our tarmac. Don’t let the size of this thing fool you. Those GE engines are unbelievable. I used to watch them on test flights do a check and go without the check. 50 feet off of the runway they would take those big bastards darn near 90 degrees with the candles lit. Talk about a sound. Any F-22 or F-15EX would be proud of that move. And they were super maneuverable. I imagine those test pilot adrenaline junkies would barrel roll one if they knew they wouldn’t be permanently grounded. Seeing the moves that they made I have no doubt that aircraft could do it. Whether the air frame would be safe to fly afterwards is debatable. Unbelievable aircraft. Fantastic work on this video. Show my E-3 some love sometime. After all, they said in ‘95 that they would be replaced by satellites by 2000. She ain’t dead yet. The newest ones are in their 40’s. Fine aircraft that 707 is. Maybe Boeing should go back to basics and build them like those. Boeing has door plug’s being sucked out and their spacecraft apparently aren’t worth a damn either.

Great overview! Many years ago, I was living in the country. Was finishing up chores in the back yard one evening and it had gotten dark. Something flew over at a low altitude. Too dark to make out the shape, but as it passed I saw the engine configuration. No question it was a B-1.

These birds can rain hell fire with accuracy that I think would surprise folks, even today when they been in service for a long time. Just 45 airframes times the payload capacity is still a real big ass set of explosions, but accurate explosions at the same time. The weapons keep getting better and the airframe is already pretty much maximized for huge destructive capacity if needed. Cool to know they're still flying.

The B-1 bomber program started in the 70's, not the 80's. They began to be built in the 80's. It's an amazing aircraft. I had the good fortune to do three summer internships in the B1 logistics division of Rockwell International. Our job could be summed up as data cleansing of logistics data entry. Although we knew almost nothing about the details of the plane design and the parts, we were able to identify many issues with the data. We also were seated near many design engineers who could answer our questions. I remember that the data had gotten so bad that the Air Force decided to put together a tiger team to scrub it. Me and a colleague, both interns, had to get our Confidential clearances upgraded to Secret in a week so that we could work all weekend with two Colonels and a General to get it done. I learned so much on those internships. My team was lucky enough to visit Edwards AFB when they only had 4 B-1s, to board one of the planes and get a tour. All the secret avionics had been removed, and that aircraft scheduled to be used as for cannibalizing parts for the two flying planes.

Honestly, "BEAST" seems like more of a backronym, than an acronym (that's where you start with the desired acronym, then try to turn each of the letters into an acronym. It's the reverse process of finding an acronym).
