same here, it have more to do with the phrasing of the riddle, than our folk tales. The emphasis was brought more attention to the statue for the 1st riddle, while less emphasis on the beach nearby which make it seem like non-important background information. Also the solution of the 2nd riddle was dumb, who would want to carry a bag of sand around and up a hill. Just get a rock and make markings on the cave walls, much easier.
@Odima16
@Odima16 7 лет назад
I'm American, but I've been exposed to so many water displacement videos on RU-vid that I immediately thought of the solution to the first one. And I've been exposed to so many Minecraft caves that I thought the solution to the second one was to follow the left hand rule (which is faulty, I know :P).
@wudude3545
@wudude3545 7 лет назад
As an american, i got the first one and failed the second. The second one's solution seems silly, nobody would carry pounds of sand into a cave. My answer was to keep your right hand on the right wall, then when you want to get out keep your left hand on the wall. That way, you dont have to carry more weight with you and you cant get mixed up if you back track like you could with the sand.

The solution to the second one is bad. if you encounter a loop crossing the old path you will be lost. Always sticking to the right wall on you way in and allays sticking to the left wall on your way out is guaranteed to get you back out. Not to mention that you wont have to carry the heavy weight of the sand and aren't dependent on the caves cleanliness.

@sanjaymatsuda4504
@sanjaymatsuda4504 7 лет назад
That answer assumes that the people use gold pieces that are all of the same size and weight, and that they are completely honest. Imagine if they tried to pay with irregular chunks of gold, or with gold dust. Or imagine that they normally use gold bricks, but they also have access to hollow gold bricks, or bricks made of a cheap material and then coated with gold, for the explicit purpose of conning people who rely on counting rather than weighing (or counting and weighing).
@Caitlin_TheGreat
@Caitlin_TheGreat 6 лет назад
Sanjay, the latter method you offer of coating false bricks with gold could still work to their advantage during weighing, especially if they use lead. Even if they don't use lead, much of the weight will be taken up by non-gold (heavy stone I'd guess) simply coated to fool the man.

@zainio
@zainio 7 лет назад
k that's not true considering main people here including me solves this instantly and have been educated in the west. just because you can't use common sense doesn't mean its the education systems fault. the Chinese system is the exact same. did you even watch the video? the whole point is that previous stories that were popular in the persons region influenced how quickly and well they could solve it. nothing to do with education or formulas.
@TheBierschorle
@TheBierschorle 7 лет назад
well, I wouldn't say it's the fault of the educational system. To me it makes sense that your cultural background influences your answer. But these weren't hard riddles. @MatthiasYReich
@MatthiasYReich 7 лет назад
Hänsel und Grethel did not use pebbles, but bread crumbs, that's why they got lost in the first place, cause the birds are the crumbs... Also there are various other solutions, e.g. always turn right, so to get out you just always turn left, sure it's not very effective, but neither is the sand one cause you can always only exile one path per fork/'crossing'. It would probably make more sense to write down actual notes either the sand at each fork... Also the fact that the riddle were solved with different success rates may just as well be due to language... If in one phrasing ist more emphasised that he travels by boat or that he travels on sand (rather than in a dessert since to my knowledge not all desserts have sand) it's far easier to solve.

Next, grab a bag, fill it with sand, and sprinkle a trail of sand behind you as you go through the cave. Once it's all said and done, you should have an unclogged toilet.

The second riddle's solution is really bad for these reasons: 1) What if the cave was structured like a maze and there are overlapped path you must scout to get to the treasure? Backtracking can sometimes result in a dead loop. 2) Can the bag hold enough sand to track the entire cave & can you carry it? This is not critical but time-consuming as hell. 3) Will the sand stay there? My proposed solution: carry a piece of paper and a pen. Every time you get to a point with multiple possible paths, draw a simple graph of that point. And don't you tell me you don't have pen and paper in the bag.

I'm not sure if I technically got the second riddle right because I didn't think sand at all, first I thought of creating a trail with grass and leafs. My other thought was if he was only allowed to use the items on his person like in the other riddle, then my other thought was to leave the flash light behind you and follow the light back (but really grossly underestimating the size of the cave), maybe because the natural climate where I live and grew up doesn't have many large caves.

For the first riddle: Remain the statue on the boat, fill the boat with gold until it sinks. Then take out the statue and repeat. The difference of the amount of gold in both cases is the weight of the statue. Anyone who knows Archimedes principle should know well. Though, the video did not mention any tools available for marking the boat.

I was thinking of using the boat itself as the weight by putting the statue on one end and the gold on the other but close enough I guess, same concept.

For the first one I thought they'd put the statue on one end and the gold on the other until it was level.

It took me 3 minutes to solve the first riddle, and I solved the second one in less than a minute.

assuming gold and statue would have equal density, I would immerse them in water and find the water displaced by the statue , then compare it with gold. Would that be correct.

For the first riddle my first inclination was to find some string and tie it to the entrence

My answer for the first riddle was a bit different. I thought that since it is a canoe, a big rock would tilt it upwards if placed on either side of the canoe and then all you have to do is place an even amount of gold on the other side until the canoe gets back to place, basically using it as a scale.

For the first riddle, you could have put the statue on one end of the canoe and put gold on the other to balance it out

Quite fascinating that childhood stories have such an impact on our ways of thinking about solutions, Great video, very entertaining

idk I think I found good alternative solutions to the riddles. The first one I thought you could put the statue on one end of the boat and piled the gold on the other end to find the balance. I also thought "Surely the tax collector had an oar?" he could use that like a seesaw to balance the money and statue. The second riddle I thought the explorer could have kept his hand on one side of the walls to trace his way back out, much like you can do in a maze.

While I recognized that the mention of the beach in the second question was important and would likely have something to do with the answer, I still neglected to figure it out. The first one I answered quickly by thinking of the story of the discovery of water displacement. (the crown of gold and the king needed to know if it was real or fake and they put it in a tub). The second answer seems really silly because depending on how big the cave is you could have to carry around a LOT of sand which is actually pretty heavy, especially when wet, like beach sand. I thought of keeping your right hand on the right wall while walking in and your left hand on the left wall while walking out but a lot of people seem to think that would only work with one tunnel. However, so would the sand. After returning to a fork in the cave from traveling down one side, there are now two sides with sand leading into them. If you travel down the other fork, when you return, there will be 3 sides with sand in them and you will be lost.

In the first riddle, my answer was get the villagers to pick up the statue and then get a tarp and add gold until the villagers who held the statue all had to carry the tarp.

Well considering the visual of the gold is in ingots which are usually of matching weight, he could just rock up there and say, "Give me what you gave me last time", I guess

I got the second riddle before he finished talking, but don't know the Hansel and Gretel story. I just thought about leaving trail of string.

The first one was somewhat easy because we know right away that the boat is part of the solution.

I didn't think of Hansel and Gretel but the story of the Minotaur where the hero used a ball of twine to lead him back out of the labyrinth.
