India is so bad at planning cities because we have no ‘one’ effective, central urbanisation plan at all. We do not have state-level urbanisation plans either. And till recently, we did not even have effective, functional district level comprehensive urbanisation plans. Though there have been ministries and departments, but their power to make deep dents in the system was negligible.
It has now become a torism that Indian cities are poorly planned and governed. Plans do not have complete sway over our cities since they are constantly violated and a significant section of the urban population lives outside “planned” neighbourhoods. Nevertheless, the state religiously performs the ritual of master planning every 10 or 20 years

भारत शहरों की योजना बनाने में इतना बुरा है क्योंकि हमारे पास कोई 'प्रभावी', केंद्रीय शहरीकरण योजना नहीं है। हमारे पास राज्य-स्तरीय शहरीकरण योजनाएं भी नहीं हैं। और हाल तक, हमारे पास प्रभावी, कार्यात्मक जिला स्तर की व्यापक शहरीकरण योजना भी नहीं थी। हालांकि मंत्रालय और विभाग रहे हैं, लेकिन सिस्टम में गहरी गति बनाने की उनकी शक्ति नगण्य थी।

Yes, I live in Chandigarh and when I come to UP then I feel suffocated because everything is made unplanned here in UP. In Chandigarh, traffic jams are rare but in Lucknow, traffic jams are normal, you can see that everywhere. People here in UP park their car wherever they want. But in Chandigarh there is a particular place to park your car and roam around market.

Exactly, they have money but no proper planing. 6 months before, main road in my town was bit messy. They rebuilt that road into perfect concreatized wider one. And after 2 months they digged the road for installing gas pipes. This proves there is lack in planing 🙄

I hate to say this but from what I have seen Pakistan over all has much better looking and clean cities compared to India, the average population also seems richer there, I dont think Pakistan has poverty like this. Not sure what is going on India the amount of poverty is just shocking, no other country is like this. One of the things I like about a lot of Indian cities is that they have neighbourhoods that are still mostly walkable. Metros in recent years have been changing to unfortunately adapt a North American style of city planning, with long distances and roads without footpaths or cycle paths, and no walking or cycle-exclusive zones, but most city centers and older areas in cities have that old world charm of walkable neighbourhoods and markets similar to European cities.

Japanese cities don't have grid patterns but they are better planned than American cities. It is about zoning and pedestrian infrastructure. Narrow streets actually look very nice as you can see in Tokyo, but they need to be pedestrianised.

Ur city doesn't need to be new to be modern. Its just pure lack of maintenance and refurbishment. Even corruption is one major factor. Many european cities are ancient and still have modern facilities. London, tokyo, hong kong are great examples.
