Why are 5KW stoves different sizes

So many ranges of stoves have the 5 and then maybe the widescreen version, or:
wide
plus
slimline
XL
XL wide
So many versions of a 5KW stove, why is this and which one should I go for???
You will "hopefully" find the answers in this video

Interesting, bizarrely makes sense and the opposite of what most manufacturers usually do. 🤔👍

We have just bought a 5k stove and we told the agent that we have plenty of wood so put a large one in so we bought without seeing it and on installing it I was concerned about it’s small size and i should of sent it back but we kept it,we need such small logs to put in it so if anyone is thinking of buying it don’t get caught out like we did but on a good note it does give out a lot of heat

At Last , i managed to be the 100th Like :) , this was an informative vid , and Mrs Tortoise was very disruptive , that made it fun 😄 i looked into that size thing befor i bought , i just ignored every thing and went for the biggist output , if it gets to hot i open the door to the room , but yes i am putting in an air vent . and yes i did watch the two vids you pointed at .

We are in mid install and are trying to decide on a good stove. Presently looking at a Fireline Woodtec 5 to fit the space available. Like most things you look at online reviews are variable in they love it or hate it. Very frustrating.

I am in conversation with that company, but they have been struggling with keeping up with demand. I’d like to use it before I can be sure what I think. I’m hoping to avoid being too love it/hate it, but having tested each one the same way it does hopefully make the reviews fairly reliable.

Love your videos Gabriel! I am definitely in the category of not wanting to install an airbrick since I'd need to go through a massive chimney. Therefore, a 5kW wood burner is what I'm interested in. The room is 5m x 5m x 3m (high) and already has underfloor heating. The main thing I'm after is actually the flame effect and a big opening to see it on. I'm looking at Clock and Burley Fireball series - but haven't seen any reviews from you on those. Any plans to do one? Also, are there any others that you recommend I should look at for the best flame effect?

I’m definitely planning a review of the clock, just haven’t got there yet. If it is mostly about look then what you like the look of is obviously very important. Flame wise Heta, Charnwood and Clearview were all fantastic. I haven’t checked the Clock, but the best I’ve seen is the Heta. The trick to amazing flames is getting the stove very hot and then reducing the air, stoves without grates tend to be best. The puts the clock and Clearview at a disadvantage, but the Clearview has the advantage of not clouding the glass like most modern appliances. It’s also worth noting that all stoves will perform best if they have a removeable DEFRA kit or no DEFRA kit at all.

Does the output not dictate the liner size? I have a 6.5 kw morso owl, and its specced for a 6 inch liner. Do those extra 1.5 kw really mean a 5 inch would not cope? I have been told by the sweep it would be hard to fit a 6 inch liner.
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise Год назад
It is in part output, but the shape of the stove is also a seriously contributing factor. The Owl has a 6” outlet so you have no legal choice it must be fitted on 6”. But for example a Heta Ambition 5 is 5kw has a 5” outlet and is approved for a 5” flue, but due to its baffling set up and wide shape it works far better on a 6” flue than a 5. If I remember correctly anything above 7kw total nominal output, regardless of outlet size or DEFRA approval, must be fitted on at least a 6” flue. The issue with the Owl is legally it could of been made for 5”, but it wasn’t. Morso removed that choice by fitting a 6” outlet and unfortunately there is no way of reducing flue size (it’s also not going to pass building regs and can be dangerous).

Hi Gabriel, I have the Holborn 5 widescreen and love it, after watching your video here I checked the specs of the Holborn 7 and noticed it is on the same flue and has the exact same stove dims, the heat bricks look the same too, are there any significant differences between these 2 from an output point of view? thanks!
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise Год назад
The only difference is that the 5 widescreen has thicker side bricks. Other than that, they’re the same. In terms of output they are essentially the same.
@leesays7223
@leesays7223 Год назад
Are the Holborn 7 and 5 fire brick assemblies interchangeable (wider throat plate required also I presume) Sorry for all the questions, thanks so much 😊
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise Год назад
@@leesays7223 I’m sure physically it is very easy to convert a 5 into a 7 or vice versa. But I’m also sure that the manufacturer will not condone that, and there will almost certainly be legal issues with that too.

Gabriel! Emergency question. Allure 07. Nominally 5Kw but every bit of advertising suggests it's for med to large rooms. Would it cope with an averagely insulated, 6mx5mx2.5m room with two french doors?
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise Год назад
Yes, this is about the right size. If you plan to just use it for the evening, then it will need running on the hotter side, but otherwise it’ll be great.

Have you seen the ecosy range? Any plans on doing a review of one?
@TheTortoise
@TheTortoise Год назад
I’m going to have to take a look, because I’ve been asked a few times to. I’ve shied away from them, because of the large number of warranty claims I’ve heard of and that their warranty was reduced because of the large number of claims. I’d like to do a long term test to see whether I have any issues in this area.

That's stupid. Basically what you are saying is that the manufacturers can lie about the output. That doesn't make sense. I've seen you, yourself Gabriel, use similar wood packs to test stoves so why can't they standardise the industry?
