As Bulgarian who worked 4 years in USA California as teacher i will say that... Before i moved on to America i dint really appreciated the way of living in Bulgaria. But 2 years after moved on i really started to miss it.. Yes i was getting paid very well in USA but sadly the way of life is just fake house of cards... Two years ago i returned back to Bulgaria and i don`t think to leave ever again.

I think honestly that we are not a bit racist in Bulgaria because we don't care any baggage from a history point if view. We never had slaves and a lot of people felt like slaves or at least a lot of the freedoms taken away during the Ottoman Empire days. There us a quote from the first Constitution of Bulgaria (Tarnovo Constitution) Nobody in the Principality of Bulgaria is permitted to buy or sell human beings. Each and every enslaved human being, regardless of his/her gender, faith or ethnicity is declared free at the moment he/she sets foot in our land. We just don't carry this baggage of colonialism, slavery and so on

I appreciated the different perspectives of those interviewed in this video. I am American, and after a couple of years of research, took my first trip to Bulgaria in March 2022 when I visited several areas and cities. I will be moving to Bulgaria sometime within the next 12 months primarily because of the lower cost of living. However, I also appreciate the stunning natural beauty of the countryside, the deep history and historical sites all over the country, the people whom I met were all fantastic. I love the way the Bulgarians seem to value family and particularly children and parents. That is something very strikingly different from the USA, and I'm very much looking forward to being in a culture where children and parents are more valued and taken care of. I look forward to having a home in a village and growing some fruits and vegetables, having some peace and quiet, and becoming a part of a village community. However, I can also see some benefit in having an apartment in a city, and probably will also seek to have one in either Plovdiv, Varna or Burgas at some point. I am looking forward to hiking, spending time at the coast, visiting Greece and Turkey and all of the other surrounding countries, and quick flights to other parts of Europe which I have yet to explore!! Two things which I did not like about Bulgaria were the trash strewn everywhere and the stray animals. Wherever I end up in Bulgaria, I will be picking up trash regularly! And for sure, I will learn the language.

Thank you for the positivity. We, the bulgarians, have never learn to appreciate what we really have here. I lived in the UK for about 6 years, since Brexit I took the decision to move back home. Even tho I speak 4 languages, I still wasn't the first choice when interviewed, if ever. One day I fed up, with all the negativity, with all the fake smiles and pleasantry and left. Now I'm back on the sea side, doing what I love and enjoying life. Also, just a quick professional tip for all potential online property shoppers, please, visit the place before you buy it. I sell properties and have seen enough false advertisements, and most importantly, choose the area well, see it, touch it beforehand. Best of luck to all of you, who choose our little space under the sun :).

Moved to a village just outside Veliko Tarnavo nearly 4 years ago. As said In the video we made a choice to live in a village with no expats after seeing the behaviour of expat heavy villages. Besides that, the country, the people, the lifestyle is fantastic, it is a safe and welcoming place to live. I will never go back to the UK, visits back there brings home the fact I want to return ASAP. Get to know the locals, attempt the language and you will be accepted.

Seeing this made me all the more determined to get moved to Bulgaria, I was looking a couple of years ago but couldn't move then, but this year I started looking again for a rural traditional home with the cellar, barns, and a summer kitchen and land to grow my food and have room to make paper, fabric, and dyes and inks that I just don't have the room here ... I need to have room! It looks stunning and everything I am needing for my lifestyle. I want to experience the different culture and learn new things.

I am Bulgarian and I can never explain to a foreigner the feeling of pride we feel from this fact. I appreciated the richness of nature and the luck of being born in this spiritually rich territory when I traveled in Europe and later in the Persian Gulf. Before, on the words of foreigners that we have such a rich land, but invisible to the eyes of every person, I did not appreciate it. I have gone abroad, but I have not lived for more than 3 months outside my homeland. We have one drawback among the folk psychology of Bulgarians - they are the two extremes - either they are very intelligent and well-read, or they are very rude, simple and boring. There is almost no golden mean. If there are, they are puppet people who never have an opinion of their own. For foreigners, I can say that I don't want you to use Bulgaria only as a consumer, but to start loving it like me - with a sense of pride that you step on it, walk on it, and that it gives you positive energy and the highest form of humanity- KINDNESS!

I am very experienced living and working in several foreign countries (Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, USA, Cambodia, Japan). I have visited many others (e.g. Ukraine, Serbia, India, Dubai). So far, my favourite countries on my short list to retire to are Taiwan, Turkey and Bulgaria. I have never even been to Sofia. The key features that suggest that I should at least do an exploratory visit are as follows, and in this order of priority... 1. vegetarian-friendly 2. low cost/excellent value especially for groceries, rent and transportation 3. quiet (traffic in India was very noisy) 4. mostly Christian (Orthodox) and non-Asian population, but with some other minorities rather than a homogenous population such as Japan 5. distrustful of big government I am fed up with Canada because common sense and traditional values are so rare, especially in government policies. Question: why are none if these expats living on the southern coast near Turkey?

18:20 - All Bulgarian traditions(and traditions in general) have deeper and more complex meaning and also practical side than one can see at first glance when you hear them. The baby should not be shown & exposed to people outside the parents(or at maximum the people who live in the same house) because: - it could be negatively enchanted/cursed by the eyes of other people. This is NOT a joke and it is real. My grand-grandmother was such healer and was healing both people and animals(they can be too, outside natural diseases). It is related with the energy coming from the eyes of a person, and even a relative or a friend can be the source, and they might not even know it, if they have very strong energy or are negative. Babies are extremely sensitive to energies so they can easily be a subject of the above. Few examples from my own family: 1. My mom as a baby would died if her parents weren't fortunate enough to visit one of the grandmothers who back then most knew how to spot "уроки"(the negative enchantment/curse/spell, search the meaning - "уроки"). 2. One of my grandfathers father was a priest and had 11 kids and the youngest died as a baby from that same "уроки", being negatively enchanted/cursed and when it happened no one who knew about how to spot it and cure it was there. The babies eyes burst in their sockets(I assume from the pressure & stress of the energies within). - Immune system. A new born is literally having its immune system developed based on what the mother fed him and the mother's immune system. So every person who this new born is in contact with is an entirely different immune system & source of different bacteria and viruss, that is extremely dangerous for the baby. While the mother and the father are with it non-stop and it adapts to their presence. Of course, nowadays we have hospitals, but it is still a good idea to not show or expose your new born to other people or at least to a few at best, for 40-60 days. There probably is more to it, but that's the fundamental reason behind it. Also this is a perspective to use as a comparison for other traditions and ask, find, or learn on your own what's the deeper meaning and practical side. Hope this helps. :)

Transport is not an financial issue in Sofia, especially if you buy an annual travel card. The rest of the salary will be enough to live decent lifestyle. Plus I am pretty sure your salary will not stay forever 1400€, every year average Bulgarian salary statistically goes up between 7-10%. Yes, now this increase is eaten by the inflation, but inflation will slowly go down to normal rates, and your salary will continue to rise, maybe not every year pay rise, but definitely will go up with time.

@@ATasteofBulgaria Yes indeed, all about who you know and know your language. Not always a complete disaster if the property isn’t complete. The first permit is Act 14, then 15 & habitation certification Act 16. Not an impossibility to live in an Act 15 certified property and there won’t be any property tax to pay as it’s unofficial habitable. Really only practical if are building from ground up. But be aware of the knock on the door and a request to leave from an official. Probably not something I’d try if I lived in Sofia or Burgas and suchlike areas. 😉

If you do some research and are prepared to travel to the specific city, we have top level professionals in many medicine and surgery fields. We have the same in traditional healing, but those are a bit more difficult to find. Dentistry is really high level and is cheap. Many Bulgarians living in the USA come back specifically for doing their teeth. There are many things that are high level, but you need to research, because from the times of Communism a lot of traditions are still left along with the specialist and we were top in many fields. Clean and organic food from the local producer is something you can enjoy in small towns and even cities(where they go on the Sundays or Saturdays to sell their production, or have weekly stand on a local farmer market). A lot of things to find, like a burried treasure you dig left and right and you find gold and diamonds, but they hidden from some dirt(obscurity, old school look, etc.).

Roger Singh seems to have got it spot on - avoid expats and all their backstabbing. Stephen Yarrow on the other hand always seems to have an opinion without understanding what he is on about. Again he is spouting useless disinformation and confusing others with his "act 16" whilst not even understanding what it is. Most move to villages and dont buy new builds! This is the type of veteran expat who continuously gets it wrong but will never stop sprouting "advice".
