The colonization of the Moon, the only natural satellite of the Earth, is pre
sent in many movies and science fiction novels: think for example to Arthur C. Clarke who, before becoming famous as a screenwriter with "2001 - A Space Odyssey" together with Stanley Kubrick, wrote "The exploration of the Moon", one of the first novels to propose the construction of a lunar base with scientific criteria, consisting of inflatable modules covered with regolith to isolate them and protect the occupants from radiation.
Now let's see what the problems and real prospects of this incredible adventure are today.
The first problem to be faced to colonize the Moon is to identify a suitable site, which must have the following characteristics:
1) Terrain sufficiently regular to allow surface transport operations, landing and take-off of lunar spaceships
2) A potentially interesting area from a scientific point of view to facilitate study activities without dangerous long transfers
3) Maximum possible availability of natural resources such as water, hydrogen, helium, oxygen and minerals of industrial interest such as iron oxides
• Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) is a module with a weight of 8-9 t designed to produce 50 kW of electricity through photovoltaic panels and provide ion propulsion. On May 23rd, 2019, the assignment of construction to Maxar Technologies was announced and it will constitute the first module of the station.
• European System Providing Refueling, Infrastructure and Telecommunications (ESPRIT) will contribute to the storage of xenon and hydrazine, as well as providing a docking point for any cargo. It will be designed in parallel by Airbus and Thales Alenia Space.
• Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO), made in the US, will provide additional space and form the initial housing module, leading to 55m³ of living space. It will be based on a Cygnus spacecraft, with the additions of radiators, antennas, batteries and docking points, providing support for the crew for at least a month. The construction of the module was entrusted in July 2019 to Northrop Grumman, which, for the production of the Cygnus, collaborates with Thales Alenia Space, operating in the pressurized sections.
• International Habitation Module (I-HAB) is part of the habitation module during manned missions and is a docking point for other modules. It has a cylindrical shape with the addition of four doors, two in axis and two radial, and for the absence of space waste in the cis-lunar area, less thick walls are sufficient. Inside there will be sleeping, kitchen and a gym. It will be designed in parallel by Airbus and Thales Alenia Space. At the ESA ministerial conference in Seville, an order worth 327 million euros was awarded for the module, 137 million of which for Italian returns.
• U.S. Habitation Module (U.S. HAB) forms the US part of the station's housing module, reaching 125m3 of living space.
• Gateway Logistics Modules will be used as refueling modules. The project provides for a pressurized load capacity of 5 t and 2.6 t of non-pressurized, for a total of 7.6 t (in comparison the Cygnus and the ATV reach 3.5 t and 9 t).
• Gateway Airlock Module will act as an airlock for any spacewalks and will be provided by Russia.

A Lunar Space Elevator would also be far more possible than one on Earth, plus give us construction insight when the proper technology becomes readily viable for use to build one on Earth. Similar to how the Space Stations we have built around Earth can tell us how to build Space Stations around the Moon, which is still quite far away to travel to. Hopefully we can build these systems soon, not letting this drag out since we likely cannot count on continued Russian engagement in such endeavors.

The moon does not spin in relation to the earth. it is tidally locked. That means that only very few places on the moon will see earthrise because of seasonal variations in the moons orbit. The majority of the moon will either see the earth or not see it.
@Zacharysharkhazard

The moon does wiggle a little bit, so at spots near the lunar South Pole you should be able to witness the earth go slowly over and under the horizon.

@@Zacharysharkhazard true. Also, if I remember correctly, the orbit of the moon is not exactly aligned with the earth sun solar plane.

Whenever I think of the idea of colonizing the moon, my mind can't help but think of how cities were built in the anime girls last tour in which cities were built in some sort of levels and the inhabitants live in a sort of confine environment. I wonder if one day, if ever humanity manage to land on the moon and build the first habitats, as they expand on the lunar surface, they can apply the same concept of city building as the anime albeit a more confine version as, obviously, the moon had no atmosphere whatsoever thus the layers or levels of city should be air tight and were connected on the surface by some sort of self contained channels or subway systems. Its simply mind tickling to think of such scenario... 😊
@torreeric499
@torreeric499 Год назад
P. S. Had humanity manage to discover the secret behind artificial gravity, the human race would've been one step closer at becoming a multi planetary species. Just overcoming this single obstacle can have a huge impact on the field of space exploration. 😊

Using a mixture of gallium’ aluminum’ and water, all can be found and liberated from the surface of the moon, to make hydrogen using the Grotthuss mechanism with very little power output. Also, after the reaction of the aluminum two the gallium and water the gallium is available for reuse.

Why not apply Dyson sphere theory to enclosing the Moon? A modified Dyson, incremental, in some transparent to still receive light on the surface. A skin where ships could dock. Other ideas?

Glass making moon place have it material
@owenwilson25
@owenwilson25 Год назад
At first you find a lava tube NOT too big, Lave tubes are NOT very solid, Lunar lava tubes are very undisturbed for the past 4 billion years - careful calculations have to be made to estimate the carrying load of their ceilings ; in any event they would need re-enforcement as human habitats. So the first tube settlement needs to be small enough for the expedition to be able to convert to a structurally safe site. On the surface you construct some habitats with windows and egress access to the underground habitats that house the manufacture factories and hydroponic farms that enjoy about 15 days sun-light via light tubes filtered through glass to remove the UV, followed by 15 days of LED lighting. In addition to producing food, telescope mirrors & lenses, the factories need to manufacture building materials for any Lunar or orbital structures that are wanted. Over time the manufacture/farm base can diversify and extend throughout any tubes deemed suitable, each supporting occasional above ground posts/egress points.

It will require underground cities. Huge Solar arrays on the rim that always face the sun. To power the drilling and to melt the walls, floors and ceilings to impervious glass, the only local building material. Daily exercise routines to maintain bone density which will be long and intense. Which means only healthy, fit adults (no babies) can live there. Get really sick and you're fired, back to Earth. It can be done, it should be done as a platform for Space exploration. All life-giving chemicals have to be 100% recycled (oxygen, water, nutrients, etc.) A thousand years from now we may find we are accelerating the moon's escape from our gravity if we develop it just to exploit it, as we have done on Earth. The other problem is return transport re-entry. To date we use distance-eating speed (which will be provided by electro-magnetic launch ramps) and heat panels. That will have to be rethought, by rocket braking and entering our upper atmosphere at speeds closer to 160kph, enabling early deployment of controllable parachutes - to choose landing sites.

We should NEVER colonise it. Firstly a bare unspoilt moon is central to our culture. Simply just aesthetically. But there are cultures like Muslims and Jews for instance who use it to base their lunar calendar. It's also so crucial to navigation in remote regions for the world and for nocturnal animals. As well as it's gravitational pull on the earth affecting our climate. We humans need to learn to just leave things alone!! At the minimum maybe have an observatory. Even then on the dark side of it so as to not pollute our view of space on death. But LEAVE IT AT THAT!!
