I personally think that bollywood needs to stop selling STARS and start focusing on stories. That time is gone when people would just sit in theatres for 3 hours to see their heroes/heroines on screen. Now audience wants entertainment not celebrities. And movies with good screen writing and good acting/script has performed well in theatres like gangubai kathiawadi. And i think indian audience is going more global in recent times due high availability of internet. Why would i watch a sh*tty bollywood remake in theatre if i can watch good anime/drama online.🤷
You forgot to mention a big fact that that after SSR and Bollywood drug mafia and its exposed underworld links, bollywood lost its respect in public. Moreover it is necessary to notice that movies in India are promoted through mouth-to-mouth and P2P interaction and not by doing promotional events. The pre-pandemic boycott is not same as the post-pandemic-boycott.

As a Tamilan, I would say that what he is telling is absolutely right Now a days content is everything. Even in Chennai sometimes rajini, Vijay movies flops . Even though they are big stars, people started loving different films such as jai bhim, kaithi, asuran, love today which conveys the story in depth with a strong character. It is good to realise that people are eager to watch content rather than watching big stars movies.

One thing missing in today's movies is the core emotions which holds the film together. If you go back 10 years and you would see how we were making better films back then. Bollywood needs to empower their writers. People won't spend their money for dumb content, lackluster filmmaking or stereotyping a particular community. Movies needs to rise above it.
Bollywood films back then used to be dramatic like serials. Back then, no ott platforms were there, also not many people used to watch Hollywood or tollywood movies. But today's audience has evolved, they need either Hollywood level content in their movies (mainly youngsters) or an action entertainer like Pushpa, Kgf , RRR etc. It should look massive on screen, great bgm, good story, suspense or thrill at the end etc .

But people liked it at that time because not many movies were made then like Bollywood does now, not many platforms used to exist then, not many options people had to watch. People used to watch anything due to lack of options. And talking about, people like ddlj even now is because it's connected to nostalgia. These films somehow reminds us our good old days. Reminds us past sweet memories. If this same film was made now, with everything unchanged, I don't think this film gonna work.

As an Indian residing in south. I have some suggestions 1. Make movies with regional areas(relatibility) 2. Hire actors from hindi belt 3. Stop using Urdu and Punjabi. Because Bollywood is HINDI movie industry. Here in sandalwood we don't use tamil or telugu. We use kannada (While listening to hindi songs I was finding hard to understand. Then my Rajasthani friend said it's Punjabi. Whole life I thought yo yo honey singh used to sing in hindi🤣) 4. Stop remakes because we have otts 5. avoid controversy. Especially the actors 6. The reason I don't go to theatre is cos in Bengaluru, movie ticket cost me 500 (3-4 people) whereas popcorn and snacks cost me 1500. I can buy 3 OTT platform subscription 😂😅
Boycott isn't the reason because both Akshya Kumar and John Abraham's movie flopped. The reason is content. During lockdown most Indians got the taste of good movies from OTT. Now they'll go to theatres only if it's good enough. Even Hollywood BO was said to be suffering because of that. Top Gun Maverick is now said to have revived BO of Hollywood

Another fact I want to add, In the lockdown, hell lot of indians Including me, who were watching only 2 hours movie, got time to try multi episode series, be it anime, webseries, k drama, or any other thing. And one thing they have but movies don't, is story buildup and character development. It takes time and patience to explain, and one you are used to watching series which 2-4 hours to build up its story and characters for a great finale, you will not be entertained by 2 hour movie. I watched RRR and It had the Character development I wanted. And it was one of the best films to watch because in its 3 hour duration, it took me through so many ups and downs. Please think about this angle too. Or try Attack On TItan, you will know in 2 hours.
1) Bollywood directors & producers opt for a tried & tested successful movie, but not a new one i.e. a remake of other language which downgrades its impression. 2) Bollywood story delivering is so poor now a days that they intentionally introduce an item song Or an actress which reveals too much body parts to attract young audience because their story, content, lyrics, song is so trash that nobody gonna watch it without introducing nudity. But, they should realise, arey they releasing a movie or porn? 3) Actors lack professionalism .. Akshay kumar making so many biopics without really preparing for that role... Salman, shahrukh act without getting into the role which is given to them, rather act as if they are assigned with real life roles. Only hrithik & aamir khan mold themselves according to the role. 4) Again movie lacks professionalism - Bolly movies are not based on the story, rather they are more commercialized. You can see in South, they chose the story & the acts & actors revolve around it which makes it interesting. But, in case of bollywood, you will see an item song, cheap comedy, unnecessary nudity irrespective of the story. Ex -: i) in movie like super 30 which is based on a teacher, his students, science... They introduced item song out of nowhere which is clearly unprofessional. ii) mission mangal - story is about mission mars of isro... There are so many out of the context scenes like vidya & her husband fight, vidya's son getting into hindu-muslim conflict, metro fight of ladies, akshay kumar making poori in a high-profile ISRO meeting! You can see Hollywood movies like titanic, anaconda... all of the scenes are related to movie story, no unnecessary scenes are added. In South also, movies like bahubali, rrr, pushpa, kgf all are strictly professional about the story which makes them successful. In my opinion, due to OTT, people are getting access to wider variety of movies from different languages. After watching extremely energetic, high profile professional movies in South India, korean & hollywood industries, they barely want to go to unprofessional commercialization oriented Bollywood movies!
Being a south India I can say for a fact that south movies have had great stories great cast and acting from a long time, now the North audience have become open its consumption. The south hasn't changed their strategy much apart from better dubbing in Hindi. It's the audience that has changed.
One more important thing you forgot to mention was about movies being banned.. some movies with really good content gets banned following huge protests due to political and cultural reasons.. this is one of the reasons why Bollywood is scared to make movies with some real stories.. I have watched so many good movies which were not released on RU-vid and they have been so good

As you're giving the examples of 2015 and 2016s movie but on that time less people were able to access media so it had not create a huge impact. Padmavat never hurted hindu sentiments because none of our gods or godesses were insulted in that film. He is deviating from the real reason behind flop of LSC. Amir Khan insulted Bhagvan Shiv in PK. Pk was anti hindu movie not Padmavat. Padmavati was a historical character and a highly respectable woman for Rajput community but she is not any goddess. So there was nothing in Padmavat which hurted Hindu sentiments.

Another point is that the action sequences in Hindi won't connect with audience emotionally. But this is not the case with South film industry where they potray emotions so well at the right time that keeps audience engaging. That's the screenplay the audience would want to see.
I will differ a little bit... The whole boycott movement didn't have any impact back in the day of dangal or padmaavat here in a village of Odisha... My dad and uncle both of them watched the movies... Now their perception is that bollywood is finished and we should boycott them as well... And they are people who used to watch a lot of bollywood movies.

The boycott movement you spoke about were the ones when most people were not on social media basically on twitter. But now the hashtags are even discussed in prime time of news and reason is the increasing number of users in twitter and the effect of boycott has spread wide. So if not full but boycott trends have caused people to retrospect about the movies they are going to watch.

For example, we know Punjabi cuisine or Maharashtrian cuisine. Why does no one discuss cuisines of UP or MP? Hindi itself is a newly created language by sanskritising hindustani.

No boycott campaign can stop a good movie from being successful. That being said, all the recent bollywood releases are poor af in terms of content. Divided by complaints, United by Boycott. Also earlier there used to the section of people against releases like Padmavat, but now it's a mass movement. Everyone have thier own reasons but they all have agreed on boycott. Additionally, the remake and formula based ventures are now just not connecting. Like malyalam industry is now producing masterpiece thriller one after another.
Boycott doesn't affects even 5% of the movie goers. It has been proven time and again. Laal Singh Chaddha was abad movie orherwise it would have been a success just like Dangal. Except some stupid fanatics no body gives a shit about these fake boycott theories. These thin skinned people are used to getting hurt and cry since decades, no one bothers about them.
I don't think boycott had a big impact on movies, like Akshay Kumar's sooryavanshi was also mass boycotted by people still it was hit, also there were calls for boycott of Alia Bhatt as well but despite that her movie Gangubai kathiawadi got hit

If the content is good no need to worry about social media boycott .The problem is with the content it is not connected with the common people or public. I used to watch bollywood movies in my college days now I can barely connect with any of the movie except one or two. I strongly believe that the director and screen play writers must come from diversified and must be from humble background so that they can bring their surroundings to the screen .Most of the directors and actors now a days seem to come from the elite background who are no way connected with common people except what they see on their way to airports. So they don't know about common people even if they were presented with a story line that reflects the livelyness of common audiance and way of life they won't accept such stories because they are the representative of elite 1% who are no way connected to the masses.
As a 18 year old, from Varanasi I prefer to watch Quality movie not Cheap copy of Hollywood,Korean movie I will prefer to watch Forest Gump over Remake I will watch RRR, KGF because it's quality content I prefer watching movies on Amazon prime or Hotstar rather than wasting money of Copied Money
Many people have already commented about other important points why bollywood is failing. I would like to add one more point is that the VFX and Animation artists are not given the proper time and respect. The producers want everything done in the fastest way possible and therefore this is the result they get. This needs to change as well !
For me, time is a big constraint, I would watch one movie sometimes in a span of one week on an OTT and if its not good I'll just skip over it in sometime and not resume watching it. Now considering that I have to spend more than 2 hours in a theater I would want to see a great entertainer with original content otherwise I would happily spend the same time on a food court with family in the same mall I was supposed to go to watch a movie!

There are a lot of alternatives to movies as well. Not just web series , short films , but anime industry is also blooming in India. It would make a good topic as well in my opinion. PS : I'm myself an 11th grade student. And imo many adults (24+) also watch anime because they got to see shows like DBZ early on in their childhood , which kinda set bar. And some are introduced to it in the adulthood itself and still find it amusing enough to watch irrespective of their age.
Japanese shonen anime may be better for our children, but many anime's highly sexualized, and most of the time they are quite boring where mostly watch a 5 or 10 mins skipping video rather than the whole 20 mins(once I'm an addict at watching anime, I read many manga's and many web and light novels, think of it as a perspective from a experienced person) but few anime are more interesting, valuable in life than many generic movies like HxH,Naruto,deathnote,OPM,OP these r just mainstream they are many hidden gems too

Actually the same happened in Kollywood (Tamil ) before OTT what people were doing was average movies they were watching through pirated sites like Tamilrockers and if a movie was great they skipped pirated and went to theatres. Best example of this was THANI ORUVAN a tamil film I saw happen live my friends were like "man its a good movie we need to watch it in theatres".

We need to normalise actors compensation. High compensation will inflate the production cost. High production cost increases risk for the production house and want to stick to remakes or routine story/content. Yep yep, multi-starrer South films is a recent trend. The artist who really kickstarted it and still keeps that tradition alive in my opinion is Vijay sethupathi. From Vikram vedha to Master and Vikram to sharing screen with debutant actors in a Telugu film. Lack of ego can do wonders.

Bollywood movies suck because of the stories, almost every movie I’ve watched basically goes like this: there is a hero who may or may not have had a troubled past, he starts liking this girl, the villain comes then he defeats the villain and Marries the girl.
I think COVID lockdowns also played a very important role in this. For majority of Indians, this was the first time when they felt okay to pay for OTT platforms and there they discovered movies from worldwide which were amazing. So if you have original amazing movies to watch on these platforms, why would you go to theatres to watch a remake. Moreover, negative sentiments around Bollywood films also convinces people to not watch the films. So basically for a Bollywood film to work, they should not just have original content but a grand scale. Iske alawa, connect more with masses, I mean upper middle class bhi Gehraiyaan se related nhi kar pai. Upper class mushkil se 2-3% hai toh kaise chalegi movie. Btw, awesome video.

The boycott message may not reach to the major odience at that time because digitisation just started at that time ,so very few people have internet penetration and indian peoples are less matured at that time on internet. There are very few flim review youtube channels at that time. Most of the people i met don't watch lal singh chadda because bollywood is anti hindu, not because of bad content.

Brother I am from Tamil Nadu. Just want you to know that Bachan pandey is supposed to be a remake of Jiggerthanda; But they have changed the actual story and thus the feel of the movie and Hence a flop in Hindi. But the worst is cuttpitalli, You have to watch Ratchasan in Tamil my friend it's one of the best movies in India ; These guys didn't even bother to copy the movie as it is and have skipped make important scenes. How do you expect it to do well. Just by watching an Actor face no1 goes for movie these days if the story is not appealing.
Lot of people complain about Bollywood remaking English and Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu films. But even good original Hindi movies tend to be remade in Tamil, Telugu like Andhadhun. And a lot of South films like malayalam or Tamil are remade in Telugu and vice versa. But yes, Bollywood profits more in box office from remakes. Most likely Bollywood is now flopping in action genre cuz of the bad material not required to watch on theatres.

Don’t know why every so called ‘Bollywood Analysts’ are downplaying Sushant’s death as key turning point for Bollywood’s downfall. I am not fan of Sushant though, whatever the reasons were but people took his death very seriously. This gives another reason that people started thinking Bollywood a more like a syndicate than a competitive industry.

Good Video. But one thing I wanted to mention that you are showing the overall numbers: domestic + international. Dangal earned much more in China than it did in India. Even though it still earned enough in India, we shouldn't forget that we are specifically talking about Indian audiences and showing international figures along with domestic ones comes in the cross with graphs and pie charts you showed which only talked about the domestic region.
This might sound silly but 1 of the main deterrent for watching movies in cinema hall is ridiculous prices of popcorn and cold-drinks. If I can watch the same movie sitting in my drawing room comfort with my friends, why should I spend 250 rs for tickets and 750 rupees for cold drinks and popcorn combo!

The story line of movies is also something you missed. After watching international content which revolves around science fiction, art, horror, documentary movies, etc, Indian audience has realised that movies can be about topics other than just love stories. The era of indian romantic movies is finished as the audience has realised the difference between reel and real. The audience only connects with topics which can add value to their time and not just entertainment. Thought provoking content is something that bollywood is missing out and OTT has changed the playing field for bollywood in a way that even mega stars have to proof their worth for attention of audience. The bollywood needs to understand their target audience well before starting any projects. The era of shah Rukh, salman and amir is over. Actors who have the capacity to perform in an organic way are accepted and nepo kids or underperforming actors are not accepted. Prove your worth from your performance or else bear the burnt!

Tbh I don't really enjoy watching Bollywood movies now even though I was once a fan of it. It happened last year. I was scrolling through RU-vid and then a video popped up. It was about a Japanese animated movie (also called anime) called 'Your Name'. It caught my eye. I searched about it and found many positive reviews about it. And after watching it, I fell in love. The story, the direction, the characters, everything about them is just soo beautiful. This made me start watching anime. Most Bollywood movies fail when compared to them. Although there are some Bollywood masterpieces which would always remain in my heart like Taare Zameen par, Chicchore, 3 Idiots etc. but for me, anime has taught me so many things! from understanding and feeling emotions, humour and so much more. It also made me a good judge when I watch any movie. So you must also try other things. Its not bad to come out of your comfort zone. P.S - You can watch these as your starter anime if you wish :) 1. A lot has changed in past 8 years. Especially after introduction of Jio. I had watched PK in theatres and I enjoyed it. But if the same type of movie is released now , it will most likely be a flop since people now are realising the subtle propaganda being run by Bollywood since years and also media campaign that ran against Bollywood (especially Nepotism) post death of SSR have affected their business to a large extent.Before his death, people hardly used to criticise an actor just because he is nepo kid but now even if the actor iss talented, there is high chances that he/she will be trolled even before the debut

About nepotism, I don't feel like people are gonna disregard the upcoming release of Brahmastra and just sit at home because both the stars are nepo kids. What about anurag kashyap's mukkebaj movie in the context of your example of a fighter movie... In mukkebaj caste was a very dominant factor but still it not perform. The problem with your analysis is you are not taking time into your analysis.... The time in which these movies are released also matter... Audiences are changed so much after the COVID.
One reason is the access to worldwide content through OTT. People now have more exposure and are willing to only watch movies in theatre if they are provided with good quality content.
Yes, out of all the reasons, I always believed OTT had a great impact in Cinema. Most of the time we prefer ordering food than making it. That's how lazy we have become. It's something similar to that, we have become lazy to walk to the cinema until and unless it's not an extraordinary film. And even the normal film goers are pissed with the Bollywood culture of the remake. People are also cancelling remake movies.. And also the impact from sushant singh, the media house used sushanth death as their prime show which actually affected big stars in the form of nepotism debate..
If the motive is to tackle problems then why denigrate Lord Shiva ? When problem is in muslim society, the film focused on the problem, not in Islam or Prophet Muhhamad, so why not same here ?
