On a subliminal level I feel that chalkboards are better than whiteboards. Writing with a piece of rock onto another piece of rock feels solid to me, instead of wispy and transient like using an evaporative chemical-based marker on a synthetic material. My brain feels like the knowledge I gain from a chalkboard is more valuable than that gained off a whiteboard.

I was a child in the 1950's and I absolutely remember living through this transition from black to green. Green was my favorite color at the time so it definitely had my vote. Thank You so much for explaining how and why it happened!

My elementary school opened around 1970, so when I started there later that decade, the chalkboards were green. When I went to junior high in grade 7, it was a much older school with blackboards. I assumed the difference was due to the relative ages of the schools - green was just the new thing. And forty+ years later, I finally know the whole story. As to whiteboards, I'm inclined to wonder if, in a school environment, it's just change for changes sake. After all, there was coloured chalk long before whiteboards were dreamt up.

I remember greenboards being used to a degree in the mid-80s in my early grades. They used yellow chalk with them for better contrast. Beyond that, my school district used blackboards all the way through my graduation in the late 90s. Only my computer programming teacher started using whiteboards. He actually glued whiteboards over his blackboards. Teachers also took advantage of the steel in chalkboards to attach magnets to them. In my senior year of high school in the late 90s, some teachers were experimenting with using the old CRT TV sets mounted in their rooms with them connected to their computer to use them as a supplemental, digital board. Sometime in the 2000s, my school district switched to smartboards. Besides showing information digitally on the board, they could also play videos on them. It's something I missed out on, but the TVs connected to a computer was basically a sample of what was to come.

Regarding the option of color when using whiteboards: My first elementary school had actual slate blackboards. Our teachers used brightly colored chalks to highlight key elements. Bonus was that on special occasions the students were allowed to use one or two panels to draw mural-like expansive drawings. The two classrooms had a large area of blackboard to student ratio, which worked both for the artistic expression and for teaching multiple grades in one classroom. When I moved to a modern elementary school, the extremely smooth green chalkboards were not a surprise, but I was bemused at first by the pale yellow "dustless" chalk.

I much preferred classrooms with blackboards, not green. I have a visual impairment, and it’s much easier for me to see white and yellow on back than green. It got even worse for me when some of the newer schools I went to had white boards. I could hardly see anything, unless black was used. Chalk boards are also easier and cheaper to clean with water. White boards require a chemical spray to clean every week usually.

My first memories were of the black chalkboards. There were oiled erasers to deep clean the slate at the end of the week. Then came the green boards, where lint stuck to the surface when wet cleaning. I was in college before whiteboards showed up. The early ones were horrible. The colors stained the surface. They were smaller. Harder to see from the back of the room. Some place in there came the paper flip tablet, usually filled out before class. Chalkboards were the best, however.

Another benefit to painted steel is that magnets stick to it.

A number of my math and science classes used overhead projectors instead. The teach would sit and write on the blank transparency. They would have a few pre-made transparancies that they would write on with the water based markers. Clean up was a simple wet cloth or paper towel.

I can see green being a bit easier on the eyes, but a green background with white markings does not offer more contrast. Black and white offers the most contrast. The paint developed turned out to be green due to the formula having the best durability and performance than black/grey slate boards. If that had turned out to be blueish instead, then blue boards would have been more popular. If green is "supposed" to offer more contrast and provide less eye strain, then why aren't books printed on green paper with white lettering... simple, its more expensive but also you can't beat black lettering on a white background for contrast. Hence the proliferation of white boards.

We had yellow chalk on green boards. Yellow on green had more contrast than white on green and was easier on the eyes.

I graduated in 1981, so I was in school throughout the 70s. I remember both black and green chalkboards, and never thought anything of it. I never knew there was a shift from black to green. I just thought both were being made, without any special reason. But I thought it would be interesting to watch this video, and it was. I remember sometime when I was in high school (in a small Christian school), the school switched to white boards. Maybe I was a junior or senior at the time.

Cleaning erasers by using the custodian's heavy duty vacuum cleaner was a cherished chore in my primary schools. During the school day, the vacuum was parked in a cul de sac, with the hose detached.

There's something about the staccato click of chalk on a chalkboard. It has a way of making the most arcane scientific concepts more understandable. I still think about Dr. Powers in the Geology Department at GSU drawing perfect circles freehand in less than a second with enough accuracy to make near-perfect sketches from polarizing microscope slides. Thinking back to "Combat English" (an unofficial nickname for certain sections of ninth grade English at Columbia Military Academy), I was present when Tom Jones put his fist through the chalkboard and dislodged several bricks from the wall behind it. I was also there when he kicked a trash can through a closed door, the teacher in the next room leaning through with the ultimate understatement, "Is everything all right, Tom?" Old Jonesie, he was gruff on the outside, but he had a heart of gold and the soul of a poet.

I remember in the early 90s in grade school my computer teacher had a whiteboard but not just any one. First it could scroll to hide what you wrote and reveal clean board. Second, it could print out what you had hidden. It was the first time we'd ever seen a whiteboard at all so this was REALLY cool.

When I was in school, we had green chalkboards and most teachers used light yellow chalk. Fast forward to the '80s computer screens, most were either green characters or green backgrounds.

The older buildings all had slate boards that were black (built before 1960). The newer buildings had green boards (built after 1960). This changed in college where the boards were all brown in the original building (built in 1973). The newer buildings had green boards or white dry erase boards.

I could see the blackboad and white chalk better than the green boards. When My school went to white boards in the 90s some teachers made the whiteboard slideable and still used it and the green chalkboard before finally going to all whiteboard. But, one thing you didn't mention that I have heard personally is fingernails on a chalkboard. Had a substitute teacher to that once as my classmates were being unrulely and talk about a sound you never forget... thirty plus years later and I can still see and hear that moment! Try that with a whiteboard!

Our blackboards in school were mader of concrete, covered with died black slurry to achieve a smooth finish. In our college boards were made out of plywood and painted black, it was awful because the plywood would chip away. Now in university we have green boards.

I presumed the pale yellow chalk that arose with the green chalkboards was for increased contrast. Usually both the pale yellow and white were available. "Dustless" chalk (I think introduced soon after green chalkboards in schools) was harder and produced thinner and paler strokes than unimproved chalk.

Out of all the channels I've seen on RU-vid in the last 17 plus years, I don't believe any of them covered this topic. Types of chalk, chalk sources, psysics of chalk,, Non edit- about a minute into the video.,, The black ones were slate. I knew this. Why did I think it was something more manufactured than a porous lattice structure rock.

Chalk squeak , did it diminish with green boards ? Are roller boards immune to squeak ? Is marker squeak on whiteboard more irritating than chalk squeak on blackboard ? Should interactive whiteboards feature a squeak Easter egg ?
