According to Statistics Canada, 14 per cent of Canadians did not have access to a regular health-care provider in 2022. Another survey from the same year from the "Our Care" project, led by the University of Toronto, suggested the numbers were even worse, with 22 per cent lacking a primary care provider.
Medical students are less likely to choose a career in family medicine, according to the Ontario Medical Association, citing data from the Canadian Resident Matching Service.
CPAC’s Michael Serapio asks Dr. Danielle Martin, chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, how to reverse the trend.
