Why are Haworthia truncata's leaves so flat, anyway?

In this plant profile, I explore the environmental advantages conferred to Haworthia truncata -- a succulent plant from South Africa -- due to its distinctively flat leaves. Haworthia truncata is a relatively common succulent in collections, prized for the distichous, truncate leaf structure. I also explore the best methods for cultivating this stunning plant, including its possible use as a houseplant.

I find the Haworthia that have “windows” are so interesting, but I never knew they actually use the windows because that’s all that shows above ground! So wonderful, thanks for this information 🌱

That is definitely an interesting one, and fascinating both for its underground growth habit and that it doesn't care about being uprooted. Most of my cacti let me know in no uncertain terms that they hate that. Question: Given its underground growth habit but the importance of exposing the translucent surface the right way to allow light penetration, is this one of the succulents that actively leans in response to changing light conditions? Or is it one that a grower has to maintain constant light conditions to the orientation of the plant's form?

Thanks for watching! They will very gradually lean towards the light but they’re not hugely finicky anyway. In cultivation, where their leaves are exposed above the soil line, the exterior of their leaves is also capable of photosynthesis as well.
