Why are Americans choosing to quit their jobs in record numbers? 

Most employers expect loyalty, but offer none in return.

More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

I've worked in retail for 20 years, so I'm quite happy that this is taking place. For too long, retail bullied me and a lot of my employees, telling us things like, "If you don't like it, go; another like you is waiting to get into your position." Since the virus, I've found a dream job that helps me grow, pays me more, and values me!

Went to school for a year to learn web design, then found out that companies wanted to pay me $10 an hour to design and code - two different skill sets. Why don't you do a series on how people are forced to live on little pay and few hours. People are tired of being abused for peanuts.

It's not a lack of employee problem, it's a lack of respect and pay problem.

This is a piece about Workers but it doesn’t interview a single worker? And this piece doesn’t address the fact that most Americans feel their employers don’t really care about their interests.

I think a big part of the dissatisfaction with employers is that most of them do not fully understand what their employees actually do and how they do it. They assign unreasonable and unrealistic goals that frustrate their people because they don’t understand what it takes to accomplish those goals.

I'm a senior citizen that recently applied for a job (65 applications)! Out of 65, I was offered 1 interview which I attended but did not get the job. I am college educated, but feel very much undervalued because of my age. Some of us want to work but can't find an employer to hire us.

I've worked in the food industry since I was 16, I am 30 now. I've never been offered a management position or any other kind of supervisory role so I opened my own restaurant in 2020. I got tired of being overlooked so I took my fellow co-workers and gave them a job at my restaurant with great pay, great benefits and I really did for them what my former jobs refused to do which is giving them "respect". So far I've had not one employee leave my business.

1.) Not enough compensation 2.) Power crazed managers with psychological problems who treat staff like sh*** 3.) Companies that expect staff to do the work of 3-5 people.

American workers are experiencing unprecedented declines in their real incomes, which is why record numbers have been forced to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. When we talk about 9.1% inflation, the media acknowledged the true rate of inflation of about 18%?

They missed one of the biggest pieces of this entire issue. Toxic work place behaviour/environments. People are being fed up with being treated like garbage by their employers so they leave. Those that leave are among the most courageous people. They are taking the power away from their abusers and saying "No More!"

I quit my job because someone I worked with died on the floor at work. The company gave everyone 30 minuets off... 30 minuets... And then everyone was told to get back to work. That employee had been there for 15 yrs. I've since started my own business and never been happier. Companies want us to break our backs for them but want to treats us like expendable garbage. Given a choice, why would anyone want to work for that?

I remember struggling to work with a severe case of strep. 105⁰ fever, couldn't eat, couldn't sleep and, given my ill health, I wasn't able to think clearly at all. Yet I had to go in to my job in which I was responsible for children because my boss didn't take me seriously when I said I was sick. This is just an example, there are more. Started my own business during covid and haven't looked back.

I quit my job December 2021 after starting my own business in Dec 2020. My office job was toxic with low pay. My manager and middle manager were both lazy. No recognition when you performed well, but definitely received feedback when you made a mistake.

Until you've worked in retail or dealt with the public, you'll never have a clue about how stressful it is dealing with arrogant, self absorbed, holier than thou, egotistical, self entitled people. And then there's the managers who treat you the same way.

Having worked in retail, hospitality, and other service-sector jobs, none of this is surprising to me. It's not a worker problem, it's an employer problem. Employers want robots, not workers.

I was looking for a job. Got an interview but they complained I haven't worked for a while so they didn't want to hire me. Like geez I wonder why places are understaffed. People are looking for jobs but employers just don't want them and now they are crying and whining about not having enough employees.

It will keep increasing if they don't increase workers wages. Most times it amaze me greatly the way I moved from an average lifestyle to earning over $63k per month, utter shock is the word. I have understood a lot in the past few years to doubt that opportunities are bound in the financial markets, The only thing is to know where to focus.

I quit my job about 4 months back. I was working sixteen hours a day six days a week. Making really good money. Unfortunately my dad passed away and my job did not want to give me time off. I decide for my mental health and we'll being to leave the job. They tried to convince me to stay but I knew they didn't care about me at all. It was in my best interest to leave.

There's no "Worker" shortage. There's "Good Wage" shortage and "Healthy Work Environment" shortage and "Respectful Employer" shortage.

The most important thing that should be on everyone mind currently should be to invest in different sources of income that doesn't depend on the government. Especially with the current economic crisis around the word. This is still a good time to invest in various stocks, Gold, silver and digital currencies.

People are tired of employers low pay, high taxes, not being treated well, it's about time people stood up.

I quit my job because I was expected to work 16 - 26 hours (yes, I realize that 26 is longer than an actual day) long in an extremely nice hotel as a restaurant manager. My venue was the most profitable square footage of the entire hotel, not too far from all the “attractions” in Orlando. It’s embarrassing what companies expect. I lasted 6 months, and lost 25 pounds.

After decades of treating workers like absolute garbage, this is the price that has to be paid. You did it to yourselves.

They are seriously ignoring the fact that people are quitting because the average workspace is hostile to mental and/or physical health and yet doesn't pay enough to live on.

60 minutes should do a real story on the criminality of the property tax and how it is destroying affordable housing and causing families to lose their homes.

I will say, when I worked in a grocery store during the heart of the pandemic. It would annoy me that people were bring home more money staying at home, then what I made a week in the frontline of covid. I thought of quitting for that reason.

Employers spent years after the 2008 crash just stripping everything from employees: benefits, reasonable hours, pay increases (even for inflation) -- it's been disgusting. And when the pandemic hit, employers didn't even care if people died. And now they have the nerve to call people lazy. 😠

Those quitting are police, nurses, and other public and military people. Politicians will NEVER see the truth.

I recently quit my job at Walgreens for the same reason. I was working 40 hours a week for $15 an hour. My manager told me that I would be doing the job of three people. When I said I should be getting paid more than $15 an hour, her response was “You have to earn more than $15 an hour.” Who can afford an apartment on $15 an hour?

I was one of the workers laid off on 2020 which is not the way I thought that year would go. I was provided severance and had started saving money prior to COVID just in case bc I had been laid 3x before this. So thankful for my time off bc I was so burnt out. I thought I took my time I’m finding a new position but it’s slowly turning into the same nightmare. If you are not working don’t let anybody force you or make you feel guilty about not jumping back into the workforce! Most people are jealous they are not able to do it themselves. I would like to take a more planned break in 2 more years.

This is making me really see the silver lining to Covid. It made many people reevaluate their lives at work and move on to a less stressful and more appreciated place in life! At least those that were blessed to do so...

Here in America employees are guilted for not covering every missed shift, guilted for taking sick days, guilted for taking breaks, guilted for taking a full lunch hour, guilted for taking vacation and when they do take vacation wonder if they have a job when they get back.

This really isn't that complicated. Employers have given their employees a raw deal with no respect or loyalty. Wages have not kept up with inflation for decades and it is only getting worse. People are recognizing how awful the job markets truly are thanks to the pandemic and are figuring out they can make their own company or find a better job. Companies have focused on their own revenue rather than the ethics and principles they operate on and this is the result. Not to mention how difficult it is for the youth to get off the ground, they see these 'careers' as a dead end paycheck to paycheck life and they are opting out of this broken economy. When people can not afford to buy a home and live a life from their job then they are not going to be loyal to their job. How is this difficult to understand?

The problem is you go to college and earn a very expensive degree and put in a massive amount of work to do well and then you get out of college and realize you're only gonna make 17 or $18 an hour and you can't survive on that in today's society especially if you have to travel miles to your job pay for your mortgage your car payment water sewage garbage Internet phone food medical and who knows how many other bills

Another point is daycare costs almost as much as your weekly paycheck. So why wouldn’t you just stay home and be with your kid instead of working and blowing all the money anyway?

"Hiring for entry level job today!" "Must have 10-15 years experience and 5 certifications from 5 different countries" "$10.00/hour with future growth to $12.00 if you prove yourself in 5 years!" "Must be able to stand for 12 hours straight and any vacation or sick request will be half an occurrence" No one applies "OH MAN, these unemployed lazy people just DON'T want to work anymore!"

I wonder why? Let's see...no benefits; such as insurance, paid vacation (even minimal), less than 40 hours even though being "full time" IF you get that option, minimal or no paid sick leave, retail open 24/7 with NO holiday pay on national holidays if you are scheduled to work that day, leave blackouts during peak business days (apparently, workers have no family or friends to spend and enjoy their holiday season), no overtime, working with minimal support in terms of manpower, working with unqualified co-workers (who are priveledged due to favoritism), crappy work hours...did I miss anything? It sucks that we are forced to take any job when we are out of a job and have bills to support. Once you get a job, you're playing catch-up and try to build a cash reserve...which, in most cases, is impossible to do when you work for minimum wage. It's a catch-22 for a lot of people trying to break out of the mold...as it turns out, you need money to make money...

Employers are in denial. Employers expect loyalty from employees. Yet the employer is not loyal to the employee.

I like how they barely bothered asking anyone who _actually left their job_ about why people are resigning, and instead chose to interview employers, business owners, and founders who have no idea what is actually going on

60 Minutes failed to mention AGEISM. So many companies are crying with their databases full of older, experienced, educated, ideal candidates that they refuse to hire. It is highly frustrating and sickening!

I am a woman, I don't miss my parents or my children, I want a better pay, a safe working environment, no more toxic employers.

Leading into the pandemic, I was a one-man department and heavily burned out. I asked my employer to keep my position remote, as my productivity was up, and my stress was way down. They declined. Within two weeks, I had found a permanently remote job that paid 60% higher. I’ve never been happier with my employment. My old company? They had to shut down the program I left because they couldn’t replace me, according to my friends who still work there.

Loving how they make it into a big mystery : pay workers more, pay your shareholders, middle management and CEOs less and show everyone more respect - the end.

If COVID-19 taught you one thing, it's that life is short so go after a better job with less stress & move if you have to. Peace of mind means everything. People in the service industry, receive little respect - know what they go through to get respect.

It really turns out that no one is hiring because we’re all applying like crazy but not getting called back.

I believe people realized how bad their employers actually are, when they needed time off to care for children and families. Not enough sick time, paid time off, etc.

Look at health care workers, they were hailed hero's during COVID on the front lines daily working short,crazy hours, then told if they didn't get the 💉 they would be fired...Who treats ppl like that? Sickening I hope everyone that walked away never has to go back!

I've read several of the comments and I agree with many. I taught in the public schools for 32 years, in that time I've seen many of the changes that were mentioned in this video, and how difficult it has been for our teachers to adapt to them. It's more than just teacher pay, the pandemic, etc. that is causing the crisis. If you teach in a large urban area you have many challenges. The burnout rate is higher in these areas, but it has gotten harder to teach anywhere. I spent all of my years in these kinds of schools, so I was fortunate to have made it as long as I did. I would say the issues I began facing in the last 5 years leading up to my retirement was this rampant, almost militant evolution of politically correct multiculturalism. I also can't emphasize enough how this has affected classroom management issues teachers have today. Teachers do not have the backing and support of administration and parents to control their classes as they have in the past. If you have students in your class that are constantly disrupting instruction, and there is no will to discipline them, then everyone loses. To give you an example, the district I taught at held inservices for us on our new discipline policy. As time went on, teachers began to complain that students were not being sent to alternative school, detention, home etc. even after very serious infractions, in many cases these same students were back in their classes the same day. Personally I loved being a teacher, but I don't blame anyone for leaving. Public service is difficult.

When I was 19 forty years ago I worked at the local grocery store and had an apartment at $200 a month. I could work, live and figure out life like a young adult needs to be able to do. My 19 year old son can't do that today even if he worked 60 hours a week making $20hr. Young people can't afford the high cost of renting on low wages. Blame Congress and both parties.

No one is calling it “the big quit” it’s “the great resignation” because a generation of workers are tired of being exploited.

Retired early. Exhausted. Did the job of 2 people.Awful employers. All about the MONEY.

Employers refuse to train people without experience for jobs that require no experience to easily learn the job. Start respecting your employees and treat them well. They will come.

Remember hearing, "you're lucky to have a job"? Well, maybe the saying all along should have been "you're lucky to have employees". It's a shame that it took a pandemic for people to learn their worth, value and respect we deserve.

I walked away from my job as a industrial mechanic after I was told I was going to be laid off after moving for the company I worked for. They wanted me to stay around and help train the other people before they laid me off. My boss couldn’t believe I did it. I reopened my drain cleaning and plumbing business and I am extremely happy now. One of the things that is happening I believe is people are waking up and realizing they are sick of being beaten down by corporate America.

It's really not that hard to figure out (low pay, poor benefits, bad work environments, unfulfilling jobs) , and even with people coming back it's begrudgingly if they do. Give people another option, and they will turn on.

Company "We are now requiring you to do the work of 3 people while maintaining quality and safety standards or you will be punished, this is normal. This week you are an essential employee, next week you are being laid off."

"Why are people quitting their jobs?" *Doesn't bother asking people quitting their jobs.*

Finally the American worker knows their value and realizing their health, families, and their purpose is not to serve capitalism of the ultra wealthy but to be in the pursuit of happiness. Good stuff

1. Some employers are gatekeepers. 2. Jobs want to pay employees low salaries knowing that inflation is a thing now. 3. Ridiculous requirements on some of these entry jobs. Why do we need 2-5 years of experience to get onto a entry job. 4. No respect for employee

Flexibility is a red flag key word for no commitment to employees use and discard…. Run!

I just quit my job because of shady business… it’s ridiculous. It was a great job at first… but towards the end, it became toxic….

There’s also a massive termination for not taking the shot that went down from October to December 2021. Including dishonorable discharged military personnel. Let’s do a show about that.

"We doubled our revenue" but I bet they never once offered a pay increase!

I worked in the hospitality industry for over a decade. There is no way I’d go back now. Not because I know my worth or because of wages or “bad” employers but the customers. The ones that come out to eat and drink. People these days are so entitled and are just plain mean and rude!

Not so simple , people just don’t quit, employers are not so interested in keeping employees long term , look at Amazon , when you get experience and work your way up the ladder they get rid of you , Walmart has a computer make your schedule , your hours change each week , what human being wants that , I know many part timers at Walmart that have quit , their hours have been cut to zero , how many companies offer any real retirement ? How many have no choice but to quit their job , and if they are part time never apply for unemployment ? Do they get counted as quitting ? Sure they do but it’s not because they have the cards in their hand it’s because they trying to survive.

What she hasn't spoken about is how companies are combining three and four jobs into ONE, yet they are paying you LESS! I can not count on how many times I've interviewed and have been quoted a salary I earned many years ago, if not my favorite "oh its based on experience and other factors". Right.

Walking away from my job was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I was immediately hired by a better employer who offered benefits and I love going to my new job where I feel respected.

Every day we have a new problem. It's the new normal. At first we thought it was a crisis, now we know it's a new normal and we have to adapt. Now my question, what steps can we take to generate more income during quantitative adjustment? Also, where should we put our invstment money now to better prepare for the future and a liquidity crisis? I can't afford my hard-earned $80,000 savings to turn to dust

There may be millions of jobs open, but they will not reply to inquiries and the majority of the time they won't hire. I applied to nearly 100 jobs before I got 1. And I had experience and a college degree. They don't want to hire. These companies just want the federal benefits.

Bad environment, low pay, employers are demanding more and paying less. I quit my job because I was expected to do the job of 3 people and constantly reprimanded for not being able to keep up. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has gone through this. A lot of businesses, corporations treat their employees like dirt, unimportant. There are way too many managers out there that have absolutely no people skills and are high on a power trip.

Easy answer: Pay your employees a fair wage with benefits. Treat your employees with respect. Pretty easy, RIGHT?

Americans are quiting because they are tired of dealing with rude, entitled, and disrespectful Americans. It's disgusting how people treat each other.

The reason “nobody wants to work“ is because this isn’t the 1960s. Inflation is on the rise and nobody can afford to live on minimum wage let alone $14 an hour. It’s not a livable wage.

This isn’t an employee problem it’s an employer problem

Employers are the problem, their management skills are limited and there is more to having a successful business than the bottom line….it’s taking care of your employees, being fair and generous to them. Example, every business has a sign NOW HIRING, or HELP WANTED…..so you go on line ( the personal interaction is gone ) to apply…..they make you jump thru hoops questioning everything, and guess what….no response, no call back, nothing….nowadays the unprofessional behavior starts at the top…..no wonder good blue collar workers are leaving….and today’s management don’t know how to do the real jobs……

I worked in factories for 45 years and only retired when my health became so bad from degenerate discs in my back I became disabled now only making less than half what I made working I got divorced lost my house became homeless and now live in a shelter in Newark Ohio where I've been waiting on subsidized housing for over two years! They took everything from me then tossed me out when I was no longer of use! There's your America for you kids!

It's become a sick joke when the employer/boss expects employees to pick up the slack when their coworkers quit without paying them overtime or increasing their pay. Instead of rewarding loyal workers who choose to stay these employers are profiteering off of the backs of such workers.

I’ll applaud anybody who can walk away from a terribly toxic job despite the risks involved. I’m surprised that no one talks about poor management and having to watch their every word and action.

The last job I quit they had to hire 2 people to replace me. I left because of low pay stress and not being appreciated. I got another job 4 days later but I'll quit it too when, not if, I don't get a raise after the 3 month probationary period. I've heard the company I just got hired at does not give raises. Guess I'll find out.

I can't get a job!! Office worker willing to cashier, no problem. They don't want to train or see any of my skills as transferable. The system is messed up!

I worked for a major company recently - this company demanded mandatory overtime. If you didn't participate in the mandatory overtime, there would be consequences. I have never seen such a quick turnover at a job. People just said: "forget this!" By the way, the pay was horrible, and there was not enough overtime to break even.

Why were there no minimum wage workers interviewed? Not even one employee of the bosses interviewed? The great resignation is happening at the blue collar level as well, their voices deserve to be heard too.

Because I'm tired of making someone else money and not being paid properly.

I highly recommend don’t have children, keep your life simple, no need to keep spending buying junk you don’t need, question why you think you need to buy what you think you need .. You don’t need new a big house, trust me , you don’t!!!

Maybe 60 minutes should do a whole series on workplace environments from the view of the workers, and not the corporate owners. See where the real toxicity is. See how people making $15 an hour or less are actually treated.

I just quit my job as a propane delivery driver, the amount of work they had me doing for two other people and plus being on call for a week or two, was not worth $21 an hour! Who likes being wakened up at 3:30 am especially in dead of winter to go fill someone’s tank in the midddle of nowhere? They don’t care about my safety and well being! I almost got robbed twice!! I didn’t even give them two weeks notice, I just left! Now they are down to only two drivers!! I hope it hits them where it hurts

Hard work gets you nothing but another opportunity to work hard

I’m glad this is happening. The rent prices for apartments in the cities are beyond ridiculous. Why pay an outrageous amount of money to live in a little box, deal with daily traffic, plus deal with the hustle and bustle, and crowded places. When I can work from home while living in a bigger house or apartment, with no traffic, close to a beach and not have to deal with so many people. It’s a no brainer

It’s not a lack of employees, it’s a lack of living wage pay. The owners and CEOs are raking in the profits and leaving their employees to scrape by and live in poverty and this is unacceptable and we’re not going to continue being abused

Interesting I guess companies should think twice about nickel and diming employees and treating them like they're despensable.
