Google started switching their phones to USB-C in 2015, with Samsung following suit in 2016. So why did it take Apple until 2023 to switch the iPhone to USB-C on the 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max?
Thank you for not even humouring the idea that Apple had any other reasons to change out of lightning. The reasons they mentioned are real advantages, but they would have happily stuck with lightning if the EU had not told them to change.
Except it’s not true, they stuck with the port to not piss off their customers. And they promised to keep it for ten years. Time is finally up, the EU was just circumstantial. In fact, Apple raced to invent USB-C when the consortium and governments were seriously going to enforce everyone to adopt… micro USB. Thank goodness Apple responded quickly, and gifted their new port to the entire industry.
@@brentdennison176that’s only true at the beginning, apple keep it because it made them money and the way they are acting they are clearly pissed they were forced to switch
If they did it for those reasons they would have done years ago, when the standard was established and was just as good as lighting at that point already. Plus, Tim Cook himself said in an interview not long ago that they don’t approve of USB C for every phone just to meet a standard but that they would abide the law if it passed. Obviously Cook didn’t suddenly change his opinion, and Apple only mentioned the new port very briefly in their presentation. They clearly hate this.
@@brentdennison176Tim Cook begrudgingly said in an interview that Apple doesn’t see a reason to switch ports after all this time but that they would have to abide EU law. There was never any indication that Apple wanted to switch. Especially since they make a lot of buck with their proprietary port as any accessory sold will share a margin of profit with them.
What doesn’t make sense is Apple going to USB-C with their MacBooks in 2016, iPad Pro in 2018 and Air in 2020. Then having the iPhone on lightning until now
USB-C would later appear on their low-end iPad from 2021. I have an iPad Pro 2021 (the one with the M1 chip), and that having USB-C allow me to connect my iPad to the computer using the same cable that connects my graphics tablet to the computer. Which means one less cable to worry about.
Yeah, once they went USB-C on their iPads it made no sense anymore to not do it with the iPhone as customers equally had the same issue with iPad in needing to switch to new USB-C accessories. Even their iPad Mini 6, which is like a large phone, switched to USB-C, making any of the arguments against USB-C redundant
It makes sense once you realize Apple took a huge public hit for forcing lightning onto everyone who had zero lightning cables in 2012, and felt motivated to fulfill their promise (stated on-stage aloud) for lightning to be their iPhone port for the next decade. Here we are ten years later, right on time. USB-C was actually invented by Apple engineers and was clearly planned from the outset to be the standard Mac port, then eventually on more mobile products.
Imagine being one of the first companies to transition your computers to USB C but it took legislation in an overseas territory to force you to transition your phones. Madness.
I hate Apple. The funny thing is I didn't even know or care to look up what the name of those ports were cuz I assumed they were just an original Apple port. I know none of the people I knew that had that Mac knew what it was called. lmao I just knew they weren't the standard USB port so you would be forced to buy a lot of extra accessories. Now knowing that they were USB-C ports is actually so cool that they did that.
I’m glad Apple was FINALLY forced to change from their lightning port to USB-C in iPhones. It was ridiculous because MacBooks (some) and iPads were already using USB-C for quite a few years. I just wanted to be able to use a single connector for all my devices 😂
well people are silly. if Pc did it no one would buy them...buy apple seems special... by that I mean they cant constant scew things up and not take samage from it because, well people buy em anyway.... I guess thats why the ppl like me who jknow how bad they are stay away from em... they're glorified calculaters when put against pc AND they 6x more expensive.... my pc an run any current software.. yet there's cant... partially incompatibly, part its not capable
You havent heard anything because there so blind they will buy anything from and with an apple logo. The i-underwear with tim cooks line of peanut butter they will buy it.
@@giovannibucioPeople already have USB C cables for none-Apple products and even some Apple products that use it. That is the reason. Not every customer is an "Apple sheep"
I keep all my cables. I never throw them away. I still own a 30-pin iPod connector from 2012 and I still own a DVD SuperDrive, because you'll never know when they'll come in handy. So in ten years' time, I may still own a lightning to USB 3.0 cable.
@@MrPasqual1 Thank you for that. I think the levels we’re talking about aren’t what’s happening in my life. I throw away pieces of items that I no longer use. Except cables of course, which I’m sure you know, contributes to the ever-growing e-waste problem.
@@YourAverageSpeedrunnerWell Samsung sends with each phone small usb-c to normal usb ( no idea what it's called) adapter, they could do the same with their stuff 😁
@@matijasteficar3046 I never thought of that. They could have had that small free accessory around and all systems go( except for fast data transfer speeds)
@@MartinRusnak I know that companies calculate things in mass volume in terms of cost, but those things for them to make don't cost manufactures much to include for an individual. For whatever reason there isn't much give and take when it deals with companies and their loyal customers anymore.
That's true. I use a magsafe charger at night and in the car to charge my s23 ultra. The s23 ultra has fast wireless charging and at night it doesn't matter if it's slower than thr USB c.
I have to admit, I use magnetic USB adapters on my mobile devices (Adroid and ChromeBook.) They aren't "MagSafe" but they do the same thing. Most USB ports are designed to wear out after so many plug-in/plug-out attempts. (Around 8,000 or there'a'bouts), and that's my reason for using them. Though you do need to look for the right cables that support fast charging AND are magnetic.
Seriously what's the logic here? I why should I spend extra to extract rare earth metals just to support another piece of tech which could have been easily supported by existing solutions and even at some cases, work at it's optimum capacity? And what if my office gets me a work device and not for personal use. Let's say development and deployment uses, the entire office will have to discard perfectly working equipment causing disruption in product life cycle and making unnecessary e-wastes. Why should not one be worries/complaining about old chargers/cables?
If you get the new iPhone 15 Pro models you still have to buy another cable to get the full 10 Gb/s speed. The cable that comes in the box limits you to USB 2.0 speeds.
And the majority of users won't need 10 GB/s speeds so unless you are a professional videographer, it's not something most users will have to worry about. And anyone who does need one more than likely already uses a Thunderbolt cable for external drives on their Macs so won't need to buy a new cable
@@zampoloo iPhone 15 models have speeds up to 480 MB/s (USB 2.0), and iPhone 15 Pro models have speeds up to 10 Gb/s (USB 3.1). However, all models will come with a USB 2.0 compliant cable.
@@loughrey101 Very true, but I wish Apple would be more transparent with this information. They currently list the cable as "USB‑C Charge Cable" . If you are not tech savvy you would assume this cable would transfer data at the speed the phone advertises.
The worst part about Apple keeping with Lightening for so long wasn't the fact that it was different, like most things they do. It was that they didn't update the spec the entire lifespan to introduce faster data transfer rates and power delivery. It was totally possible, it is just an interface, and in the same time Apple did NOTHING in the regard, USB-C kept getting faster and faster transfer speed and power delivery, spec after spec. All using the same connector. This was Apple's real failure.
Until you find out 2017 iPad Pro has the same lightning speed as current USB-C inside of iPhone 15 Pro. They could introduce iPad Pro's lightning 3.0 speeds on at least iPhone 13 "Pro" which has ProRes support, but they refused it so what we can do lol
@@MissionControlTet I didn't even know that, but I knew it was possible as my post was suggesting. Now the fact that they DID IT ALREADY but limited it to the iPad is even funnier, holy crap lmao
@AppleExplained Do you know why the iPhone 15 Pro came with such a futuristic settings menu for the Action Button? Maybe it’s related to a whole new Settings redesign.
That's never happened to me on any device except my MacBook. I know that TikTok builds up absurd caches and data for storage on the phone; try deleting and re-downloading it if you have it
@@wasylbasyl I'm not sure about looks, but water resistance shouldn't be a problem, since some phones with a removable battery still managed to have good water resistance back then
I think it's fair to say that it's still "late" for Apple to do the switch no matter what the incentive was. USB-C has been a standard for at least 5 years now. The fact that it took 5 years since USB-C was standardized in the industry, for Apple to change the port out is not consumer friendly. Consumer friendly is appropiating your product to the arleady existing market. Waiting out with an inferior and outdated port, which licensing YOU OWN is a monetary decision and not user experience decision.
One other reason for sticking to Lighting was mechanical design: Lightning on the cable side is just a solid slab, more robust than the "hollow" USB-C, and has rounded corners to facilitate blind insertion. The Lightning port on the device is just a hole, while the port on USB is a hole with a center "slab", which might be less robust. There used to be docks that kept the weight of the iphone on the connector alone.
@@kayatinsI guess because Apple doesn’t thought these scenario will happen at home. I believe they should do a magnetic ring outside of the usb-c port, so blind insertion is possible again and they can once again charge fee for a ‘magnetic usb’ cable
@@kayatins On Macbooks USB-C made a lot of sense: it's thinner than USB-A, it supports thunderbolt, display port and everything else on a single connector, it was going to be the industry standard so it was just natural to have it. The first iPad to have USB-C was the ipad Pro, this makes sense for the same reasons it was added to the macbook. For phones, it was going to happen sooner or later anyways once you start adding that to ipads, economy of scale starts to work in favour, technically they could probably have improved lightning to make it faster but overall the convenience of using USB-C everywhere is superior to have a "better" mechanical connector... Wondering why USB-C connector was not done the other way around though, more similar to Lightning
@@QnjtGWonQNqVsbYyzjx4 at least we have magsafe back on macbooks, I can't imagine going back to a "standard" plug for power, magsafe is so much better :D
You may want to mention that the EU tried to make micro USB a default at one point. Apple released a micro USB to lightning adapter for the EU. I bought it and use it with a micro USB cable.
@@mirzarizwanbaig9449 Unfortunately, in the legal realm "cable(s)" doesn't not equate to "connector(s)" of which USB type-C is a connector. And if the law was so lax that new connectors were automatically allowed it would defeat the supposed purpose of the law - eliminate the need for different chargers/cables for different devices.
Apple tricked the EU into enforcing USB-C instead of micro-USB which is what was originally planned. It’s sad tech media has more interest in telling a good story about government, and not the facts: Apple engineers created USB-C and allowed the industry to adopt the technology, benefiting everyone.
Just wonder how long until they remove the port entirely. They were basically forced to do this, so I’d imagine it’s not much longer until MagSafe is the new Lightning.
With how much pros rely on fast video transfer (which they’re literally promoting as a benefit with these phones) and all sorts of important shit pros and general users rely on, there is NO WAY they’d make the phone port-less, at least for the next 5-10 years. Plus, they’ll need to have a solution in place to remedy this, like when Apple removed the headphone jack, and they had AirPods available right then and there.
Does anyone know the answer to the question? Will the USB-C mandate only apply to device models first introduced after the law goes into effect, or all devices sold after the law takes effect regardless of generation?
Ah yes another android fanboy with the “omg apple is so expensive” bro the iPhone 15 pro is $999 and the Samsung galaxy S23 Ultra is $1499 bro y’all android fanboys are dumb lol
So what about the older Iphone models? As far as i understood they arent allowed so sell devices without usb-c in 2024. So can they still sell the old models?
They can still sell them, just not make them. Basically those witch ware made before the law stops it can be still sold, but models made after the law took the place can not. By the time the law kick in, however, the manufacturing of iPhones 14 should be done anyway and if not, Apple probably ships the remaing models to another parts of the world where the law doesn' exist
@@lonxyon3715 Depending on the context of your question, the answer varies. If you're referring to brand new models after the legislation takes effect, then yes, Apple won't be able to sell iPhones with Lightning ports in the EU. However, the resale of second-hand phones will remain unaffected by the port type. For Apple to continue selling the iPhone 14 in the EU, they would need to retrofit or redesign these models to incorporate a Type-C port. However, such a move seems improbable. Given that the law will come into effect in the summer of 2024, Apple has ample time to clear their inventory and minimize potential losses.
Personally, I'm glad they made the switch to a standard connector. They should have switched the iphone to USB C back in 2017 when the X came out. Would have been the best time to do it since they moved to the new design. Better now then never I guess.
1:08 No, It's just more practical, nothing more. When you bought the devices, the cable was always included, you never had to buy one. No electronic waste is avoided now because you still get the same number of cables with every new device
1:47 these customers would just have to sell these electronic accessories on eBay or something to some other owners who still have lightning enabled Apple devices!!
When my computer, steam deck, switch, earphones, and every other accessory I got uses type-c except my iPhone, it’s kinda crappy. I have 20 type c cables and 1 lightning
As EU going to take action with MFI, new strategy is they let you use all cables freely and ruin your $1,199+ stuff which ultimately, you need to pay more than the MFI Cables 😂😂
On some level waiting on this change may be kinda beneficial. Less backlash for switching from consumers and investors and they've potentially switched to a connector that's more broadly used across their product lines. Potentially saving some money and complexity due to economy of scale kicking in.
So glad they're making Apple comply with something since all they ever try to do is be different an unreasonable. USB-C has always been faster than anything Apple had to offer anyway.
Actually this narrative reasoning was created by the media from whole cloth. Apple invented this port, and always intended to include it on the iPhone ten years after the “5” and here we are.
Everyone talks about how a good of a change is that. Just NO! How is it going to reduce waste of cables if now people already are or will be forced to switch from lightning to stupid USB-C and buy new cables? Lightning connector was more durable as well, entire time of me having a iPhone previously it never failed and that certainly wasn't the case of "charge only while not using it and in one spot" USB-C on the other hand - harder to clean, more fragile, now I can't leave it charging because it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. Transfer speeds doesn't bother me and probably won't a regular consumer either.
Can't wait until 2027 when the new EU law will force every smartphone manufacturer to have phones with removable batteries! Just like the good old days! Also an iPhone with removable battery by 2027! Thank you EU!
I just got an iPhone 15 and I love being able to charge it with USB-C! As a bonus, my spare charging cord is able to charge Lightning, USB-C or micro-USB.
Well. I have an iPhone and I mean I’m not complaining about lightning, but I just use it because my AirPods and phone still use it. Everything else uses USB-C
thing is they could of used usb c in 2012 in the first place if they wanted too things don't get created over night they could of looked into upcoming standers but apple wanted to have a mfi certification to make money out of each lightning made by other companies and I think the reason why the iPhone was the only device left out of the main stuff like Macs and iPads to still use it was we lose cables we go though headphones etc and its our main device we can't live without so while on vacation we are more likely to buy another lighting cable while on a trip while most people would probably not care as much for an iPad to buy another cable if it was forgotten! im sure apple users has many many lighting cables that didn't come in the box just because they needed a backup or spare! also apple cables tend to fall apart or get super nasty quickly so people. will replace them often! and since it had to be mfi supported otherwise it can't talk though the cable and charge correctly or deta transfer you'll more likely get a name brand one rather a random gas station one like a usb c you could get away with! also iPads was used as a school laptop of sorts so having a common cable in that case made more sense as well since iPads are used as kids laptops and now the iPad pros support storage transfer at thunderbolt. also unlike iPads iPhones have expensive media docks and amps they can be set to I remember many people complaining their home audio system was not working correctly even with a 30pin to lighting so they had to get new one or a workaround! so apple probably enjoys the revenue from the audio docks and such like that the most!
This is a major reason why my latest iPhone purchase was the 14 Plus and not the 15 in any version. I have all lightning cables and am not throwing them away.
People who are complaining about the switch. We've had lighting for 10 years. We were due for another switch. And if you really care about accessories. Just get a USB-C to Lighting adapter. May as well get the extra accessory.
My USB-C devices at my home -GoPro Hero 11 -DJI Mini 2 drone -MacBook Pro -iPad 10th generation -Dell Precision 5560 Even Android phones are USBC. Lightning seems a bit uncommon.
Thought part of the delay was performance… lightening faster than usb-c initially? Love the brevity but would like some insight into speed… phone, port, cable limits.speed relative to photo & video transfers.
Acctually USB C tend to be faster, but both USB type C and lighting are pretty much came cables, only the plug is diffrent. Lighting still uses the USB protocol so the speeds could be matched with no problem
@@sethfeldpausch4337 True but I don't use Lightning for data transfer since... three years I think. Just a backup running overnight once in a while. YMMV of course but the thirst for data transfer on cable connection is not so common with wireless connections being so ubiquitous.
Then how will you transfer photos/data from your phone to PC. You can't do it if there is no ports in the phone. Plus you need iTunes in case you want to restore your phone if you forgot your phone password and for resetting the iPhone you need to connect it to your pc with the wire.
