I knew intake valves were larger to get high volume of air, exhaust valves smaller confused me. Now I know why...thanks again Matt

But they are on a planet that goes round and round, so how do you set the timing to make them only go up and down but not left and right?

I'll cop to it, I am probably the recent asker he referred to. My question was because I was thinking about why they weren't the same. Where you can eliminate parasitic drains, why wouldn't you? And my thought process was that evacuating exhaust is one of those. To my mind, actively making the exhaust valve smaller/intake bigger wasn't immediately obvious.

I thought I knew why that was the case.. however its always great to hear an expert explaining it in proper language I can understand.. me being from midlands.. "The North" according to those born south of Watford Gap and know no better. :)

I wasn't going to watch this because I knew why but did anyway eventually. Worth it for the intro and that 5 valve head. Made me laugh. I did know why. Thanks. 👍

Exhaust valves get the benefit of many times the pressure differential due to the force of combustion versus the intake valve which has atmospheric pressure helping it in, maybe some boost. So exhaust valves don't need to be as large, they operate at an extremely high pressure differential.

Thanks for the video. Next question in my mind, is why is it that your intake valves wear out before the exhaust do? When you bike starts to get hard to start, and its time to get your valves done by your local shop, its always the inlet valves they do. Why?
@dirtygarageguy
@dirtygarageguy 6 лет назад
Intake valves recieve higher impact loading. Bigger valve = bigger, heavier valve head. Most valves share the same valve stem size.

i'm guessing overlap wouldn't work as well with same size valves because there wouldn't be any difference in the flow/pressure of air and we probably end up with exhaust gaz back in too?

Does that mean that engines designed to have a supercharger (NOT a turbo) can have smaller intake valves? (or have all the valves be the same size, for ease of production, for example)
@dirtygarageguy
@dirtygarageguy 6 лет назад
No, the same thing applies.
@mandernachluca3774

So, when do you reach the point where the radius of the outlet valve is so small that we actually lose power because of inefficient scavenging (residual exhaust gas in the cylinder)? I always though that one of the main reasons for small exhaust valves was some kind of venturie-effect, wich would accelerate gases at the valve area. Due to mass inertia, the gas deaccelerates slower and due to the higher initial velocity, the gases have a higher average velocity.

I have a question about the newer 4T trail bikes. From an engineering perspective who makes the most dependable engine? I'm not really interested in maximum horse power, I'm just looking for the most efficient and dependable bike. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.
@dirtygarageguy
@dirtygarageguy 6 лет назад
LOL sorry dude but time will tell on this one. This isn't an engineering question, unless one engine stood out for having a defective design that would inherently fail. I could give you 4 pistons from 4 different manufacturers and say - "which one will fail first out of a sample of 1000?" - Only real world running of 1000's of models can tell you this after 'x' amount of years. Hency why forums and bike magazines still exist, to weed out the common issues over time.
@nigelhowe2387
@nigelhowe2387 6 лет назад
Stupid question time, are there any non circular valves? I don't have the engineering background to know better, but I was wondering if semi circular valves were possible? You could have 2 valves and cover the whole area (almost)
@Aspire198
@Aspire198 6 лет назад
Might be talking out my arse but I believe Matt may have covered it before in a video. I think generally it comes down to the reasons we run circular pistons. Its easier to manufacture, its easier to seal and and I'd imagine its easier to account for mechanical wear

does it make sense then to further increase a little the intake port for performance purposes in order to further push power at high RMP? If so does it have implications in terms of other modifications that should be considered?

do they ever use smaller valves for intake with turbos?
@ryanbernard6550
@ryanbernard6550 6 лет назад
You mean do they put turbos on poorly designed, inefficient motors to make them better? Yes.. Would you intentionally make your intake valves smaller since you're using a turbo? Not sure.. Only reason i can see doing that is either bigger exhaust valves or more swirl.
@dirtygarageguy
@dirtygarageguy 6 лет назад
No because the same thing applies.
@mandernachluca3774
@mandernachluca3774 6 лет назад
There are turbodiesel engines with same sized (or almost same sized) intake and exhaust valves but rather that was intentional or not is another question ;D. I would guess that turbodiesel engines have a lot more intake time (since their max rpm is limited to something around 5000-6000 rpm due to the slower self ignition process diesel engines use) and therefor don't need the advantage of bigger intake valves. They tend to focus more on turbulences to ensure a fast flamefront (a good diffiusion of the fuel into the hot precompressed air).
@chrisdavidson911
@chrisdavidson911 6 лет назад
"Would you intentionally make your intake valves smaller since you're using a turbo? Not sure.. Only reason i can see doing that is either bigger exhaust valves or more swirl." - that's kinda what i was meaning, as opposed to using it as a workaround for putting the head on backwards! using boost pressure to overcome the pumping issues of the valves being smaller, and having a larger exhaust outlet so there's less resistance and being able to drive the turbo a bit better but apparently not, so never mind....

Can't you make a 6-stroke engine where the supercharging piston is running like a single cylinder 4-stroke but uses the volume under the piston to charge the second cylinder and both of them exhaust into the third "turbo" cylinder that not only rotates the crankshaft but also in turn uses its under-piston volume to supercharge the first cylinder that runs as 4 stroke?
